You need to try and go with the motion of the bat, instead of trying to completely stop it. Also, I don't know for sure, but I am guessing you are using an aluminum bat? If so, I think a wooden bat would hurt less. But again, when catching the bat, don't try to stop it so much. Also, I think you are getting the opposite end, because you are probably not spinning it quite fast enough.

After watching this video, I decided to see if I could do it---I had a pretty good hunch I could---, and I was able to do it quite well after only 30 minutes of practice. Really, it's not that hard. Once you get the timing down, and the feel for it, it's a piece of cake. Go try it for yourself, you'll see.
