  • 1:27 - Does anyone notice the shadow being cast behind Pangurban? Because I did. And it looks a bit creepy.

  • lovely voice

  • I just find it funny that Brendan witnesses so much Pagan magic over Christian miracles but remains Catholic. XD lol

  • @DraoiSorcha

tá sé an shcéal go Éirinn, is é!?

  • @oipolloi1 scéal*

Tá, tá sé. MBocht in Éirinn Tá fhulaing an oiread sin cheana féin. Bhí an scéal suimiúil, mar sin féin.

  • This movie weirded me out.

    It was cool thoughXD

  • i still can't make up if Pangur Ban's shadow when he goes down the stairs if it's a metaphore or a graphic mistake.

  • @existtraiesc It's supposed to represent that it's still Pangur Ban, but just that he's gone into spirit form.

  • lyrics (translation):

you must go where i cannot

    pangur bán, pangur bán

nil sa saol seo ach ceo (there is nothing in this life/world but mist)

is ni bheimid beo (and we will only be alive)

ach seal beag gearr (for a short time)

  • favorite song out of the whole song

  • DEAR VIEWERS,

FOR ASTONISHING FACTS, JUST TYPE ON THE SEARCHING BOX:

    The Scecret of Kaaba

    YOU MUST BE STONISHED! ENJOY

  • Amazing movie. This is pretty much the only musical piece of the movie though.

  • fav scene of the movie

  • I can't wait to see the whole movie! it looks amazing!

  • @Reishyn Highly doubtful. Fae are creatures of the Earth and being in a man-made environment is most likely what would have frightened her more than any symbolism (a cross was in Irish Pagan symbolism too, by the way). It was stated by someone else that evidence of this is in that she was unable to touch worked iron. Please leave religious arrogance at the door.

  • Aisling in Ireland is pronounced ASHLING.... Lovely song, and lovely voice...

  • the cat looks like a rabbit.

  • ……. This ditty … always … ALWAYS … makes me break down & cry, as Aisling, one of the Fae, not being corporeal like little boys & kitty cats are, MUST entrust the aid of the white cat … pangur bann in Gaelic … in order to help the young St Brendan be freed from his prison cell … Peace ~ (•8-o

  • Fascinating...!

  • I never saw that movie but now, after getting a shiver over and over again when I hear this song ....I just have to. Tomorrow is school. Whatever. This has to be.

  • If you say her name in the correct Gaelic (I have a different spelling of the same name) it's pronounced ISH-leen

  • Aishling's fear seems to be more of the nature that she is afraid of being in an enclosed, man-made space, and thus cannot enter a dwelling. It's also very likely she cannot touch worked iron, hence why she resists touching the bars and cannot touch the key herself. She cannot go, so she uses a creature of the earth, Pangurban, to help, with her natural magic and guidance directing the cat.

  • the song is magic

  • holly sugar. That was magical.

  • you must go where i can not

    pangur woman, pangur woman

all our life is a mist

and we have a short time

  • i love how fluent her hair is. its so amazing. and the song is such a beautiful melody :)

  • I and Pangur Bán, my cat

    'Tis a like task we are at;

    Hunting mice is his delight

Hunting words I sit all night. .....

  • I love the irony of the movie...a Pagan forest spirit helps a young monk write a Bible.

  • @darthroden It's actually what is quite brilliant about this scene. Aisling cannot go into the building because it is a church, which she, as a member of the fair folk, cannot physically enter. It's an old legend that the reason we ring church bells was that the bells were made of iron (which hurts fairies) and the sound of them drove them away

  • @wildste Ah ok thanks for clearing that up. It also explains why she could not bend the bars and get Brendon out herself.

  • @wildste

  • @darthroden Actually it shows in this very scene that Aishling is afraid of the Christian symbolism in the monastery. At 0:15 she flinches at the sight of the church and a crucifix. It's the little details like that that really make the movie that much more impressive. I think the only reason she helped Brendan is because they bonded so much in the forest together.

  • @darthroden i love the irony of that comment too, since pagan faries arent allowed to touch iron

  • @darthroden i remember something similar in another movie. A wizard travelling to an isle filled with nuns thinking they are magic weilders. they end up making peace on earth.

  • @runawaybones No, the Book of Kells is an illuminated copy of the four Christian Gospels, written in Latin.

  • @darthroden

When Christianity was introduced to a lot of places it got mixed with the religion and culture that inhabited the culture originally. Hence many of the pagan traditions we have during Christmas and Easter as well as a number of many far-reaching effects. A prime example of that sort of fusion is Beowulf, so similarly the creation of the Book of Kells could have been said to have been aided by the ancient ways preceding Christianity in the are

  • @darthroden yes, exactly! It seems to me that more than the book itself, the secret of Kells is that without Aishling, the book would not have been saved or completed.

  • What language is she singing in? It's such a beautiful song!

  • @misc248 Gealic, I think.

  • @Ankh117

I thought so, but I wasn't sure. Thanks!

  • @misc248 Irish

  • j’adore ça -3

  • Pangur Ban was like, "what the heck just happened?"

  • This scene is a great example of both beautiful music, and extraordinary hand-drawn animation.

One detail in particular; at 1:27, note that the cat appears to be floating down the stairs, but its shadow is walking.

  • @Goatmon Little details like that go such a long way in great animation. Most of the time is witnessed subconsciously but it really adds that extra level to achieve such a deep emotion. Great that you pointed it out! =D

  • @WhiteCrownlessQueen No No, this is Pangur Ban. Did you listen to the lyrics?

  • @heartsforcats No No, this song on iTunes is called aisling's song.

  • @WhiteCrownlessQueen No No, this is Panger Ban.

  • "Aisling's song" actually. not Pangur Ban

  • 5 people thought the dislike button said dis i like

  • My friend said that she magically started singing this in English:

Me: How the heck did you do that?

Kitteh: Hm, what? Oh. I. HAVE. NO. IDEA. O.O'

    Us: O.O"

  • This is a very good movie. I like this song a lot.

  • ...i...i'm...speechless.

  • ……. What?! … I'm ONLY the 850th 'Like'? … That makes no sense … Thank you for posting this gem of a ditty, GKIDStv … oh, & Happy Lughnasadh, which it is today, the 1st of August … Tada gan iarracht! ~ (•8-D

  • why you five people why

  • I spent an hour memorizing the lyrics and what they mean. Worth it.

  • This film is absolutely breathtaking. One of ny favorite films of all time. This scene is particular takes my breath away. Makes me want to learn irish gealic now. ;)

  • i love the movie!! this is my fav part!!

  • the song is so amazing, one of the most beautiful songs i've ever hared

  • the animation is just so.....so beautiful!

  • I feel like more could have been done with the storyline but it's still a mystifying movie.

  • Cats like. WOAH MAN WOAH!!

  • this movie is soo sad and the song is just amazing

  • Hurrah for hand animation!

  • This scene, the battle with Crom, and the first time Brendan entered the forest and met Aisling were truly magical. Some of the most imaginative work in any movie I've seen.

The rest of the movie was barely above average, but those three scenes made it all worth it.

  • i liked the first part but it got kind of boring after eeverything

  • Translation: You must go where I can not, Pangur Ban Pangur Ban. Now turn into a freakin' ghost. (Or something like that, lol)

Pretty scene, but it must have been disorienting for the cat. XD

  • @Elendieldunadan I dunno, he seemed to be digging it. :p

  • @Elendieldunadan definitely one of the best replies I've seen to anything on Youtube! Thanks...

  • I love this the weird part is his name is Brandon so every time I heard his name I am looking around to see who needs me XD

  • That cat is so gorgeous!!

  • Flying-- I totally started sobbing the first time I watched this.

    it is just so beautiful.

    Very lunar.

  • I love this movie! this song is BEAST!

  • You Must be where I CAN NOT,

Pangur Bán my cat Pangur Bán my cat

There is in this world but fog,

    It will not be alive,

    but a short time.

Pangur Bán my cat Pangur Bán my cat

There is in this world but fog,

    It will not be alive,

    but a short time

    - It has been years since I was taken by such artistic magic. Well done to the team of this animation.

  • @idinitiativedesign im not sure if those are The REAL lyrics but im sure they might be.

  • I just watched this movie on Netflix... it is probably THE best freaking movie I have seen in YEARS. Seriously! It's so freaking brilliant, and this is my favorite scene! <3

  • @volcanolover really my netflix doesnt have this movie on ....oh maybe state's netflix contents are different than canada's

  • @4mymubi They are! I hope this comes in soon!

  • @4mymubi You know, if you have Fios On Demand, they have it on there in the HD movies section.

  • My cat is the spitting image of Panger Ban except Panger Bans a boy and my cats Girl

  • I've never even heard of this movie!! It looks so cool >.<

  • This movie was excellent. The whole movie felt like brendan's imagination/ view of the world around him. Quite enchanting like "TheLivykitty" said before me.

  • I love this song and I am listening to it as I speak. The movie is very enchanting and beautiful. Thanks I've been looking for this everywhere!! :D

  • This scene is just magical.

  • i was at the celtic media festival just over a week back and one of the guys behind it was there giving us a lecture.. i must find this film o_o

  • Pangur reminds me of my aunt's little white cat, Lily. :) This film was absolutely stunning, incredible drawings! Loved it!

  • this song gives me goosebumps every time i hear it

  • what language is this?

  • @SerpentKunoichi26 Irish Gaelic

  • I just noticed that the spot where the trees opens up where they are both running in the woods is in the shape of a five pointed star.

  • @AnalieSkywind those shapes are everywhere in the film, the falling snowflakes in the viking scene are Norse runes, and when you see her face in the trees, it's a lot like the pagan 'green man'

  • @Littledarkling13 I never noticd. Well, I noticed the green man part, but now I think I need to go back and rewatch.

  • The style Aisling is drawn in reminds of Kim Possible.

  • @Paradoxica27 The style Kim Possible is drawn reminds Aisling

  • You must go where I cannot,

    Pangur Bán, Pangur Bán

There is nothing in this life/world but mist,

And we will only be alive

    For a short time.

(the translation is not mine; thanks to Redwolf for these english lyrics!)

  • I don't know who voiced aisling. But she has the voice of a angel

  • A movie with a great touch to the heart. unaffected by the American movie style that seems to ruin the movie.

  • i will not lie. i'm a man and i cry every time i hear that song.

  • @babr47 I cried a little at the end when we get to see what beautiful illustrations are inside of the Book of Kells

  • @babr47 It makes me tear up as well. It is just so beautiful.

  • @babr47 because you are a big man

  • @babr47 You a real man. >;)

  • is this Irish?

  • so beautiful

  • so beautiful

  • I love Pangur! I have a cat, named Pangur who is a white long haired mix, with one blue and one green eye, but the sides are switched and my Pangur isnt a Pangur Ban. :) butbi've had the cat for 9 years...

love this movie. amazing graphics even if the plotline was kinda lacking.

  • This scene and song are so beautiful that I could watch it over and over again.

  • Screw the four people and JohnWestMinor who disliked the clip and the film. It was one of the greatest animated films I've ever seen. And this clip, with Aisling, and Christen Mooney's voice is the best thing of it.

I don't understand how this girl isn't a singer (the only thing she did is this film).

If tpeople without talent like Rebecca Black, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez make a shitty video and have a cd, then why talented singers like this girl can't?

  • i luv that cat :)))

  • Loved the movie, best i had seen in a while

  • wow

  • a stunning and very artistically magical take on Celtic beauty, makes me proud to be Irish :)

  • Hmm, loved this song so much I tabbed out the notes for guitar... :)

  • @AmazingAnimeGirl Sweep is an amazing series. I can definitely see the parallels with the Secret of Kells. :)

  • I loved the first half of the movie, but I didn't like the end at all

  • @1997lkm How come? What put you off about it? Do you mean the bit after Brendon and the old guy run off, or the entire second half?

  • @MegaNerdgirl Aiden*

  • @Oamanu Yes, Aiden, thank you. I'm terrible with names. XD

  • @MegaNerdgirl Haha, no problem. Figured I would help you out there. Four days later.

  • @1997lkm I'm disagree with you.

  • @1997lkm unforunately i think that the ending was essential to the story telling. It made it much more of a real type of legend rather than say a disney movie.

  • @1997lkm wanna know y, Because ashlyn didnt apear agian, she did only as a wolf

  • I love how this movie was so celtic and sorts wiccan at the same time, it just so happens im reading a series of books called 'Sweep' and it wad to do with the 'dark wave' killing all witches in its paths and has to do with the abbey also....so overalll the movie is great for all.....blessed be..... )O(

  • @toppless09 Go watch Twilight

  • this was such a fantastic movie!!

  • hey what program did you use to animate this? it's so beautiful!

  • @Hiccupby: this is from the motion picture "Secret of Kells"

  • @Hiccupby This is the movie "The Secret of Kells", it is hand-drawn animation. NOT computer made.

  • I thought he was saying Ashley the whole time! :)

  • @HannahTheScribe Because according to legend, fairies cannot enter religious buildings themselves. That would also explain why she was so afraid to be even near it at the beginning of this clip :)

  • @wizardwarrior713

Oh, is it because the building is religious? I assumed it was the iron bars and locks she couldn't deal with. Learn something new all the time!

  • @Truzyxx Hm it could be that, too, I guess, but if she could turn herself into a ghost, she wouldn't have to touch the iron, right?

  • @wizardwarrior713

It could be that she wouldn't be able to pass through an area bounded by iron even without touching it directly, or is just too scared of the stuff. I also thought that maybe the "ghost" spell is one that can be cast on others, but not on yourself, or it only works on "mortal" creatures (note the lyrics) and not pseudo-immortal beings like fairies.

But your explanation works too: the Fair Folk have all kinds of funny rules.

  • @Truzyxx Ohh excellent point. Well I guess since the movie leaves quite a few things unexplained, it could be either way. Bottom line is it has to do with fairy weaknesses. :)

  • @Truzyxx

More likely she couldn't go in because she feared waking the Abbot up herself, and it was easier for Pangar Pan to do it in that form.....or it could be no reasons other than the screenplay writer wanting to add a specific scene rather than anything to do with holy ground or pagan creatures.

  • i love this song it gives me chills everytime i listen to it :3 <3

  • It's just so epic. Love it!

  • One of the most beautiful animated movies ever made. I would love to see more films like this. The whole movie is poetry in motion, a tapestry of rich artwork.

  • i watched this movie with my family last night...i'd almost forgotten how powerful tis movie is, especially in the viking attack scene. those people hiding in the church, hearing the door being brought down, seeing the vikings standing in the door, knowing you wont survive...truly frightening, made me realize just how dark those times were

  • i love this song it's nothing like my self, but still love it and the movie!

  • This is an amazing song I love it!!!

  • I knew I must of spelled it wrong. Isn't it Aisling?

  • Awesome movie, should have had more Ashley though (Am I spelling her name right?)

    gotta love that cat :)

  • Am I the only person who reconised the significance of the cat being called Pangur Bán when they first saw this film?

  • @wildste Not at all. That's a lovely poem, I learned it in college.

  • Saw the book when I went to Ireland. You can't touch it because it's behind glass. At least it was when I went in '01. Beautiful country. Beautiful movie. Beautiful song!

  • @afqdrama It's still behind glass. I visit Ireland once a year and I always make sure to visit Trinity College and see the Book of Kells (which is where I first saw this movie, on sale in the shop).

  • I'm in Ireland now and I REALLY want to visit Kells.

  • @ybehc Haha I noticed that too and agree LOL

  • Goose bumps every 34 times.

  • i watch this move while iw rite iv watched it about 17 times so far i love it

  • Well that was only the most beautiful piece of animation i have ever seen.

  • I swear I practically almost cried upon hearing this song, and seeing this sequence for the first time. It's just so beautiful.

  • @FlyingLavaDragon

I DID cry listening to this again after the movie!

  • @FlyingLavaDragon i admit i almost did too

  • @FlyingLavaDragon me too! This is so lovely and haunting it gives me chills!

  • @FlyingLavaDragon I feel the same way. I've heard snippets of it and -knew- I had to watch the film someday. This song gave me the shivers & brought a lump to my throat. To me, that's a sign that it's got true magic in it. :)

  • ha ha the name of the cat is Pangur Ban, that's Gallic for "my cat", that's kinda cute.
