My former husband died last month. He would have been 75 next Tuesday, September 20. Together we raised 4 boys - and he died alone and I alone attended his military burial on Friday at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery. I have been a big fan of Neil Diamond and Morningside kept coming to my mind. When I finally played it - it broke my heart and cannot stop crying. Thank you, Neil, and James, that song was written for you. RIP
<3 this song has made me cry as long as I can remember.... maybe this song is why I've spent my life caring for the elderly whose children are too busy to care for them.... cuz those kids are raising their own kids.... and somehow society has lost sight of the priority of family for the sake of money and stuff....
I remember listening to this song the day after my grandfather died. I just sat down in front of the TV I was 15, and watched the video. I was in some kind of shock and sadness but it was good to know that I loved him

We all miss him very much and that we wish that he is here with us today. I know that when people die that it is very hard on the family and that we much go on and when we go to heaven we will see him. I love my grandfather and I will miss forever. good rest..

I used to take care of a little boy & I have a Neil Diamond album with this song on it,
& he would ask me to play it quite a bit & after we listened to it, he told me, "I would cry". This was from a little 4 year old. I love this song,it has so much meaning & emotion.
A beautiful song! This is not a fantasy, people loves mony but she wont no tabel whare his life and childeren reproduction. These song its timeless! Tank You!
Reminds me of my gramps...Such a sad story because he was a contractor and would also build furniture all of my cousins and my brothers would stay away from him and talk bad about Gramps and all he wanted what was best for his children and grandchildren..Gramps built his last house when he was 80 years old he built it himself and I wanted to buy the house but had to sell my home 1st then my husband passed away..Gramps said to me why this house it's not my best work..But it was his last work..

my grandfather gave me a watch which i lost thru not being careful enough! My grandfather did not die alone but he did to me given I had not seen him for so long. I loved him and SHOULD have looked after that watch like a treasure. I was young and didn't realise till I had lost it what that watch meant to me. I miss my grandfather but I also miss that watch for what it meant! Every time I hear this song tho it brings the watch and my grandfather back to me.
This song reminds me of my father who died alone, except for his 2 dogs who were his kids. He lay near his kitchen table. This song was posted on here on the date of his funeral. The epitaph on his headstone is 'For My Children'. I remember my Dad playing this song to me as a child. His favourite song was Crunchy Granola Suite recorded live at the Hot August Night concert with orchestra. I love him and miss him so much. Neil is a link to him :).
I used to listen to his songs when I was a little boy. I remember he dropped some thoughts on one of his covers of LP (long play records at speed 33 ;-) stating that he wished if not all but some of his songs may be remembered and looked upon as masterpieces (comparable to Beethoven or Mozart). That would make him proud...
As far as I am concerned, I whistle his tunes every now and then as they are simply unforgettable. Parts of my youth.
my dad was a carpenter. it was only after he had died and his funeral was being planned that we found out that he had requested this song to be played...........
My Dad died when i was 8 Years old. He died alone.every day of my life i miss him because I never had the chance to tell him how much i love him . Dad i miss you . Thank you Neil for this wonderfull Song.
Morningside is a neighborhood in Brooklyn where Neil grew up...but when I first heard the song, without lyrics in front of me, I uinderstood the words as "Morning sighed." What a perfect image for a song about death. I stil think of it that way as well as realizing that the father's final gift to his insensitive family was his death. (The words he carved became his epitaph...")
Reminds me of Gramps the one man who had so much influence on so many people..He was a great man who built his last house at the age of 80...I told gramps i wanted to buy his house and he told me he wasn't his best work but to me it was....
It make me feel more and more for all of those nameless old people who we sometimes just walk past in our rush for doing what we "think" we need to do.
I will try more in 2010 to help those who don't have anyone to talk to.
Stay safe all of you Youtubers, and many thanks usheleq for sharing this with us all.:)
A friend of mine told me that, because this song had the words "for my children" in it, he had sung it for his father on his birthday. As he was singing the song, he realized he'd made a mistake in choosing this song. Stalwart soul that he is, he had to continue on to the end.
Now, when I listen to this song, I can't stop laughing when I imagine the look on his dad's face as his son, the apple of his eye, sang his heart out about the futility of all his father's efforts in life. lol
this song is not about his father's futile life..but about the lack of love and consideration on his family's side...he labored long and hard to give them love and laughter and they had no regard for his emotions and feelings...
@naturalgirl211 I believe you may be right. Fathers try so hard to do right by their children, but often times are not appreciated until they are gone. Much like and artist who is recognized posthumously for his now considered masterpieces
I WARNED YOU CHRISTIANS, DELIVERANCE IS COMING, SEAL YOUR SELF WITH HOLY SPIRIT!
Do not pollute yourself with pornography, violent entertainment, smoke, drugs, alcohol, evil words, etc. Remember this admonition of the Lord: Touch not the unclean thing; and I WILL RECEIVE YOU, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. 2 Cor.6:17,18
I am a old divorced man who did everything for my daughter. I would play this to keep my spirits up. The sysbolism keeps me going. She is now 20 and told her mother to get screwed and has never contacted her. It's about the kids! Copy this fast before the lawyers get at it!
i lost an old watch of my grandfathers that was given to me when he passed away. i was just young and used to wear it to work - lost it and this song reminds of how stupid i was every time i hear it - my old swedish grandfather - August Eric Engstrom - he was a legend!
... Morningside, a tale of a master carver's passing that Neil would say was written in tribute of his grandmother, "who died alone in a New York hospital with no one even caring." "Upon hearing that song," the arranger said, "I felt it was important enough that I wanted to write that little prologue to it so that the orchestra could quietly say, 'Now pay close attention because you're going to hear something.' Neil ... liked that idea a lot."
Neil Diamond is one of ... the very few people who can rest, knowing that they have, indeed, made life better for many others, My "hat" is off to you, SALUT, Neil.
I first heard this 36 years ago and I am now the old man. Fantasy makes way for reality. The sensitive melody and lyrics made me cry then with an impending insight in the future. I cry now for the fact that the words were a prophecy all too vividly played out in real life.
Neil gave me a reason to challenge life with Hot August Night and is still part of my everyday existence.
Yes when we were young getting old was not a reality we lived each day for what it was. All too soon you look back and it is 36 years later. I too remember playing Hot August Night to death on my tape player

There are so many meanings and interpretations you could take from this song.
On the surface it reminds me of my father who was a carpenter - but it hints at lost or unrealised gifts and talents, lack of appreciation of people until they are gone, missed opportunities . It is just so deep. Just a superb song and one that I have enjoyed for over 30 years
Darüber sollte man einmal nachdenken . =(
This song breaks my heart, so beautiful... I've seen him 6 times live (I'm 27), EVERY TIME he delivers his heart and soul, quite literally makes love to his audience, as he describes.. Very few like him. And I'm not even gay!
I had the good fortune of seeing Neil perform in the 80's at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens. When he sang this song, thousands of people lit lighters. It was very impressive as the whole concert. Neil performed non-stop for 2 hours and 40 minutes and encouraged a lot of audience participation. My husband said we will never see another concert as great and he was right.
Wonderful piece of work, Neil. I have kept this song in my heart for 25 years.. Morningside has inspired me to produce a book that contains many of the poems that I wrote for my daughters as they grew. I call it For My hildren. The song's impact never diminishes or fails to bring tears gushing.
Neil has this way with communicating with people, that I can only admire, and wish I had the capability. I don't know what I am afraid of, but alas HE is not afraid. I admire him for that. This video is beautiful, and should have won awards. This song is AMAZING!!! He is my hero. I want to be like him.
This is a great song and a great visual. This video is from Neil's video titled "I'm glad you're here with me tonight". It's out of print on VHS, not sure if it is even available on DVD. You can probably find it on ebay. The best version of it in my opinion is on his greatest hits '66-92' album.
You most definetly have a great taste in music. You are mature for someone so young.I Started listening to ND in 1964. I too was 10yrs old. He is to me the greatest American singer/songwriter of all. His body of work is so vast w/almost 100 hits and counting. keep on listening to this great man and maybe someday you can write great music too. All the best...
Thank you, that was back in 1973. I think he is indeed one of the greatest American singer/songwriters. When you hear songs as Brookyn roads, And the grass won't pay no mind, Lady Magdalene. They are all so beautiful. Now recently with Oh Mary, Hell Yeah, it gives me the shivers, Pretty amazing grace and Don't go there. And now I forget a lot of other songs. He makes such a lot of fine music that he will never be Forgotten. All the best to you all too.
Love the video, but his voice is so much more moving and powerful when he does the song on the HOT AUGUST NIGHT LP (CD) for you youngsters. Moves me to tears every time!
I have heard this song over the years and still come up with the same conclusion, Neil writes beautiful songs of life in general and can relate to just about anyone. Listen to the words, we have, or will be there at some point in our own lives.
Morningside, the old man died. And no one cried. They simply turned away. When he died. He left a table made of nails and pride. And with his hands, he carved these words inside. For my children. And the legs were shaped with his hands. Ahh the top was made of oaken wood. And all of the children who gathered around this great table,
and touched it w/their laughter. Ahh, that was good. Morningside. An old man died. And no one cried. He surely died alone. Truth is sad. For matter a child would claim the gift he had. The words he carved became his epitaph. For my children. Home! Home! Home! Home!
It's a sad commentary to the human condition when families feel the old has lived out their usefulness. They get discarded to a nursing home, or worse-are left to fend for themselves. Neil Diamond gives us a glimpse, and questions us in regards to our elders. And whether or not we will be there for them, as they were their for us. Thank you ND for this fantasy that speaks truth.
Have we done enough for our grandparents? And will we be their for them when it is their time to go home?.

Heartbreaking; it could happen to any of us, and Neil communicates this possibility so poignantly. I cried when I first heard it, as a young woman, and I still cry at 60 years old, with my husband, children and grandchildren. He is blessed with a gift, of writing wonderful melodies, lyrics, and then delivering them so movingly. I can still rock and roll with him, I can laugh, cry, or just be still and think my thoughts. Thank you for sharing this video-it's amazing.
I've listened this song thousands of times in the last...thirty years of my life, and it moves me like the first time I heard it. I need to close my eyes and only feel my soul living. Thanks Neil.
My goodness. What a gorgeous man he was. Love me some Neil. I remember hearing that song as a child and picturing an old man alone with that old table. Thank you mom, for giving me the gift of Neil.
This song is exceptionally beautiful! But the best version ever is on his live double CD Hits. That live version is amazing and tranquil. And since I can't find it performed, I settle for anything on this song.
I think I've only ever heard this one once before. If you like Neil songs, and you've got a spare moment. I'd appreciate it if you'd have a listen to some of my covers of his songs. I've had good feedback so far, and requests for more so I must be doing something right :)

I thank my lovely wife and her family for loving their parents unconditionally.
My father-n-law is now 90 yrs. old and still lives w/us and I value his stories and company. At least his will not die alone.

like this song and that sometimes that I think of my gradfather who was a capenter. and that what he left behind. I always think about him and that he died to soon.
We all miss him very much and that we wish that he is here with us today. I know that when people die that it is very hard on the family and that we much go on and when we go to heaven we will see him

Sorry Neil - it is no fantasy it is my father
The gifts he gave he hid -
And he was a carpenter
And I do things and I think he did not teach me this - but I saw him do it and I learnt.
He gave me independence.
Not to be him ... but myself

my grandfather gave me a watch which i lost thru not being careful enough!

Neil brings the realization that we all have open books in our Life. This song
brings to the forefront the meaning of Love and personal Conviction. The gift
and Loving Memory revolved around a Table that an Elderly man had built
for Family. It was his legacy yet it was in his loneliness he died, and his
only gift to remind them was a Table he built to commend his love for his Children.
docanaheim55 1 year ago
This song reminds me of my father who died alone, except for his 2 dogs who were his kids. He lay near his kitchen table. This song was posted on here on the date of his funeral. The epitaph on his headstone is 'For My Children'. I remember my Dad playing this song to me as a child. His favourite song was Crunchy Granola Suite recorded live at the Hot August Night concert with orchestra. I love him and miss him so much. Neil is a link to him :).
kimberley318 1 year ago 2
I used to listen to his songs when I was a little boy. I remember he dropped some thoughts on one of his covers of LP (long play records at speed 33 ;-) stating that he wished if not all but some of his songs may be remembered and looked upon as masterpieces (comparable to Beethoven or Mozart). That would make him proud...
As far as I am concerned, I whistle his tunes every now and then as they are simply unforgettable. Parts of my youth.
Morningside is one of my all time favourites. Thx

A friend of mine told me that, because this song had the words "for my children" in it, he had sung it for his father on his birthday. As he was singing the song, he realized he'd made a mistake in choosing this song. Stalwart soul that he is, he had to continue on to the end.
Now, when I listen to this song, I can't stop laughing when I imagine the look on his dad's face as his son, the apple of his eye, sang his heart out about the futility of all his father's efforts in life. lol
OldRazzleDazzle 2 years ago
this song is not about his father's futile life..but about the lack of love and consideration on his family's side...he labored long and hard to give them love and laughter and they had no regard for his emotions and feelings...

From Neil's biography "Solitary Star":
