  • where is part 2?

  • Donny was EXTREMELY underrated but his work speaks for itself

  • It is so sad to know one of my favorite musicians and singers suffered the way he did!! One of the best voices n history

  • Donnie was truly a musical genius. He contributed so much to music.

  • Donny delivered so much in his short lifetime, but what he gave will live forever. The fact that he was IN CONTROL of his work , was one of the most serious threats to amerikkk. I could care less who gets on the screen and says they think he committed suicide, those who know aint talking , and those who are talking don't know.

  • did he not jump off a roof in manhattan right after him and roberta finished dinner anyone?

  • I read once that he was alleged to have fallen from a window. There is an open verdict on his death as to whether it was suicide or he was pushed. Apparantly he had been studying suicide techniques for years. Also is wife had stated he was diagnosed a paranoid schizophrenic. So in short who knows.

  • IMO he commited suicide.

  • i pray that hollywood doesn't do a movie about donny's life. his music is his legacy especially his concept albums and live performances.

  • They may not, but his life has that element of being on top of the world, then the medical/family problem(s) and then the untimely death. If that happens, I hope they get someone who knows what his history and legacy means. Then again, maybe it is better to let his music speak for itself and let him rest in peace.

  • i believe hathaway's legacy is in his music. he will never be lost as long as we can listen really listen to his music. he was not "unsung" by any means perhaps unheeded but definitely not unsung. all we have to do is listen to what he left us. especially whole albums like extensions of a man and donny hathaway live and everything is everything. still as meaningful today as when he recorded them .

  • True that. Definitely unheeded and there are alot of folks that fit in that category. I've only heard a few of his songs, but he sang like an angel. There will never be another Donny Hathaway.

  • Why don't they have donny's videos instead of other people singing his music , why because he the singer is from the seventy, he is the greatest singer of his time, that what people say about this artist !

  • Depends. A lot of these older stars stuff is tied up with the record companies and if they don't/won't release permission to have these posted, like on YouTube, they are just locked away in a vault. Don Cornelius finally sold the rights to Soul Train and they should be putting things on DVDs. If they can't get a release, we won't see it.

  • WHEN DID THIS AIR?...i dont remember this...

  • I was so elated to finially see something done on the greatest singer, musican of all times life!!!!!!I feel so blessed to have his music with us!!

  • He was indeed the Best Male vocalist of all time...and his daughter Laylah Hathaway is amazing in her own right.

  • disappointing. hatthaway's artistic legacy deserves better than this.

  • Considering that there was NO info on him, this was pretty decent. Most people only know about him through his duets with Roberta Flack and "This Christmas".

His widow had to approve this before they showed it and she didn't see anything wrong with, but I feel you.

  • lepoetress, i am not someone who only knows hathaway through his flack duets. i am a collector of black music and a black cultural historian. hathaway is a black jewel. his MUSIC is an essential part of black and american history. when we fail to pay SERIOUS tribute to artists like hathaway we lose credibility as a people not only in the u.s. but around the world. not only on earth but in heaven.

  • I feel you. I think the problem was in the show itself; EVERYONE said nearly the same thing - they can't believe what happened to him/accept that he's gone. I think a lot has been lost due to NO ONE keeping the REAL records. Lots of his is/has been lost. We have so many sites that are giving out false info, people have no idea what to believe. There are those who are lucky like us, branchwater7, who heard the master in his prime.

  • Don't be too hard on "Unsung". Just from what I saw, it seems like they (family and friends) are still trying to come to grips with his death and by his widow saying they hid his illness means it overshadowed a lot of his life. I think there is a lot they didn't/couldn't bring themselves to tell. I bet you, somebody is coming forward with more or a movie may be in order.

  • i hope you're right. i think you're more insightful and compassionate than i have been about where his family is coming from. so i watched more of the program & thought as a whole the program wasn't so bad just too much focus on hathaway as a tragic figure instead of his complex black genius. it is weird tho' given our rich artistic history that we have now come to this place where we must depend on corporate media like tv one to tell our story and celebrate our cultural heroes. peace.

  • They focus on the tragedy because they can't understand how a man with all that talent just fell by the wayside. Unfortunately, if VH1/TVOne don't do it, very few will pick up the mantel and do justice to our musical history. Like I said, it is obvious after 30 yrs., his family and friends are STILL hurting behind his death. Until "Unsung" did something, all you heard was "Great singer", "Another great tune from Flack and Hathaway" & "His untimely death .." I feel your passion & love for Donny.

  • Interesting viewpoint. I agree. We don't really excercise our minds to find out about history whether musical or otherwise. I must say that this program is good. You get a chance to hear from people that knew the various artists.

  • Not a great documentary, unfortunately. Far too much focus on his death and darkest moments from the very beginning. Completely unnecessary - there were years and years of great music to celebrate, and more time should have been dedicated to his musical contribution. Reeks of sensationalism.

  • I guess they were limited by time. I took the focus to mean that his mental illness was so much a part of his life it tended to oveshadow his artistry at times. Especially when he stopped recording. I know it put a strain on his relationship with Flack. I am just glad we have the body of work we do have. The world is richer with him having heen here even for the short time.

  • I agree with you that Hathaway's illness must have played an important part, especially following his diagnosis, and this is reflected in the interviews with Donny's wife and other colleagues.

However, what I do disagree with is the fact that it hasn't been very tastefully done - the show opens with his tragedy, the music is dramatic and sounds like something straight out of a U.S. cop drama, and the narrative is far too emotive and dramatised, almost like from a trashy woman's mag.

  • Yeah I'm sure the interviews were much longer and they edited what they wanted. I did enjoy learning about his early success. I guess because for someone so talented and so well loved, it is still devastating even years later the way he died. I agree that they could have focused more on the music.... it's called unsung so they need to highlight the great genius of his work and show why she SHOULDNT be unsung. Thats what the show is about I thought. Otherwise they should call it troubles of stars

  • I don't think they sensationlized it. They only told what was out there and tried to dispel the myths. Donny died when I was about 8 or 9 yrs. old. Maybe they shouldn't have went to his death 1st, but given that most people like me, remember his tragic death, maybe they wanted to get that out of the way and then tell his story. Considering there was NO type of venue like this in the 70s, they just finally decided to give him some kind of due.
