  • He is Judas

  • Probably my favourite song off the Moods album. Huge fan of Neil Diamond since his concert, probably nearly 50 years ago. at Western Springs, Auckland, NZ. Must be

one of the best entertainers of all time.

  • ES MAGNIFICO ESTE VIDEO. LA CALIDEZ DE LA MIRADA DE NEIL LO HACE INSUPERABLE. ME EMOCIONO MUCHO YA QUE ME HIZO RECORDAR A MI VIEJO QUE YA NO ESTA Y A MI SEGUNDO PADRE QUE FUE MI SUEGRO, QUE TAMBIEN NOS DEJO HACE UN TIEMPO...

  • My Dad died at 20.06. 2011. i miss him every day . R.I.P Daddy . I love you

  • I don't think a song has ever been written with such depth and meaning. Thanks Neil & RIP Dad.

  • My former husband died last month. He would have been 75 next Tuesday, September 20. Together we raised 4 boys - and he died alone and I alone attended his military burial on Friday at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery. I have been a big fan of Neil Diamond and Morningside kept coming to my mind. When I finally played it - it broke my heart and cannot stop crying. Thank you, Neil, and James, that song was written for you. RIP

  • One of his most beautiful songs ever! Thank you for sharing :-))

  • read the Bible.....(John 5:28) Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice...

  • from one of my favorite albums of his, Moods, magnificent.

  • <3 this song has made me cry as long as I can remember.... maybe this song is why I've spent my life caring for the elderly whose children are too busy to care for them.... cuz those kids are raising their own kids.... and somehow society has lost sight of the priority of family for the sake of money and stuff....

  • I remember listening to this song the day after my grandfather died. I just sat down in front of the TV I was 15, and watched the video. I was in some kind of shock and sadness but it was good to know that I loved him

  • Never feel lonely with this song please.

  • @jpcoolidge I feel lonely and think that's the way I'll end up. Alone. It's a beautiful song though.

  • @codalisa007

If you feel lost and you are right where your at, then someone must be looking for you...... That someone is ..... don't let anyone convince you different, we are all born a child of God. Do as Jesus instructed, go to a private place and spend time with the one who has been looking for you. God Bless

  • @jpcoolidge I feel lonely and think that's the way I'll end up. Alone.

  • Just visit the nursing homes and you will see how many of our seniors are left to die alone. Yes! truth is sad.

I thank my lovely wife and her family for loving their parents unconditionally.

My father-n-law is now 90 yrs. old and still lives w/us and I value his stories and company. At least his will not die alone.

  • What a stunning song, we should be ashamed in how we treat older people.

  • Does any person reading this remember Burl Ives. He was the first to record this song. And in my opinion his was the best. Now this is coming from a real Neil Diamond fan. And also Neil's friend. Just fact. Now come dry your eyes. Sir Dr James C Ronning

  • @e61807 Hello Not sure if Burl Ives ever sang this song. It was written by Neil Diamond. Can't find it anywhere by Burl Ives. Neil Diamond does it Great. Love the man.

  • Tumshyheid...me too. The moment I first heard it I was had. This song is so Jewish and so well relates to the Torah and G-d. This song has such depth!

  • His music has meant so much to me over the yrs for different reasons and i thank him so much for that...Thankyou Neil.

  • We're all fucked !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • just great and moving.something everybody should think about once in a while!!!

  • This is my second comment on this song, listen to it when i feel or get a bit lost with the day to day strains of a working life. makes sense to me. FOR MY CHILDREN, always.

  • @paul1982pmc

As we go through life we must consider what legacy will we leave behind when we are no longer here, we are judged by what we do and if we can all remember to bring a little happiness in others lives then you will have fulfilled your legacy. Neil Diamond has long since fulfilled his. Beautiful song, beautiful man.

  • @jpcoolidge It looks like I'll end up that way.

  • So beautiful, but get your hankie ready!!

  • We have a cafe here in town that sells 50 cent coffee on Saturday. A group of about 10 old guys gather at the counter and drink coffee and reminisce about the "old" days. Most of these guys were "real" men who were loggers and heavy equipment operators in the woods and lived with danger everyday. If you listen, every old guy has a story.

  • i love when he looks up and smiles at the old man when they are playing chess.. gorgeous!!=)

  • I really love this song. It just scares me to think what I will be leaving behind for my kids.

  • My dad made things, had to back then. Nails, glue, (Croid), no fancy joints. I had a bookcase he had made. I felt that I had let him down when I had to leave it behind when emigrating.

  • This was my grandma's favorite song. It should have more views.

  • I'M JUST SO BLUE

  • Breathtakingly beautiful!!

  • SO SO BEAUTIFUL

  • Hauntingly beautiful, poignant and unforgettable. Thank you very much for posting.

Neil Diamond is a true musical genius. Anyone who thinks otherwise just has to listen to the numerous beautiful classics that have filled his albums over the past 40 years. His live version of this song on the 1972 "Hot August Night" album often brings me to tears, it is that beautiful and moving.

  • some artists are so WAY above everyone else, a cat stevens, neil diamond, the beatles, simon & garfunkel etc etc..

there is just a genius in some people, like there was in a mozart, beethoven...

unfortunately i don't see that quality today. well, one exception: celtic woman

  • Cool. Never knew there was a TV special.

  • my 7yr old daughter said to me the other day, why do i listen to such old music. i said to her, when i was your age my dad always to listened to this kind of music, and i never understood why, so i said to her when she gets older certain music will touch her heart in a way thats so hard to explain. but it will make you feel good inside. love this song. reminds me of how my father is such a good man,

  • @paul1982pmc This is precisely the attitude that sets people like you apart. I do the same thing with my children.

  • @paul1982pmc ....no comment!!!! true words!!!! best wishes from germany to ireland

  • @losoul hi many thanks for your comment. love the song. take care, from irelands belfast city to germany. ; )

  • @paul1982pmc Beautiful xxx

  • @paul1982pmc I couldn't said it better.

  • this song makes me cry, i remind my father who dies alone and i am on the same way, like the song "Without a child, without a tree, without a book" (-Sin hijo ni arbol ni libro- a song by Silvio Rodriguez, a cuban songwriter who writes with the soul).

  • like this song and that sometimes that I think of my gradfather who was a capenter. and that what he left behind. I always think about him and that he died to soon.

We all miss him very much and that we wish that he is here with us today. I know that when people die that it is very hard on the family and that we much go on and when we go to heaven we will see him. I love my grandfather and I will miss forever. good rest..

I like this song from Neil Diamond , the greatest singer of all times

  • This is one song i will go to while i'm on youtube. It really touches my heart, because thats how my grandfather went??????????

  • You have to really feel what this song is about. One day some of us will be in this situation

  • This song never fails to bring a tear to my eye! Neil Diamond has an awesome voice and a powerful gift for telling stories!

  • Immediate tearing...all because Neil Diamond knows how to put the words together. I love you Neil Diamond and what you stand for.

  • Holla!

  • listen to it makes me feel close to older people. just great and meaningful

  • Long time ago, but nothing forgotten! It`was a great pleasure to see you live in the Waldbühne in Berlin.

When I hear you songs: my first love comes be back, and that`s was a great love !!

  • ........One of my favourite's of Neil Diamond, especially as sung on Hot August Night. ......Neil Diamond is a master alright, a beautiful song.....

  • I used to take care of a little boy & I have a Neil Diamond album with this song on it,

& he would ask me to play it quite a bit & after we listened to it, he told me, "I would cry". This was from a little 4 year old. I love this song,it has so much meaning & emotion.

  • To me this is one song you don't know about. But has alot of meaning for older folks with no one.

  • Not a song people talk about, but they should. It has meaning and feelings deep, real deep.

  • Morningside it's all for years my favorit Very great song!!

  • A beautiful song! This is not a fantasy, people loves mony but she wont no tabel whare his life and childeren reproduction. These song its timeless! Tank You!

  • Sorry Neil - it is no fantasy it is my father

The gifts he gave he hid -

    And he was a carpenter

And I do things and I think he did not teach me this - but I saw him do it and I learnt.

    He gave me independence.

Not to be him ... but myself

  • Neil Diamond is a man filled with beauty, supreme talent, that absolutely unforgettable voice and masterful songwriting unique to him only.

We are fortunate to be of his generation.

  • Hi

    Neillove

    Bam Bam

  • Reminds me of my gramps...Such a sad story because he was a contractor and would also build furniture all of my cousins and my brothers would stay away from him and talk bad about Gramps and all he wanted what was best for his children and grandchildren..Gramps built his last house when he was 80 years old he built it himself and I wanted to buy the house but had to sell my home 1st then my husband passed away..Gramps said to me why this house it's not my best work..But it was his last work..

  • Wat een bloedmooi nummer van Neil Diamond. (What a bloody nice song, so sentsative sung by Neil!) Zo gevoelig gezongen.

Neil is really the best. This is for shure one of his greatest songs. I really get goosups from him, singing this meaningful swong.

Thanks so much for posting it!

Neil, when is your following concert, I really want to be there. Please let me know.

  • my grandfather gave me a watch which i lost thru not being careful enough! My grandfather did not die alone but he did to me given I had not seen him for so long. I loved him and SHOULD have looked after that watch like a treasure. I was young and didn't realise till I had lost it what that watch meant to me. I miss my grandfather but I also miss that watch for what it meant! Every time I hear this song tho it brings the watch and my grandfather back to me.

  • la mas linda de todas

  • Neil brings the realization that we all have open books in our Life. This song

brings to the forefront the meaning of Love and personal Conviction. The gift

and Loving Memory revolved around a Table that an Elderly man had built

for Family. It was his legacy yet it was in his loneliness he died, and his

only gift to remind them was a Table he built to commend his love for his Children.

  • This song reminds me of my father who died alone, except for his 2 dogs who were his kids. He lay near his kitchen table. This song was posted on here on the date of his funeral. The epitaph on his headstone is 'For My Children'. I remember my Dad playing this song to me as a child. His favourite song was Crunchy Granola Suite recorded live at the Hot August Night concert with orchestra. I love him and miss him so much. Neil is a link to him :).

  • I used to listen to his songs when I was a little boy. I remember he dropped some thoughts on one of his covers of LP (long play records at speed 33 ;-) stating that he wished if not all but some of his songs may be remembered and looked upon as masterpieces (comparable to Beethoven or Mozart). That would make him proud...

As far as I am concerned, I whistle his tunes every now and then as they are simply unforgettable. Parts of my youth.

Morningside is one of my all time favourites. Thx

  • my dad was a carpenter. it was only after he had died and his funeral was being planned that we found out that he had requested this song to be played...........

    totally heartbreaking, but absolutely beautiful

    RIP daddy, love always 29/04/04

  • My dad was a carpenter - enough said

  • My Dad died when i was 8 Years old. He died alone.every day of my life i miss him because I never had the chance to tell him how much i love him . Dad i miss you . Thank you Neil for this wonderfull Song.

  • Happy Birthday Dad 2-10-10. Love Your Children. Miss You

  • Morningside is a neighborhood in Brooklyn where Neil grew up...but when I first heard the song, without lyrics in front of me, I uinderstood the words as "Morning sighed." What a perfect image for a song about death. I stil think of it that way as well as realizing that the father's final gift to his insensitive family was his death. (The words he carved became his epitaph...")

  • Reminds me of Gramps the one man who had so much influence on so many people..He was a great man who built his last house at the age of 80...I told gramps i wanted to buy his house and he told me he wasn't his best work but to me it was....

  • so much emotions,when i listen to this song,so beautiful,thanks gr joca

  • so sad!

  • Haunting ..

  • magnificent song.

It make me feel more and more for all of those nameless old people who we sometimes just walk past in our rush for doing what we "think" we need to do.

I will try more in 2010 to help those who don't have anyone to talk to.

Stay safe all of you Youtubers, and many thanks usheleq for sharing this with us all.:)

  • @kluttza I can fell what you say, I hear this song and I know what you mean

  • Great song, thanks a lot!

The French version "Avant l'aube" by les Compagnons de la chanson gives the same emotion

  • A friend of mine told me that, because this song had the words "for my children" in it, he had sung it for his father on his birthday. As he was singing the song, he realized he'd made a mistake in choosing this song. Stalwart soul that he is, he had to continue on to the end.

Now, when I listen to this song, I can't stop laughing when I imagine the look on his dad's face as his son, the apple of his eye, sang his heart out about the futility of all his father's efforts in life. lol

  • this song is not about his father's futile life..but about the lack of love and consideration on his family's side...he labored long and hard to give them love and laughter and they had no regard for his emotions and feelings...

  • @naturalgirl211 I believe you may be right. Fathers try so hard to do right by their children, but often times are not appreciated until they are gone. Much like and artist who is recognized posthumously for his now considered masterpieces

  • I am a old divorced man who did everything for my daughter. I would play this to keep my spirits up. The sysbolism keeps me going. She is now 20 and told her mother to get screwed and has never contacted her. It's about the kids! Copy this fast before the lawyers get at it!

  • Just those few notes played by the guitar at the beginning of this song always gives me a lump in my throat :) beautiful song!

  • i lost an old watch of my grandfathers that was given to me when he passed away. i was just young and used to wear it to work - lost it and this song reminds of how stupid i was every time i hear it - my old swedish grandfather - August Eric Engstrom - he was a legend!

  • moving sentiments, beautifully orchestrated

  • From Neil's biography "Solitary Star":

... Morningside, a tale of a master carver's passing that Neil would say was written in tribute of his grandmother, "who died alone in a New York hospital with no one even caring." "Upon hearing that song," the arranger said, "I felt it was important enough that I wanted to write that little prologue to it so that the orchestra could quietly say, 'Now pay close attention because you're going to hear something.' Neil ... liked that idea a lot."

  • Comment removed

  • I have always loved this song...brings a tear to your eye and tugs on the heart strings.

Neil Diamond tells the story in a song so well. Everyone can identify with this story at some level.

He is a rare and unique talent.

  • Brilliant song with wonderful lyrics!!! 5stars

  • Neil Diamond is one of ... the very few people who can rest, knowing that they have, indeed, made life better for many others, My "hat" is off to you, SALUT, Neil.

  • I first heard this 36 years ago and I am now the old man. Fantasy makes way for reality. The sensitive melody and lyrics made me cry then with an impending insight in the future. I cry now for the fact that the words were a prophecy all too vividly played out in real life.

Neil gave me a reason to challenge life with Hot August Night and is still part of my everyday existence.

  • Yes when we were young getting old was not a reality we lived each day for what it was. All too soon you look back and it is 36 years later. I too remember playing Hot August Night to death on my tape player

  • There are so many meanings and interpretations you could take from this song.

On the surface it reminds me of my father who was a carpenter - but it hints at lost or unrealised gifts and talents, lack of appreciation of people until they are gone, missed opportunities . It is just so deep. Just a superb song and one that I have enjoyed for over 30 years

  • I cried when I heard this for the first time. Its really very sad song. But beautiful song.

  • YOu gotta love Neil. His songs shines like a Diamond.

    Thanks for the posting

    Rose R

Darüber sollte man einmal nachdenken . =(

  • A great but so sad song of one of the greatest singers and songwriters ever.

    Thanks so much for sharing.

    Yael

  • true you not gay....ryanball...just the usual anglosaxon...blue eyed....anally retenting...poofter....

  • This song breaks my heart, so beautiful... I've seen him 6 times live (I'm 27), EVERY TIME he delivers his heart and soul, quite literally makes love to his audience, as he describes.. Very few like him. And I'm not even gay!

  • I love this song! You can't go wrong with Neil Diamond!

  • I played chess with neil diamond in 1982.

    he cheated.

  • It is a sad fact of life that neil diamond no longer writes good songs. he used to however. lindsay evans hamilton nz

  • That doesn't matter to me because he sings the old stuff really good.

  • His recent albums would surprise you. Have you heard Hell Yeah? Search Youtube for his recent songs, you might be impressed.

  • I had the good fortune of seeing Neil perform in the 80's at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens. When he sang this song, thousands of people lit lighters. It was very impressive as the whole concert. Neil performed non-stop for 2 hours and 40 minutes and encouraged a lot of audience participation. My husband said we will never see another concert as great and he was right.

  • one of my favorite songs from ND.

    caresses my soul.

  • Wonderful piece of work, Neil. I have kept this song in my heart for 25 years.. Morningside has inspired me to produce a book that contains many of the poems that I wrote for my daughters as they grew. I call it For My hildren. The song's impact never diminishes or fails to bring tears gushing.

  • Hommage à mon grand père disparu il y 2 mois...Emouvant...

  • Beautiful song...Thank you Neil...

  • Just incredibleafter all these years

  • Yes...This is one realy magnifiek song.

It makes cry, but so, so good.

I will thank my grandfathers, father. Its one True.....

  • Yes, morningside , and old man died, my grandfather, my father, my father in law, I remember, very good song, true, very true...

  • I remember listening to this when my Grandfather died, a sweet man. The song helped me put it in perspective. LOL...

  • exactly..

  • IL EST BON, BEAU ET MAGNIFIQUE

  • Neil has this way with communicating with people, that I can only admire, and wish I had the capability. I don't know what I am afraid of, but alas HE is not afraid. I admire him for that. This video is beautiful, and should have won awards. This song is AMAZING!!! He is my hero. I want to be like him.

  • God this is a sad video :'( but still good

  • This is a great song and a great visual. This video is from Neil's video titled "I'm glad you're here with me tonight". It's out of print on VHS, not sure if it is even available on DVD. You can probably find it on ebay. The best version of it in my opinion is on his greatest hits '66-92' album.

  • Since I am 10 years old I am a fan. This was one of my favorites

  • You most definetly have a great taste in music. You are mature for someone so young.I Started listening to ND in 1964. I too was 10yrs old. He is to me the greatest American singer/songwriter of all. His body of work is so vast w/almost 100 hits and counting. keep on listening to this great man and maybe someday you can write great music too. All the best...

  • Thank you, that was back in 1973. I think he is indeed one of the greatest American singer/songwriters. When you hear songs as Brookyn roads, And the grass won't pay no mind, Lady Magdalene. They are all so beautiful. Now recently with Oh Mary, Hell Yeah, it gives me the shivers, Pretty amazing grace and Don't go there. And now I forget a lot of other songs. He makes such a lot of fine music that he will never be Forgotten. All the best to you all too.

  • Love the video, but his voice is so much more moving and powerful when he does the song on the HOT AUGUST NIGHT LP (CD) for you youngsters. Moves me to tears every time!

  • Fully agree with you. I don't think he will ever surpass the way he sung it on Hot August Night!

  • These lyrics are so moving! & Neil's voice is incredable - I love him!

  • Another incredible song from Neil Diamond. He's unequalled in his field of songwriting, particularly during the 60s,70s and early 80s.

  • I have heard this song over the years and still come up with the same conclusion, Neil writes beautiful songs of life in general and can relate to just about anyone. Listen to the words, we have, or will be there at some point in our own lives.

    Awesome job Neil.

    Jordan(bluedolphin19732002).

  • Morningside, the old man died. And no one cried. They simply turned away. When he died. He left a table made of nails and pride. And with his hands, he carved these words inside. For my children. And the legs were shaped with his hands. Ahh the top was made of oaken wood. And all of the children who gathered around this great table,
  • and touched it w/their laughter. Ahh, that was good. Morningside. An old man died. And no one cried. He surely died alone. Truth is sad. For matter a child would claim the gift he had. The words he carved became his epitaph. For my children. Home! Home! Home! Home!
  • It's a sad commentary to the human condition when families feel the old has lived out their usefulness. They get discarded to a nursing home, or worse-are left to fend for themselves. Neil Diamond gives us a glimpse, and questions us in regards to our elders. And whether or not we will be there for them, as they were their for us. Thank you ND for this fantasy that speaks truth.

Have we done enough for our grandparents? And will we be their for them when it is their time to go home?.

  • This is a great song and a great visual. This video is from Neil's video titled "I'm glad you're here with me tonight". It's out of print on VHS, not sure if it is even available on DVD. • ♥N♥E♥I♥L♥

  • i miss you so much daddy-from nina

  • Heartbreaking; it could happen to any of us, and Neil communicates this possibility so poignantly. I cried when I first heard it, as a young woman, and I still cry at 60 years old, with my husband, children and grandchildren. He is blessed with a gift, of writing wonderful melodies, lyrics, and then delivering them so movingly. I can still rock and roll with him, I can laugh, cry, or just be still and think my thoughts. Thank you for sharing this video-it's amazing.

  • Een groot man . super .

  • THE BEST

  • I've listened this song thousands of times in the last...thirty years of my life, and it moves me like the first time I heard it. I need to close my eyes and only feel my soul living. Thanks Neil.

  • My goodness. What a gorgeous man he was. Love me some Neil. I remember hearing that song as a child and picturing an old man alone with that old table. Thank you mom, for giving me the gift of Neil.

  • ...gorgeous manchild he is....precious soul from inside out....your welcome

  • As well, thanks to my Mom. Neil Diamond is wonderful.

  • what a beautiful ole song thank you for posting

  • This song is exceptionally beautiful! But the best version ever is on his live double CD Hits. That live version is amazing and tranquil. And since I can't find it performed, I settle for anything on this song.

  • There are no enough words, to describe the beauty of this artist, and of his music, which is written with his heart!

  • I discovered Neil Diamond when I was a child (´bout when I was 4/5 years old ) ; actually I´m 30 , and I love his music day after day .

    He´s the best

  • WOW!

    What an amazing video!

Thanks so much for sharing this beautiful song and video.

  • LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH.

  • I think I've only ever heard this one once before. If you like Neil songs, and you've got a spare moment. I'd appreciate it if you'd have a listen to some of my covers of his songs. I've had good feedback so far, and requests for more so I must be doing something right :)

I've never seen this vid before. Thanks :)
