@ScottieDM Thanks Scottie! And congratulations on your NaNo successes. 29K words is nothing to sneeze at when those words move your story in the direction you want it to go--and it sounds like yours did.
NaNo is over for another year, and again I did not "win". My problem is two-fold. First, I write slower than a turtle on tranquilizers (I have a pesky habit of thinking before I write). Second, if I see my MS is headed off into the weeds, I edit, rather than spend three pages driving about off-road before I finally get back on the path.
Still, I pad. Not on purpose, but my mind is overly detailed. My padding can be pretty and even fun, but it never moves the story forward.
@ScottieDM Have you tried outlining your project before NaNo begins? A strong outline can go a long way towards alleviating the problems you describe.
I know there's a lot of talk on the NaNo web site about "just writing" and worrying about finding the diamond in the rough of all of that writing once November is over, but this is just one approach. The key is to find the method which works best for you.
Very true. The fantastic thing about NaNo is it gets you to write. Too many say, "I'm a novelist," but they never write anything. The not so fantastic thing is NaNo values word count above all else.
However, I feel I won because my long and complex novel had an incomplete time-line Nov 1st and I made huge strides toward completing that (to the detriment of actual word count). 29,242 words, despite time off to fiddle with the time-line.
Good luck. I'm right there at the 38,000 mark and trying to put in 3,000 today. I like your illustration, but I'll catch up with you after the competition to find out more about the video stuff!

Congratulations on winning a scholarship to Holly's course! #3 out of a field of 13 is pretty darn good. You deserved it.
PS: I snuck in another vote for your vid yesterday, but it looks as if you didn't need it. ;-)

Thanks Jennifer.
I got a bit behind earlier this month, but put on a big surge yesterday. I should be caught up to pace by the end of today.
The zone is sweet.
