all I know is that I watched all the generations from Rick Hunter to Scot Bernard everyday after school along with Star Blazers, Gatchaman, Voltron and even fucking Tranzor Z. Do all of you realize that the people who made this series popular in the 80's were young kids like myself (I was 10 at the time) who knew nothing of Japanese anime? We thought it was made right in the good ol' USA. As another person commented, this show, for good or bad, was a gateway for many of us growing up at that time to discover Japanese anime.

How I love Robotech - I got the whole 3 series for £15 odd second hand, such a bargain.. This is so much like new Battlestar Galactica (though only within the Solar System mostly) - Humanity fighting against an implacable enemy. Thier shared humanity comes out in the end though (um.. kind of like the new Galactica series!). The first time I saw the aliens I was like "no f*cking way!" XD

Not to mention that there was no way to know that the way it was liscened would cause such a huge snarl of rights, and that the anime industry would boom so much (and that DVD would come around, making releases with multiple language tracks possible). @TylerNessss I didn't realise it was so different - this is the only version I've known.. I have the extended edition which features dubs still but alot of footage that was taken out when it was aired in the States. Will look out for the original though, I know what you mean - I prefer Hokuto No Ken and its old music as opposed to the English dub with techno soundtrack (still ok though!).

you do know that back in 85, japanese culture was not a huge thing, and in fact, there was quite a bit of anti japanese sentiment due to the fact that at that time, japan was having an economic boom, and in some places in the US, jobs were being lost to Japan, so japanese culture wasnt exactly the most popular thing at the time, so editing out the cultural referances (which back then, people would have little way of even researching), was the only way to make it marketable.
