We have the same issue in Australia, however this is really about science catching up. HIV can be prevelant in blood upto six weeks before it is detected. If a person donates blood, it is tested, however to reduce the risk of infected blood being used, they minimise this risk even further by trying to restrict people who have a higher risk of contracting HIV from giving blood. I am a gay man and now understand, one day hopefully screening will become better and I will be able to donate too

I saw maybe 5 gays in a two week span, where I saw approximately 22 straights in the same time span. Both were at risk, but the straight ones led a much more risky lifestyle.

@mejitterbug In the first years after the ELISA/Western Blot HIV tests were available, I would totally agree with you. Back then, there was a significant number of people who contracted disease from blood transfusions due, in part, to a long testing window. With modern testing, that window has really shrunk and the chances are miniscule. All blood recipients face a tiny but nevertheless real risk of disease. It's unfair to single out gay men as a demographic group for this anymore.

Second of all, being supposedly at risk for a disease does NOT mean that you have the disease. Diabetes is very common among black men, but they're still allowed to give blood. It's a double standard and it's discrimination.

The facts are, HIV is more prevalent in the black community, and in the gay community. No one is blaming AIDS on either community, but they are saying the circumstances of the culture in both leads to a higher risk of HIV. As someone who has had chronic transfusions since the early 80's I'm very grateful that they are taking a better look into HIV stats. They stopped paying for donations to eliminate drug users and homeless people who were at a higher risk for carrying HIV among other STD'S.
Another fact is in many cases it can take up to 6 months for HIV to be detectable. Which means someone could be infected and not even know it. And then give blood at a work drive, a church drive, etc. So I don't believe this case to be a racial or attacking gays. Its a matter of trying to narrow down the chance of HIV transmission. They aren't asking the color of your skin, they want to know what the chances of you having been exposed are.

HIV has declined sharply in the gay population, thanks to safe sex. It has increased among blacks and young whites. Gays make up the smallest percentage of HIV among the 3 groups. @NuLaifMusic Yes but the 6 months to a year is before testing becomes positive in all people who have a new infection. Therefore, it's not always apparent until that time has passed. Say I got it today and gave blood tomorrow. there remains a small chance that the test will be negative, but that I could still give it to someone else.

You know at my old school half of the blood was thrown out at our blood drive because it was infected with HIV and only two percentage of the student body were gay. HIV testing is not full proof, if you have contracted HIV it can take up to a year for you to test positive, and as a medical professional I can tell you that I have personally seen many gay men using IV drugs to try and block out their fear and shame of who they are......

Gay men are far more likely to exibit more risque behavior esp if they are in the closet, the numbers of HIV have been steadly growing over the years and the super AIDS virus has only appeared in the gay com. and Thank God the virus seems to be to fast acting to spead out of control. I have many Gay friends who all had trouble coming out and a fair bit of them used drugs to numb themselves to the pain and fear.

We have the same issue in Australia, however this is really about science catching up. HIV can be prevelant in blood upto six weeks before it is detected. If a person donates blood, it is tested, however to reduce the risk of infected blood being used, they minimise this risk even further by trying to restrict people who have a higher risk of contracting HIV from giving blood. I am a gay man and now understand, one day hopefully screening will become better and I will be able to donate too

I saw maybe 5 gays in a two week span, where I saw approximately 22 straights in the same time span. Both were at risk, but the straight ones led a much more risky lifestyle.

Back then, there was a significant number of people who contracted disease from blood transfusions due, in part, to a long testing window. With modern testing, that window has really shrunk and the chances are miniscule. All blood recipients face a tiny but nevertheless real risk of disease. It's unfair to single out gay men as a demographic group for this anymore.

The facts are, HIV is more prevalent in the black community, and in the gay community. No one is blaming AIDS on either community, but they are saying the circumstances of the culture in both leads to a higher risk of HIV. As someone who has had chronic transfusions since the early 80's I'm very grateful that they are taking a better look into HIV stats. They stopped paying for donations to eliminate drug users and homeless people who were at a higher risk for carrying HIV among other STD'S.

Another fact is in many cases it can take up to 6 months for HIV to be detectable. Which means someone could be infected and not even know it. And then give blood at a work drive, a church drive, etc. So I don't believe this case to be a racial or attacking gays. Its a matter of trying to narrow down the chance of HIV transmission. They aren't asking the color of your skin, they want to know what the chances of you having been exposed are.

You know at my old school half of the blood was thrown out at our blood drive because it was infected with HIV and only two percentage of the student body were gay. That being said I'm sick of this whole Gays=Aids stereotype and just because you are black and haven't come out of the closet yet doesn't mean that your chances of getting HIV will go up.

@crapolaist You are wrong it has nothing to do with discrimination, Homosexual males are far more likely to use drugs and have unprotected sex than any other group, because of the shame that has been foisted upon them. HIV testing is not full proof, if you have contracted HIV it can take up to a year for you to test positive, and as a medical professional I can tell you that I have personally seen many gay men using IV drugs to try and block out their fear and shame of who they are......

@crapolaist I work in medicine so I have a good idea about what I am speaking about. Gay men are far more likely to exibit more risque behavior esp if they are in the closet, the numbers of HIV have been steadly growing over the years and the super AIDS virus has only appeared in the gay com. and Thank God the virus seems to be to fast acting to spead out of control. I have many Gay friends who all had trouble coming out and a fair bit of them used drugs to numb themselves to the pain and fear.

The Super AIDS virus does exist and luckily has not had more than 100 cases reported when I last looked part of the reason for this is its very leathality. @crapolaist We also have strict rules about people who use IV drugs, there is simply to much at risk to not have these regulations in place. I couldn't in good faith take blood from any of these high risk groups and put it in our blood banks, should we really be putting these people who have been in a trama esp young children at risk of even if they survive they might then test + HIV/AIDS? Could you give blood to a child with out knowing that every possible risk has been addressed as best we can

If there are so many blood shortages, why don't they accept blood from everyone they know is virus free? Not only is it a waste of good blood to not allow gay people to donate, but it's just so old fashioned and homophobic! HIV is transmitted through vaginal, anal, or oral sex, contaminated needles, between mother and baby during pregnancy, and breastfeeding.

I'm sorry, but blood donation centres don't forbid black people from donating blood even though they are also at an elevated risk (making up almost 40% of 2009's newly infected MSM - from CDC website) because that would be racist. The ban on blood donations does not specifically target "openly gay men", but rather any male who has had sexual contact with another mail since the HIV epidemic began. This would include gay people of ALL RACES, including blacks.
I don't see any prejudice at play here, just common sense epidemiology.
