dak1116 actually your right rBST is not naturally occuring. However BST is naturally produced in the pituitary glands of a cow. All milk contains BST because cows naturally produce it. rBST is a thirteen year biological technology that underwent the most testing of any biological technology in history. And has been deemed safe by the USDA.
The short answer is, None. It's already in your milk and has been shown to have no effect on humans when injected. Since it's a protein hormone, it doesn't survive digestion. The Bovine SomatoTropin is too dissimilar to Human SomatoTropin for it to bind to the relevant receptors.
MORE on rbst...A EU scientific commission stated that the use of BST substantially increased health problems w. cows, including foot problems, mastitis and injection site reactions, and impinged on the welfare of the animals. The report concluded that BST was a danger to cows. Canada prohibited the sale of BST in 1999. The US is the only industrialilzed nation to allow rbst. Monsanto makes the drug & makes huge profits off sales to factory farms at the expense of the small operator.
Dairy producers of all sizes use rbST. That said, good managers (and they can be any size) will see the best results from the technology. rbST is one of the most extensively studied products in the history of the US Food & Drug Administration and the agency found no human safety concern associated with the product. There was found to be a slight, but not concernable, decrease in cow health and producers take measures to compensate for that.
I stand corrected about rbST (I meant to write hormone) but your argumentis silly and illogical. Not all hormones are the same, and like drugs, are very powerful if not used according to proper dosage. Estrogen occurs naturally in men, but fellas would change considerably if given large doses of it. Do you deny that mastitas is a problem in cows? Why is rbST now illegal in most of the EU? Who do you work for (MONSANTO???)
bST is a protein hormone, similar to insulin. It has no activity when taken by mouth. bST is approved for use in 50 countries. As for mastitis, it has been determined that an increase in mastitis may result but that it is really insignificant to the increases that occurs from other things. Season of the year changes the incidence of mastitis nine times more than the influence of bST. Nope, I do NOT work for Monsanto.
Againk, I do not understand your logic. Any hormone or chemical substance for that matter (including water!) taken in too large a quantity, is harmful. And, if rbst is naturally occuring in cows, why not just let it NATURALLY OCCUR instead of using it to force cows to be unnaturally miled more than three times their NATURAL capacity? Oh, what kind of countries? The third world where US agribusiness holds some of them hostage for aid. China? This sounds like Bush's coalition of the willing.
You are correct..too much of a good thing can be harmful. As for why the dairy industry chooses to use the technology..it is because 10% more milk can be produced from our dairy cows and that means that less cows are needed to supply the same amount of milk...less cows, mean less environmental impact from grazing. The amount of hormone that cows are receiving is miniscule compared that which is found naturally in some green vegetables and soy milk for that matter.
The Canadian Journal of Veterinary Research reported a nearly 25% increase in the risk of clinical mastitis in cows treated with rBST due to increased milk production (a conclusion echoed by other researchers, as well as a 40% reduction in fertility and 55% increased risk of developing clinical signs of lameness. Mastitis can be treated with antibiotics, which can impact the sale of milk, so it often goes untreated much to the pain and discomfort of dairy cows.
As in any production system, good management is of the utmost importance. There are many reasons for increases in mastitis in a herd as I previously stated and the situation has been investigated by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration on several occassions out of concern for the animals. Producers don't want sick cows as their profit suffer. Mastitis is treated with the use of antibiotics but no milk containing antibiotics is allows to reach the supermarket dairy case.
This guy is a whore for Monsanto. There is overproduction of milk in the world--growth producing hormones are not necessary and are banned in the UC. Rbst is NOT a naturally-occuring hornone and it makes cows VERY sick. Many develop mastitus which produces great amounts of puss that feeds bacteria that gets in YOUR milk. Supporting Rbst is simply supporting huge profist Monsanto makes off this antibiotic.
rbST is not an antibiotic. It is a growth promoting hormone that is synethically produced but occurs naturally in cows. The product is one of the most extensively studied in history and indeed been shown safe for humans and cows. Did you know there are more hormones in soy milk than in milk for cows treated with rbST?
