  • really nice.. !

  • that was beautiful

  • 8 people prefer spoon fed radio garbage to real music.

  • Nice song. Never realized the strings were higher off the fret board. Man! And I was always hitting the fretboard when I played the slide!

  • Hey Ivan, great sounding !

You don't happen to have an uncle Paul do you ?

  • Sweet!

  • The most beautiful sounding instrument in all the world and you play it equally beautiful. Just lovely.

  • dude this is fucking beautiful

  • 8people have a potato instead of a heart ...

  • I think this video just made up my mind, I'm getting a dobro when i get back from this deployment! lol learning to play guitar right now. would love to get some hints as to which kind of dobro to get when i do get one. thanks for the beautiful tunes!

  • I can only describe this as a magical experience

  • freaking nice.. you made me envious.. :)

  • Hey Ivan... I've been putting up some cool flying videos on YouTube. I use your music using YouTube's "Audioswap". I fly Dehavilland Beavers here in Seattle and also I perform Aerial Ash Scattering ceremonies in my Cessna 170 to places like Mt. Rainier. If you search "aerial ash scattering" in YouTube you'll see how cool your music is on my vids for these memorial flights. Thanks for the GREAT SOUND! You are the BEST!!!

  • That's Jerry Douglas standard pal - lovely playing.

  • Lots of kisses!

  • this is wat i am playing ufter the banjo m

  • dude, your action is way too low! ;)

  • GBDGBD?

  • that's the thing that marks a real guitar player a real guitar player has to be able to play different songs if a player plays as fast as hell but sounds like an insane swarm of bees and if a player plays great country great blues great rock it's clearly who is the better player, great song

  • the song is in D ,but I think the dobro is tuned in open G

  • You reach the top of your music orgasm at the 0:58-slide! <3

  • I only play the average guitar but this stuff is amazing!!

  • You sound good. Um......but this isn't blugrass music!! Oh well still nice

  • Tuning & Tabs PLEASE?!?!?!

I've Already Payed & Downloaded Your Song :)

  • I just learned to play the whole song on my standard guitar. I just took my cheap nylon acoustic guitar and I lifted up the strings. I also built my home-made slide bar. It's not difficult to play, but it's hard to see what notes he does. Someday I wish I could buy a dobro, but for now i'll stay with my home-made slide guitar.

In my country the dobro is not very popular, so It's very expensive.

Greetings from Brazil and thanks for playing this beutiful instrument =D

  • So good......

  • very nice amigo well rendered lovely tone ....thanks for making my day a bit brighter

  • Congratulations. Amazing!!!

What tuning do you use? Is Open G?

  • Neat! What tuning did you use here?

  • ohh very good ... very beautiful

  • great songs! great slide! congratulations

  • Love the song, except the ending... why not just hold the notes to a fade? Awesome otherwise.

  • wow this is so relaxing

  • i have a question.. can you play any dobro guitar on your lap?

  • @miertjie94: yes and no. To obtain a good tone, you have to put enough pressure on the slide bar and it's only possible if you have enough action (i.e. distance between the strings and the fretboard). Look at how the nut on his dobro is much bigger than on a usual guitar.

  • BEAUTIFUL!!! Thank you for a good morning feeling

  • Plzzz tab it , really nice song

  • What tuning are thins god thing ? egwgee

  • I LOVE mp3iffy it WORKS just google mp3iffy.

  • is it just a reg bottle neck slide your holding

  • Beautiful tune!

    Phil

  • ok what do they call the kind of sringed "slide" instrument thats like this but it has like legs and isnt a guitar body

  • @CGiordano464

That's a steel guitar or "pedal steel" you're thinking of.

  • @IvanRosenberg1 yes i fianlly found out. they are sure pricey though

  • if i want to learn something like this (i play mandolin" what would it cost me to get an ok dobro and is it hard to learn to play like this?

  • @CGiordano464 You can get a good dobro for about 300-350$. Learning to play can be trickier. If you're good at fingerpicking, it's easier.

  • @hEINRICh6669 thanx. its such a cool instrument. would be fun to play to and such a beautiful sound/!

  • we loved this song down here in Brazil south america ...

  • Tuning? very beautiful song

  • @CandBvids

Just standard G tuning (GBDGBD low to high). The tune is in the key of D and utilizes the open D, B, and G strings to suggest D, B minor, and G chords respectively while playing the melody on the higher strings.....

  • you're fantastic

  • awesome

  • loving this sound! not to country sounding, not to twangy, but somewhere in the middle! i just love it

  • Dear Ivan, I am a student DOBRO of Spain and want to know if any of the subjects he writes are written in score encrypted, this is Madrid's almost impossible to find because we are very few fans of this style. Is there any possibility to send me some paritura ?..... heart would appreciate it.

Thank you very much from Madrid.

    Juan Carlos.

  • @juankisensei

Hey Juan Carlos -- I'm not 100% sure what you're asking for, but there is a lot of written dobro music at my website. I can't add url's to this post, but search google and you'll find it.

  • Hi Ivan. My husband bought me a dobro for Christmas and I am eager to learn to play. Is your instructional video good for beginners? If you could tell me where to order the DVD I'd really appreciate it. Also, my husband wants to know what tuning you used for this song. Thanks for your time! Rachel

  • @ToebeGirl

Hi Rachel -- that tune is in the Key of D, but the Dobro is in standard G tuning. This song is from the closing credits of the video and isn't actually explained on the DVD. The DVD is good for beginners for sure -- it starts at the beginning. You can find it all over the interenet; just search for "Ivan Rosenberg DVD" and you'll find plenty of good online options. Thanks!

  • @ToebeGirl Hi, did you find something so far?

  • I want to see her face, that girl went over the hill

  • I seen God! thanx

  • Well done. Inspirational

  • Wow

  • Hello! Your an amazing dobro player and this song is beautiful. Please if you have a minute to answer, wich dobro are you using in this video? I'd like to know the woods of the dobro and the mark or manufacturer. I appreciate your time. Greatings from Argentina!

  • That's a solid maple Clinesmith resonator guitar. Glad you like it!

  • beautifulllyyyy!!!

  • speechless...to beautiful for words...i wnt this at my funeral..

  • bravo.+++

  • AWESOME

  • Beautiful

  • Wow!

  • I like to transcribe this song

  • I'm doing a research paper on the resophonic guitar and I need to know what the role of the instrument is and what does it add or give to the piece.

  • "Resonator guitars were originally designed to be louder than conventional acoustic guitars which were overwhelmed by horns and percussion instruments in dance orchestras. They became prized for their distinctive sound, however, and found life with several musical styles (most notably bluegrass and also blues) well after electric amplification solved the issue of inadequate guitar sound levels."

    -Wikipedia

  • Well it has a unique tone and texture, that's what it really adds. The role is to play music. It can be used to play melody or accompaniment.

  • you make it look easy..super

  • is there a way to get this sound from a standard accoustic guitar i know they both do near enough the same thing but i noiced the strings are higher up on dobro

  • Not really. The distinctive sound of the Dobro comes more from the resonator cone than the height of the strings. This is a "square neck" which is designed to have the instrument laid flat on the lap. There are rounder neck versions which can be played conventionally and are just generally called resonators as there are a few different makes: National, Dobro etc etc

  • This is a square-neck dobro. They make dobros with the slender, guitar-like necks. The slender ones don't have quite the same sound, but they are close and can be played like a standard guitar.

  • A Dobro has a resonator in it which gives it the majority of the sound. Also, a dobro along with a lap steel don't have any frets like guitar has but I know people who get resonators put into their acoustics : )

  • you can do a few tricks with sheets of tin foil under the strings...tough though

  • Played a dobro for the first time and came home, typed in dobro and WOW! Awesome stuff! Blessings!

  • This is beautiful!!

  • just hit the 20th playing.

its time for me to get back to my studies.

    thank you!

  • this really is beautiful.

i have just listened to it about 15 times.

inspired me to take up the instrument as of tomorow.

    thanks so much.

the last chords does confuse me though.

  • Very nice and beautiful Dobro. Thanks.

  • Beautifull Music

  • Well done Sir.

  • what tuning is this?

  • its called "Here this Morning"

  • go see Tim Beaulieu ;)

  • mr. rosenberg:

What exact tuning is this in?

  • just standard G tuning - from low to high: GBDGBD

    ivan : )

  • Jeeze, are Dobro strings supposed to be that far off the fretboard?

  • Yes.

  • sounds more like folk then blue grass

  • hello, mr.ivan,,we have the same name..ehehe..thats why i think i can ask for some help, ehehe,,i have a composition,im asking for your help so that i can rearrange my song with you,you can check out my video title(ivan love irene) here also in youtube, incase you are interested just post it again in this site.sir im very thankful if you give a response..salamat(thank you)

  • Absolutely beautiful, touches the soul

  • What kind of slide are you using? If I'm going to start funding this new venture, I better have the right equipment!~ thanks again for the music - I'll be buying all your albums as soon as possible!!

  • Sounds Beautiful...

  • It's very nice and have interesting name for me.

In polish "dobro" means goodness ;)

  • yes indeed! the Dobro was invented by the Dopyera brothers, who emigrated from Slovakia to the U.S. The "Do" in Dobro comes from Dopyera, and the "bro" comes from 'brothers." Additionally, 'dobro' means something to the effect of "good" or "goodness" in the Slavik languages. The company's slogan for many years was "Dobro means good in any language."

  • And in Portuguese it means Twice, but anyways, he plays beautifully. I wish I have this gift.

  • Origin of this word is in Slovak. Two Slovakian came from Czechoslovakia in 20´s to America and bilt up this instrument. It´s named by their surname - Dopler - It´s abreviation of that Company. Dopler Brothers = DoBro . It´s not polish - it´s Czech word. Dobro je dobro,

Já jsem z České republiky. If you know something more about that - In Slovakia there´s a museum of that instruments. Jerry Douglas goes there every year and dedicated them one of his dobro there.

  • Ok mate relax. I did'nt say they're from Poland. But in polish we have word "dobro" and it means "goodness", I'm sure ;) A ja jestem z Rzeczpospolitej Polski :P

  • ja wiem tezs.Ćeść. klud

  • Cześć jestem Damian ;)

    What does "klud" mean?

  • I had a polish when I was studyin´university in Ostrava, but for only a few month. By klud I mean klid, peace. Ja jestem Milosz.

  • Indeed - "dobro" means good or goodness in Slovak and in Polish languages. The Dobro motto for many years was "Dobro means good in any language." It was the Dopyera Brothers who emigrated from Slovakia to the US and invented the Dobro. Originally, the resonator chamber was intended merely to amplify the guitar. Later, squareneck models were created for use in "Hawaiian-style" slide playing.

  • Yes, in Slovakia there's a Dobrofest and a dobro museum. But it was the *Dopyera* Brothers : )

  • Aha, Dopyera - I didn´t know exact name.

And dobro means good and goodness also in Czech because Slovakian language is derivate from czech (made in 1918).

  • Gods I love the dobro

  • this is great

    bluegrass is an american

    leacy of greatness

  • Very nice! I have a starburst pattern Resonator Dobro. I want to learn this song.

  • It's a shame you can't set this on replay.

  • @dosequiss use chrome browser and use the auto replay plugin.. :D

  • wow thats burtiful!

  • Very nice. Thank you.

  • Hi all,

Just wanted to mention that the album this song is from, Ashes and Coals, can be downloaded at CD Baby for just $5.00 for the next little while. I hope you'll check it out!

  • Is he swedish?

  • Very nice, playstyle & sound alike!

May I ask how you mic that dobro ?

I have a non elec rig & am looking to put my sound out better. (Dobro seems to be tough to mic) :(

  • Hi there,

I don't remember what mics were used in this video, but I usually perform with a Shure Beta 57 and record with either Neumann km 184s or a Rode NTk + Rode NT1. I usually perform live with the mic about an inch above the front of the coverplate for a clear and strong signal through the mic...

  • Such a unique instrument and so well played. Thanks. Others to enjoy are Martin Gross and Greg Booth.

  • that was amazing. i play guitar and bass but dobro is really starting to interest me now

  • how hard is it to learn dobro..?

i play a regular guitar is it far off?

  • some say its the hardest stringed instrument to learn besides the harp. Its because the bar has to be in the EXACT spot its supposed to be when you pluck the string or else it will be off pitch and sound terrible. He makes it look so easy but its infact very difficult

  • is this an alternate tuning??

  • I think it's tuned to open E

  • Hi there,

This song is in standard open G tuning: GBDGBD (low to high). It makes a lot of use of the low G, B, and D strings to suggest chord changes....

    ivan

  • I am a new learner and that was amazing

  • some of the most beautiful dobro playin ive ever heard. absolutely amazing. im actually thinking about getting a dobro. thanks for sharing your amazing talent

  • Great tune and great playing. Inspired me to buy Ashes and Coals which has a lot of killer dobro on it!

  • After you watch this so many times, you realize that you are hooked indeed, and you still like it! Love it!

  • I liked this so much I bought the tune on Itunes, and also went out and bought a dobro, and also found your site with free tabs, but i would really love to see the tab for this tune, if you could be so kind , Ivan, please.

  • one of these days I'll do an instructional video on playing solo dobro arrangements. no tab yet, but I'll let you know if I write some up : )

    Ivan

  • that last chord was kind of wonky for my ears.

    but the rest of beautiful

  • thought it'd be faded out by then... glad you like the tune! Ivan

  • The last chord was the best part.

  • So smooth and mellow, this is my kind of music, what a nice touch, such a beautiful piece.

  • WOW!

  • Where can I find a tab on this? I am trying ti figure it on the guitar I have most of it down but i would like to get a tab to see how accurate I am.

  • this is truley amazing i love it.

    your my hero

  • Hauntingly beautiful! Greetings from a Dutch Bleugrass fan! I enjoy this video over and over.

  • me encanto

me encanta el sonido del dobro

  • Does anybody know were there is a video of Ivan Rosenberg - 100 years?

  • my grandfather made the casings for Dobro, he left us with Matilda, a dobro that looks almost exactly like the one he's playing. Ever since I was little I've been dying to learn how to play.

RIP George "Ribby" Means and Jan Means

  • That was just amazing... I don't even know what to say. Absolutely beautiful.

  • I love this song and can you send me a message of this song name.

  • This is called "Here this Morning" and it's on my album "Ashes and Coals," which has 10 similarly mellow dobro and weissenborn instrumentals. Glad you like it! ivan

  • This sounds good. What's the name of the song?

  • Harder than it looks - like Clapton, he makes it look effortless. Notice he is "stopping" some strings with his pinky on the fretboard. Not impossible or even all that much (easy for me to say) but realize that this is an accomplished musician. It takes dedication and time to do this.

  • excellent show, gotta love all those bluegrass instruments!

  • Maybe this sounds REALLy stupid : Can i play this on a normal western guitar ? i prob wont get the same sound but is it possible ?... I really wanna know the difference about dobros and western guitar... By the way... It sounds absolutely beatiful.. really calm and nice song ;D!

  • So what's a "normal western guitar", like a Martin?

A Dobro has a metal resonator under the bridge. Go to a guitar shop and play one. Take money because you may not be able to stop yourself from buying one.

You can play dobro songs in the same tunings, with a slide on a regular guitar. Try it! It's fun and only slightly illegal.

  • Yea something like a martin :P .. But isnt the nut and bridge like a cm taller or something? .. thats how it looks like on this vid

  • u can play slide guitar on a normal guitar sure. these dobros r just like a guitar thats been modified for slide specifically. a resonator guitar is like a half and half guitar/dobro. the higher action u were referring to does make slide easier but it isnt impossible on a normal guitar. get a cylindrical object with a smooth surface- a glass bottle neck or a store bought slide which is metal, tune your guitar to an open tuning and awaay u go

  • Inspiring stuff - just gonna go and re-tune my Dobro to GBDGBD - I love the mellow sound

  • what a wonderful piece of music. also, great playing by this dude.

  • Many of you probably already know, but for those who don't, this song is called Here This Morning off Ivan Rosenberg's Ashes and Coals album. I recently purchased the album off i Tunes and it's for sure one of my favorite albums in my collection. Nice work.

  • Very nice tone, very beautiful music.

  • Nice playing! Are those tabs also on your homepage?

  • Serious pro picking. Nice treat to end a bleary-eyed night session on YouTube.

  • Sounds like a piece in an Allison Krauss song.

  • How do you figure that???

  • Sweet work, thanks for posting, you just brightened my day.I gotta drive 700miles tomorrow to do a job i cant stand, tryin to work out how to get this tune in the car.

  • What's the tuning?

    PLEASE!

  • Traditional Dobro tuning: GBDGBD. He's playing a lot on the high B and leaving the other strings open quite a bit. Real nice tone.

  • Wow the action is high! All dobros' action is high? Or is it just his dobro in the vid?

  • That's the way a square neck resonator is built. They are never meant to be played other that lap style. The frets are only reference points in order to get the right intonation. Round neck resonators can be played either way and for lap style play with these, you use a special nut that raises the action. For regular play they can be fretted or used with a bottle type slide (don't use a lot of pressure on the strings though)

  • That's one of my originals--"Here this Morning" from the album Ashes and Coals. Glad to hear such positive responses!

    Ivan

  • is it on itunes, if so i'm getting the whole album

  • thanks! it is on iTunes, along with a few of my other albums...

  • could I just look up your name on itunes?

  • This is just so beautiful. The anointing of the Lord is on you so strong for this gift. God bless you. I've sat here and listened at least 20 times already!

  • Yeah has nothing to do with the fact that he practices daily. It was totally god putting magic into his fingers....

Regardless you make beautiful music Mr. Rosenberg.

  • hi! Do you know who owns the rights of this song?

    thanks!
