I bumped into Logan Marshall-Green who plays Trey in L.A once. I asked him about filming this scene and he said it was really hard to get the effect right. In the end after 42 miserable takes he recommended to the director that they just use a real gun as it was the only way it was going to look convincing. Obviously there were highly trained paramedics on scene, and as soon as the director shouted cut they patched him up and commended him on a cracking piece of cinematography.
