I wish I could travel back in time and buy a turbo duo...they are so hard to find and very expensive today....I would trade 5 sega dreamcasts for 1....
Back in the day, I used to play Valis III on the Genesis. It's a shame as of what happened after the four main games. I believe the rights to the series is now owned by Sunsoft.
"Although it's (voice acting) not as bad as Last Alert, and to be honest, it's kinda a shame." haha..Well said.
The Valis series is awesome, though this entry is most definitely the weakest, at least on TG/PCE. Every game has awkward controls, to one degree or another, but there is just something about it. For me, Valis I is the most polished of the series, though III and IV are quite fun - again, despite the awkward controls.
I'm currently trying to make the grand finale with IV.
Oh yeah... Valis II... This is my 1st CD game back then so like your own Last Alert this has a special place in my heart.
You reviewed the game with great justice, Better than I would have for obvious reasons. My mind gives it an average 3 also but my heart gives it a nostalgic 4 1/2 ;P
@bitpym Agreed i had a hard time figureing that out.I was like wtf telenet let valis be made into a hentai game.Still, since sunsoft has the rights to telenet library of games maybe that will change one day.
I like your coining of the "emptiness feeling." Honestly, I think it comes from the lack of animation. If she had more than 6 frames when running and more movement in general, she'd be more believable. Then, if the creatures would react when hit (again with more frames of animation and a bit of if/then logic) it would be more satisfying. Don't you just wish there was a magic button that would seperate the backgrounds from these old games and give us parallax!?
@Triumverent I would like to say that the game suffered from the 64k work ram limit the CD had but then I remember Valis III, which also has on the same "limitations" so humm.... Bad programming? I still love this game but I'm biased so don't mind me :P
While I don't think that all CD covers need to have the same anime-eqsue art, but sweet lord in Heaven why do all US conversions have those terrible pastel colored monstrosities.
I have yet to play a Valis game, I had Valis 3 for the Genesis but it had the "bit rot" when I got it home and could never get it to work. Thankfully I have only ever had three games get the rot (Yar's Revenge, Sim City, and Valis 3) out of a roughly a thousand games,so far so good. Still, I can't help but feel I missed out with Valis 3.
@maziku Thanks for the reminder, I've wondered since it's release if it were any good. I have yet to run into a copy of IV in the wild, it may be rare.
lol, you cheeky devil, we all have our guilty pleasure. '3'
oh well, it's interesting how this is one of those "rare" instances that you give a game a 3 out of 5. Other than that I only remember you doing that for Dead Moon and (almost) to Riot Zone.
This game may not be packed with wonderfully cheesy voice acting but the commentary on this video sure is. "There's always room for jello". Ahhh, I wouldn't have it any other way.
Cool review. I actually like the Valis series, but I never got to play this one, due to if being on turbografx-cd (I can't even find the cd attachment, let alone games for it). It does seem a bit average compared to the Genesis versions of Valis and Valis 3, but I'd probably enjoy it.
Well like you said for what it was back in the day I think I could have really sunk my teeth into the game had i owned it back then. :) Nothing wholey orginal or breath taking beyond maybe its cutscenes (minus the cheesy dialogue) but rather solid in its foundation. Good stuff spida1a. Keep the turboviews a commin.
From the makers of Final Zone 2... 'nough said!!! Telenet brings some cheesy memories, what can I say?!?! Some people thought Megaman 8 and Digital Pictures with their Sega CD games had some bad cut-scenes... and dare I say Final Fight for the Sega CD. Also, "Feel my Arctic Blast!!!".
Good review spida1a valis II was one of the games that sold me on the turbo-cd in the early 90's.I guess it impressed me then with those anime cut scenes and music'but looking at it now the game was average for how it played, great sound track though.Though at least valis III&IV did it better in terms of gameplay.Still watching you're review of valis II gives me a flashback to when i frist played it at a rental place for video games.
Can't say I felt an emptiness feeling playing this at the time back in the day maybe my wallet did as funds were quite limited. This is truly one of the classics of the early days of cd rom greatness. Yuko has definitely grown quite a fan base since the release of the various ports on different consoles this one being my 1st cd rom experience with the series will always hold a special place in my gaming memories. Great Review 5 Cd Roms for u my friend.
Another terrific review. I really appreciate the solid editing in your videos.
I found the "emptiness" you described particularly interesting, as I know exactly what you're talking about. The "feel" of a game makes a huge difference. The dudes at Action Button call it "crunch," when a game has a satisfying friction that you can feel as you play. I find that term a little silly, but it's still the best and most concise term I've yet seen for it.
Sweet! Great review as always and even in the 'average' games you bring the game to life on screen to the extent that I almost always say to myself I will eventually get hold of a copy. You may enjoy my latest vid, on PC Engine shooter Sapphire. Sorry about the shameless plug!
