@Reishyn Highly doubtful. Fae are creatures of the Earth and being in a man-made environment is most likely what would have frightened her more than any symbolism (a cross was in Irish Pagan symbolism too, by the way). It was stated by someone else that evidence of this is in that she was unable to touch worked iron. Please leave religious arrogance at the door.
……. This ditty … always … ALWAYS … makes me break down & cry, as Aisling, one of the Fae, not being corporeal like little boys & kitty cats are, MUST entrust the aid of the white cat … pangur bann in Gaelic … in order to help the young St Brendan be freed from his prison cell … Peace ~ (•8-o
I never saw that movie but now, after getting a shiver over and over again when I hear this song ....I just have to. Tomorrow is school. Whatever. This has to be.
Aishling's fear seems to be more of the nature that she is afraid of being in an enclosed, man-made space, and thus cannot enter a dwelling. It's also very likely she cannot touch worked iron, hence why she resists touching the bars and cannot touch the key herself. She cannot go, so she uses a creature of the earth, Pangurban, to help, with her natural magic and guidance directing the cat.
@darthroden It's actually what is quite brilliant about this scene. Aisling cannot go into the building because it is a church, which she, as a member of the fair folk, cannot physically enter. It's an old legend that the reason we ring church bells was that the bells were made of iron (which hurts fairies) and the sound of them drove them away
@darthroden Actually it shows in this very scene that Aishling is afraid of the Christian symbolism in the monastery. At 0:15 she flinches at the sight of the church and a crucifix. It's the little details like that that really make the movie that much more impressive. I think the only reason she helped Brendan is because they bonded so much in the forest together.
@darthroden i remember something similar in another movie. A wizard travelling to an isle filled with nuns thinking they are magic weilders. they end up making peace on earth.
When Christianity was introduced to a lot of places it got mixed with the religion and culture that inhabited the culture originally. Hence many of the pagan traditions we have during Christmas and Easter as well as a number of many far-reaching effects. A prime example of that sort of fusion is Beowulf, so similarly the creation of the Book of Kells could have been said to have been aided by the ancient ways preceding Christianity in the are
@darthroden yes, exactly! It seems to me that more than the book itself, the secret of Kells is that without Aishling, the book would not have been saved or completed.
@Goatmon Little details like that go such a long way in great animation. Most of the time is witnessed subconsciously but it really adds that extra level to achieve such a deep emotion. Great that you pointed it out! =D

I just watched this movie on Netflix... it is probably THE best freaking movie I have seen in YEARS. Seriously! It's so freaking brilliant, and this is my favorite scene! <3
This movie was excellent. The whole movie felt like brendan's imagination/ view of the world around him. Quite enchanting like "TheLivykitty" said before me.
@AnalieSkywind those shapes are everywhere in the film, the falling snowflakes in the viking scene are Norse runes, and when you see her face in the trees, it's a lot like the pagan 'green man'
I love Pangur! I have a cat, named Pangur who is a white long haired mix, with one blue and one green eye, but the sides are switched and my Pangur isnt a Pangur Ban. :) butbi've had the cat for 9 years...

Screw the four people and JohnWestMinor who disliked the clip and the film. It was one of the greatest animated films I've ever seen. And this clip, with Aisling, and Christen Mooney's voice is the best thing of it.
I don't understand how this girl isn't a singer (the only thing she did is this film).

@1997lkm unforunately i think that the ending was essential to the story telling. It made it much more of a real type of legend rather than say a disney movie.

It could be that she wouldn't be able to pass through an area bounded by iron even without touching it directly, or is just too scared of the stuff. I also thought that maybe the "ghost" spell is one that can be cast on others, but not on yourself, or it only works on "mortal" creatures (note the lyrics) and not pseudo-immortal beings like fairies.
But your explanation works too: the Fair Folk have all kinds of funny rules.
@Truzyxx Ohh excellent point. Well I guess since the movie leaves quite a few things unexplained, it could be either way. Bottom line is it has to do with fairy weaknesses. :)
More likely she couldn't go in because she feared waking the Abbot up herself, and it was easier for Pangar Pan to do it in that form.....or it could be no reasons other than the screenplay writer wanting to add a specific scene rather than anything to do with holy ground or pagan creatures.
One of the most beautiful animated movies ever made. I would love to see more films like this. The whole movie is poetry in motion, a tapestry of rich artwork.
i watched this movie with my family last night...i'd almost forgotten how powerful tis movie is, especially in the viking attack scene. those people hiding in the church, hearing the door being brought down, seeing the vikings standing in the door, knowing you wont survive...truly frightening, made me realize just how dark those times were
Saw the book when I went to Ireland. You can't touch it because it's behind glass. At least it was when I went in '01. Beautiful country. Beautiful movie. Beautiful song!
@afqdrama It's still behind glass. I visit Ireland once a year and I always make sure to visit Trinity College and see the Book of Kells (which is where I first saw this movie, on sale in the shop).
@FlyingLavaDragon I feel the same way. I've heard snippets of it and -knew- I had to watch the film someday. This song gave me the shivers & brought a lump to my throat. To me, that's a sign that it's got true magic in it. :)
1:27 - Does anyone notice the shadow being cast behind Pangurban? Because I did. And it looks a bit creepy.

Am I the only person who reconised the significance of the cat being called Pangur Bán when they first saw this film?

Saw the book when I went to Ireland. You can't touch it because it's behind glass. At least it was when I went in '01. Beautiful country. Beautiful movie. Beautiful song!

@afqdrama It's still behind glass. I visit Ireland once a year and I always make sure to visit Trinity College and see the Book of Kells (which is where I first saw this movie, on sale in the shop).

I'm in Ireland now and I REALLY want to visit Kells.

@FlyingLavaDragon me too! This is so lovely and haunting it gives me chills!

@FlyingLavaDragon I feel the same way. I've heard snippets of it and -knew- I had to watch the film someday. This song gave me the shivers & brought a lump to my throat. To me, that's a sign that it's got true magic in it. :)
