it's not necessarily the artists who oppose putting parts of their songs in Youtube videos, it's those greedy circle-jerking recording companies that own their music and who don't necessarily give the artists their cut of the proceeds.

When you think about it, Abridging a series is, essentially, a type of fanfiction in and of itself. It's just a humorous, non-written fanfiction.

Now this sounds like a commentary at its finest. I mean it is nice to hear HOW you did you do it but what really spices up the commentary is the author telling HOW IT WAS TO create the material, the situation at that moment etc. everything else that 'you' printed all over it. For example The Making of - rubbish that is out there just to promote a crappy movie. Myself, I think those talking scenes were boring but short (and stupid) jokes like "wots ow munny" were extremely refreshing.

Interesting fact: I am probably the epitome of "that one fan", but I've never been to a con once. ^^

Thing that always bothered me about copyright was that it really doesn't give control to the artist, more to the suits who bought the rights. I'm pretty sure Matt and Trey wouldn't be so anal about 30 sec's of audio, but Viacom is another matter. So I'd definitely be more pro-copyright if there was some guarantee the creator got what was his/hers.

I agree entirely. The original idea of copyright-- that it gives the creators of artistic works a temporary monopoly on their own work so that they have a chance to make some money on it, thus giving people an incentive to create artistic works, after which their work would return to its rightful place in the public domain-- is entirely valid.

Since then, though, copyright law has been stretched and bent far beyond its original intent.
