i'm using Xubuntu and let me tell yeah its amazing even if u have a good powerful pc this is the best desktop for linux XFCE 4.8... now spatry how u do that 3d cube because i have it but it only has 2 workspace and i chang it in the xfce settings to 4 and i still get 2 and i think u have to config it with compiz but i see no opition i got this working before, now may u refresh my memory dude and the flames how u get that back me.. please HELP ME!
They may have spent a lot of time making this but only about 5 mins making the installer as it screwed up my XP so that I could no longer boot into it. I nuked it and moved to Mint 10 which installed well and didn't screw my xp.
@LinuxSpatry LOL i'm still using Linux Mint 10. I see no reason to upgrade it or changed it, because it's totaly bugless and tweaked by me over the years.
@LinuxSpatry Thank you sir. Im switching over to linux and being able to chat long distances with my son on skype or the like is a big selling point for me.
@doubleomc The capability to video chat shouldn't be affected by Desktop Environment. However, to answer your question, yes skype should run fine on Xubuntu because I've tried before and it worked for me.
I was using Xubuntu, it was kinda bland, so I went back to Ubuntu. I found Gnome 3 was okay, but that was nothing until I found Unity on a free DVD in a Linux magazine.
There was nothing wrong with Gnome, why change it? Tasks take longer to do than before.
Great review, Spatry. I'm seriously looking at xubuntu when the next LTS comes out. The one thing I noticed is that it does differ from Ubuntu in some ways. For instance, I didn't see the "Preferences" list. It must be there somewhere? Even if it's not, the items listed under Preferences (on regular Ubuntu os) must be located in some other place.
@jordanlang2 I did a google search and the results I found reveal a tedious process to do what you are asking... If it were me, I would backup my files on a flash drive and do a fresh install of xubuntu. I always keep an archive of needed applications (deb files) just in case...
@chicaboo76 SUDO Whois Eric Roberts :::: Bash... GOOGLE IT! Oh wait! I recognise him... I feel like I am looking in a mirror and seeing myself 20 years from now! Sheesh! LOL
Ubuntu's Unity lens kept poping up behind my application windows. I finally had enough and added xubuntu to my login options last week. haven't logged in on ubuntu all week. Gwibber is a little buggy with notifications but I'm sure I can fix it.
I find Xfce to be the only usable DE on a desktop now. Very customizable and lightweight. I personally find it feature-rich and visually appealing. You can enable basic compositing in XFWM, or install compiz for more advanced effects.
i love gnome 3 and gnome-shell! :D but this is still a good vid for those wanting the old school classic environment out of the box or a lightweight environment and want to check out how it looks. Also it would be nice if you opened the default file manager, default text editor and default browser when reviewing stuff so we can see how they look. :) danke!

@ipodpunker 1. open CCSM 2. go to General options 3. open desktop size tab 4. set horizontal virtual size to 4 (or however many desktops you want)

@poojkhgf thats my complaint about linux also.
polished, but some of the real important stuff is to hard for the common user to work out.
also the common user wouldnt be to impressed with the lack of software either.
A lot of Linux distro's can be a right pain in the butt to install, set up internet etc...
very frustrating.
I keep trying tho, coz it has some good points..
just wish the basics were sorted out first.

Also, it lags my older machine -HP8800 laptop.
Looks like I'm going back to Xubuntu. :)
Good Video btw.
