The Big 4 was not so much about who was the best out of all the Thrash bands -- it was about who were the most influential in the Thrash movement. You can't deny that Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax were the biggest force in the 80's. However, if there was to be a Big 5 -- no doubt Exodus would be in it.

I feel that Thrash was, and still is an ATTITUDE. Dave has it, Gary Holt has it, Jeff and Kerry have it. Back in the day, James Hetfield had it, Scott Ian had it, Lars had it, but the difference between bands like Metallica and Anthrax, on the contrary to Slayer, Megadeth and Exodus, is that Megadeth and Slayer's attitude with thrash was GENUINE. Whereas Metallica's attitude was easily manipulated by money. Anthrax too, I don't even know what they were thinking in the mid 90's, but they sucked.
Yeah though, I've heard them say that about Metallica in separate interviews, as well as when they did Metallica covers. However, when Peace Sells was released, it influenced Dime and the rest of the band to head in the Power Metal/Cowboys from Hell direction that they took, soon after PSBWB was released. They all say that was "The Album" that changed their vision. Yes dude, I know they were the leaders of that movement, what I'm saying is I don't think Metallica and Anthrax really deserved it.
Oooohhhh I love this album! I had the original album cover too (the one picture here). The cover was later changed for a more boring cover after protest from some group....probably the PMRC, who were chasing metal bands at that time over Satanic lyrics.

I believe there were a lot of bands that were way better than Metallica. Metallica influenced a lot of thrash bands, but Mustaine paved the way for what Metallica would later achieve. If there were room for a 5th, and Sepultura would have stayed thrash, I'd throw them in there too. Sepultura was excellent with the thrash genre.

I understand that the current Big 4 were the first 4 bands to "COME UP" in the genre, but I don't believe that should determine who the Big 4 is. I'm quite confident that there WERE other people that took British Heavy Metal, and took it to the next level, before they heard ANY of the Big 4...

I hate that Metallica had original goals:To write the heaviest music, to never sell-out, and to be NOTHING like the surrounding L.A. glam scene. They completely went against all those goals 20 years years ago, and are JUST NOW, starting to get their "Fire" back. That and they totally ripped off a Dave's style, and acted like they created it. As for Anthrax, they are totally basic, boring, and cheesy sounding.

Opinions are opinions and whether you hate them or not isn't my point...Megadeth is up there with Metallica in the big four...Anthrax may not be your favorite, but they were a BIG part of that movement...Metallica were the leaders by far in that movement, and still follow their hearts and stay true to themselves, which is what they've always been about

Hell, so did Exodus! But Megadeth's first four albums are still some of the best Thrash ever made, and Anthrax's Thrash days are still cool.
Besides. Look at Exodus now, they're a glorified Groove Metal band with a Phil Anselmo wannabe on vocals. Paul would be rolling in his grave.

I feel that Thrash was, and still is an ATTITUDE. Dave has it, Gary Holt has it, Jeff and Kerry have it. Back in the day, James Hetfield had it, Scott Ian had it, Lars had it, but the difference between bands like Metallica and Anthrax, on the contrary to Slayer, Megadeth and Exodus, is that Megadeth and Slayer's attitude with thrash was GENUINE. Whereas Metallica's attitude was easily manipulated by money. Anthrax too, I don't even know what they were thinking in the mid 90's, but they sucked.

Yeah though, I've heard them say that about Metallica in separate interviews, as well as when they did Metallica covers. However, when Peace Sells was released, it influenced Dime and the rest of the band to head in the Power Metal/Cowboys from Hell direction that they took, soon after PSBWB was released. They all say that was "The Album" that changed their vision. Yes dude, I know they were the leaders of that movement, what I'm saying is I don't think Metallica and Anthrax really deserved it.

Oooohhhh I love this album! I had the original album cover too (the one picture here). The cover was later changed for a more boring cover after protest from some group....probably the PMRC, who were chasing metal bands at that time over Satanic lyrics.

I don't think Anthrax belongs in the four either, they're the cheesiest sounding thrash band ever. If the Big Four were a group strictly based on original Thrash Metal, and who doe's it the best. NOT FAME AND MONEY!!! I'd have to say 1)MEGADETH 2)SLAYER 3) EXODUS 4)OVERKILL. Exodus should at least be in place of Anthrax with the current big four though...

@capnkdawg Why do you say that bud? Explain. To hold up my argument though, I will say that Thrash was one of the rawest, most relentless forms of music. I believe there were a lot of bands that were way better than Metallica. Metallica influenced a lot of thrash bands, but Mustaine paved the way for what Metallica would later achieve. If there were room for a 5th, and Sepultura would have stayed thrash, I'd throw them in there too. Sepultura was excellent with the thrash genre.

@capnkdawg So basically, if anyone or any band is heavily influenced by Metallica, then they are either consciously, or unconsciously influenced by Dave Mustaine. Whether they like Dave or not. I understand that the current Big 4 were the first 4 bands to "COME UP" in the genre, but I don't believe that should determine who the Big 4 is. I'm quite confident that there WERE other people that took British Heavy Metal, and took it to the next level, before they heard ANY of the Big 4...

Metallica sucks, and Anthrax sucks, and that doesn't necessarily mean they in fact "suck", but I can definitely tell you why I believe that to be true. Besides, all GOOD musicians were influenced by Megadeth way more than Metallica. One for example, DIMEBAG. Metallica is just more easily accessible.

@capnkdawg If you want to know WHY I don't think they deserved it, this is why. I hate that Metallica had original goals:To write the heaviest music, to never sell-out, and to be NOTHING like the surrounding L.A. glam scene. They completely went against all those goals 20 years years ago, and are JUST NOW, starting to get their "Fire" back. That and they totally ripped off a Dave's style, and acted like they created it. As for Anthrax, they are totally basic, boring, and cheesy sounding.

By no means were they doing straight Glam style vocals, but it was pretty close, as far as the objective was concerned. Which was to have catchy hooky singing that mostly girls like, on top of heavy music. I fucking hate that, Bullet for my valentine does the same shit, and you can tell what the intention is. Let's be metal, but have girly singing so we can get laid and make lots of money

Opinions are opinions and whether you hate them or not isn't my point...Megadeth is up there with Metallica in the big four...Anthrax may not be your favorite, but they were a BIG part of that movement...Metallica were the leaders by far in that movement, and still follow their hearts and stay true to themselves, which is what they've always been about

What I will say is that I just think Exodus OVER THE YEARS has been more influential to the genre, than Anthrax has. I respect that Anthrax had a lot of fans, but that's definitely something that can't change my mind about how I feel about Anthrax's actual music. @EagleKhorn yeah, in the 90's megadeth went slow and anthrax became a cheap imitation of pantera... but they aren't my fav bands for those songs, it's their older sound (specially in the 80's) I love their sound, to me there's no band who sounds like anthrax or megadeth!

@EagleKhorn Yeah, Megadeth went bad in the '90s, so did the rest of the Big 4, and a couple of other prominent bands, like Pantera (fuck Pantera-style Groove Metal, poser-bait trash), and Iron Maiden. Hell, so did Exodus! But Megadeth's first four albums are still some of the best Thrash ever made, and Anthrax's Thrash days are still cool.
Besides. Look at Exodus now, they're a glorified Groove Metal band with a Phil Anselmo wannabe on vocals. Paul would be rolling in his grave.
