I just spent a week in Kolkata, got back 3 days ago. I live in Thailand. Kolkata has a lot of nice places to visit, Victoria Memorial is a nice place to take photos, and check out Park Street, its the posh area with hotels and restaurants. Basically is where the white people hang out. I spent a week in Darjeeling and Sikkim as well. This was my first time to India, and i had a blast!

In Spanish and French (as well as the other Romance languages), the noun typically precedes the adjective. Ergo, "Victoria Memorial" in English would be translated as "memorial de Victoria" in French, or "monumento de Victoria" in Spanish.
Hence the "memorial Victoria". Note that Hendaye is from France.

1. I never mentioned Goa churches. Taj Mahal I did, but who said that it wasn't built by Indians? Mughals frequently married Hindus. Furthermore, the Taj has some typical Hindu features too (fact, not RSS propaganda), the octagon pedestal, the inverted lotus atop the dome, and the "kalash" at the top are Hindu. Besides, there is a thing called Indo-Islamic architecture.

2. The Qutb Minar alone is not a UNESCO world heritage site, which also includes the Jain temple ruins and the iron pillar built by Ashoka within the same complex. Besides, the Delhi Sultanate may have Turkic origins, but it certainly adopted India as the homeland.
3. Bengalis certainly do not deserve credit for the Sunderbans. It just happened to be there. For the same reason, I never mentioned Kaziranga either!

@UglyBanglaJingoScum. Of all those Indian "states" you have mentioned only Bengal has had a renaissance (and that takes alot of artistic integrity). I'm not even Indian and I know this! The first asian Nobel prize winner was Tagore (who happens to be a Bengali), the Indian national anthem is written by the same person. Women are venerated in Bengal (Durga/Kali) yet buried in other parts of India. Money may run out, yet art will always remain the heritage of the Bengalis. Worthless? I think not.

We've discussed this issue of Bengali Nobels and the national anthem over and over. As I've always said, Bengal became what it is solely because of the British. It was nothing before the British came, and it is inching back towards insignificance. One other thing - Bengalis are the single largest ethnic group.

As far as art is concerned, the flowery Sanskrit poetry of Kalidasa, the erotic sculpture of Ajanta, Ellora, and Mahabalipuram, the amazing palaces of Rajasthan, the philosophy of Adi Shankara and Ramanuja, Bengal has nothing worth mentioning. Until the British came, Bengal was an insignificant part of South Asian civilization. It simply reaped the rewards of becoming the first to surrender to the British in 1757.
Nobels come if you have the set-up. Cambridge alone has 80!

Women were certainly emancipated in Bengal because of British influence. Yet, outside of the North East, where Sati was practised due to the repeated exposure to Muslim incursions (where women were raped/captured and forced into sex-slavery), it was Bengal alone where the evil practice of Sati held sway. Sati is still undoubtedly have taken place in far flung villages in states such as Rajasthan, but it is very sparse. There is a justification for the evil custom taking root in North West India which was frequently pillaged by Islamic invaders who gang-raped the women.

Sorry to break your heart, but I am not a fan of Vivekananda. It's not because of linguistic/sub-ethnic reasons, just that I don't think much of his philosophy. Did get impressed somewhat by Jiddu Krishnamoorthy though, even if his teachings are not quite my cup of tea either. However, his ideas match up with those of a few non-mainstream quantum physicists (Bohm), which stimulated my interest.

I just spent a week in Kolkata, got back 3 days ago. I live in Thailand. Kolkata has a lot of nice places to visit, Victoria Memorial is a nice place to take photos, and check out Park Street, its the posh area with hotels and restaurants. Basically is where the white people hang out. I spent a week in Darjeeling and Sikkim as well. This was my first time to India, and i had a blast!

in spite of being a bengali...i do agree their weird habit...but not all are same my dear frnd...there are many bengalis...who say..."I am indian"..and not "I'm Bangali"....who do not hate other communities...i've seen them...but unfortunately...you havent ...its just that..you've encountered the "rotten apples"......i wish someday you'll find a nice bengali ... take care...jai hind

my freind the discussions had heated up long ago..and it is over and
that close minded , abusive bengali jerk failed miserably in proving his point after he was caught lying and belittling other communities in India
rather than saying Indians hate each other... u should say Bengalis hate the other communities. thats more appropriate.

but i still appreciate what u said about boasting being an iterative process. But I also believe you musnt do it by belittling other communities+ u musnt think of your own state before the countries and that is the whole problem with BONGS. they will say banglar mati ke salam..not ma India tumhe salam. my bengali freinds will never acknowledge India's cultural heritage as a whole but they will introduce only bengali culture to the westerns which sucks (Bose was a gem in the mud tho)
