The destruction of Frostmourne didn't remove the corruption of Nerzhul. The moment The Ashbringer destroys Frostmourne, Arthas is still controlled by Nerzhul (he's still the Lich King) you can tell by what he says etc in game. Control is lost when the helm is removed. When Arthas is dropped by the surrounding spirits, he loses the helm and tries to reach out for it but fails and becomes Arthas again.
Arthas only took the throne of the Lich King because he thought the power it provided would end the war of his people,but evil overpowered him. He didn't want to be evil,that's why when he sees his father he asks,"Is it over?"
I love how Blizzard sets up a HUGE storyline for all of this,it makes the game even more worth while. Keep it up Blizz.

No, it's not. The lich king was created by the Burning Legion in order to control the scourge as a weapon. The Legion wanted to conquer Azeroth, not destroy it.

If they would've been able to destroy everything without a leader they would easily have destroyed the horde with someone who can organise them? And although I'm not sure, I think the scourges purpose was to whipe out all humanoids on azeroth, or at least the ones who could pose a threat to the burning legion.
As a matter of fact the Horde was the lesser of the problems the BL faced on the third war. I mean the Alliance beat them on the second war so they were they primary target (guess why the scourge started on Lordaeron the capital of the Alliance at that time).
Sure now the New Horde is a force to be rekoned with but at the time the third war started the New Horde was just a bunch of orchis clans without the suport of Trolls nor Taurens.
Well the real Lich King was Ner`zul and he was a orc warlock before Kil'jaeden ravaged and destroyed his body, but kept his spirit alive and encased it in a block of ice from the Twisting Nether thing. So yea.

Haven't played WoW and don't intend to, but I've been a fan of the universe since the first game. I was disappointed to see Arthas suffer for the rest of his life. He was a good man. Taking him through the human campaign in WC3 was a treat and Blizzard did a great job making a memorable character. (No surprise there) I just wish he'd been afforded some measure of peace and redemption before his end.

heres how it went, as the heroes finally reached arthas, he were left in a critical state in his mind, the last piece of his soul that were kept alive in his body, was not consumed by frostmourne.. yet the lich king, still tried to release himself from arthas body, so he could reach his helm, that lied on the throne-floor. yet arthas kept him from doing that as he were in pain, tortured and weakened, he gave up the, as arthas refused to let him reach it in time.. so he let´d himself die before.
It is Ner'zhul who is the Litch king, his spirit is in the Helm. It fused with Arthas at the end of Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne. Bolvar will stay good as long as he can keep Ner'zhuls spirit at bay.
Apprently Ner'zul was killed by arthas. Read on wow wiki it says how in a dream state arthas basically owns ner'zhul and he then hears no more from him

"only darkness for me" could mean very many things, of course theres "Hell" but do we even know of a Hell for Azerothians or a Heaven for that matter. It could also mean his site is failing, the connection between him and the Demon blinded him. We will never know, he is dead.
@KlubbNogginbonker in Warcraft lore, the light represents holiness and good/heaven so I'm guessing when he says "I see only darkness for me" thats him acknowleging he is going to "hell". thats my take on it anyways, He knows he abandoned the light and the light has abandoned him as well.
the way i interperet it is that he see darkness before him in the sense of what he has caused. he wasnt concious inside his body while the lich king was controlling him and now that he is free of it he realized what he caused, darkness. but either way this was an AMAZING ending to the expansion and it did no disappoint.

Why would it link to Cataclysm? This is still WoTLK. What did you want, Deathwing to pop out of the ground and suprise them all? This is the closing chapter in the Lich King's story, and Arthas, his father (as a ghost), Bolvar and Tirion are all involved deeply. Believe it or not, it made 100% sense. The frostmourne has been shattered, and so Arthas' soul has been released along with his fathers'. Bolvar is the new Lich King, because they have said before there must always be one.
Tirion Fordring and Bolvar Fordragon fought side by side during second war with Uther the Lightbringer.
Tirion went in exile after the scarlet crusade murdered his sos Taelan (old lvl 60 quest) and both with bolvar are members of The silver Hand (council of Paladins)
Gilneas was a Human Kingdom that tried to fight against scourge using the metamporphosis before it was left unchecked and uncontrolled because of Agural.

Arthas had a small bit of his human empathy left that prevented him from unleashing the Scourges full hellish wrath on the world.

It's comforting to know that Arthas defeats the heroes/the raid during the encounter, and Tirion Fordring begs for a blessing from the holy light, which bestows his wish, this fucks Arthas over as he reanimated the fallen raid members to become his great champions and slay Fordring for him as he watches and laughs.
But alas, not so, as Arthas get's pwnd by good always wins over bad through some miracle, Terenas comes forth and mass ressurects the raid and then people get to nuke the last %'s

Haven't played WoW and don't intend to, but I've been a fan of the universe since the first game. I was disappointed to see Arthas suffer for the rest of his life. He was a good man. Taking him through the human campaign in WC3 was a treat and Blizzard did a great job making a memorable character. (No surprise there) I just wish he'd been afforded some measure of peace and redemption before his end.

@jenoa01 Inorite? Kaelthas has a similar sucky end. He becomes fully tainted by fel magic and serves Kil'Jaden against Ilidan. He eventually goes back into Azeroth, betrays the rest of the elves, and tries summoning him through the sunwell before he's ultimately slain by the players.

heres how it went, as the heroes finally reached arthas, he were left in a critical state in his mind, the last piece of his soul that were kept alive in his body, was not consumed by frostmourne.. yet the lich king, still tried to release himself from arthas body, so he could reach his helm, that lied on the throne-floor. yet arthas kept him from doing that as he were in pain, tortured and weakened, he gave up the, as arthas refused to let him reach it in time.. so he let´d himself die before.

It is Ner'zhul who is the Litch king, his spirit is in the Helm. It fused with Arthas at the end of Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne. Bolvar will stay good as long as he can keep Ner'zhuls spirit at bay.

Apprently Ner'zul was killed by arthas. Read on wow wiki it says how in a dream state arthas basically owns ner'zhul and he then hears no more from him

no you idiots, arthas was never meant to be evil, frostmorune made him evil...so, the lich king is not evil...he just controls the scourge. that's why he said "there must always be a lich king" the reason we kill arthas is because he's evil because of FROSTMOURNE. ashbringer will destroy frostmourne, therefor bolvar will not be evil..and he will control the scourge

Arthas is dead and Bolvar is now the new lich king. So why in the cataclysm trailer it says "As the terrible war against the Lich King continues" Even though Arthas is dead now...

"only darkness for me" could mean very many things, of course theres "Hell" but do we even know of a Hell for Azerothians or a Heaven for that matter. It could also mean his site is failing, the connection between him and the Demon blinded him. We will never know, he is dead.

the way i interperet it is that he see darkness before him in the sense of what he has caused. he wasnt concious inside his body while the lich king was controlling him and now that he is free of it he realized what he caused, darkness. but either way this was an AMAZING ending to the expansion and it did no disappoint.

He was dying from the gas but the dragons came and burnt the fumes away, in turn they burnt bolvars dying body.... The lich king who retreated into the citadel must have waited for the dragons to fly off before retrieving bolvar and taking him hostage in the citadel along with Saurfang Jr. body.

The orange (green) glow is indeed due to the flames of the dragons, who incinerated the battlefield after the events at Angrathar the Wrathgate.

Why would it link to Cataclysm? This is still WoTLK. What did you want, Deathwing to pop out of the ground and suprise them all? This is the closing chapter in the Lich King's story, and Arthas, his father (as a ghost), Bolvar and Tirion are all involved deeply. Believe it or not, it made 100% sense. The frostmourne has been shattered, and so Arthas' soul has been released along with his fathers'. Bolvar is the new Lich King, because they have said before there must always be one.

Tirion Fordring and Bolvar Fordragon fought side by side during second war with Uther the Lightbringer.
Tirion went in exile after the scarlet crusade murdered his sos Taelan (old lvl 60 quest) and both with bolvar are members of The silver Hand (council of Paladins)
Gilneas was a Human Kingdom that tried to fight against scourge using the metamporphosis before it was left unchecked and uncontrolled because of Agural.

@paramorebestbandevr Bolvar is a stalwart knight of the allys, and Regent of Storwmind during Wrynns absence. By human, I dont know if you mean Tirion, who is a heroic paladin, or Teranas, who is Arthas' father and former king of Lorderan. 2nd, there must always be a Lich King, for if there is not, the Scourge would run a bloodthirsty campaign across all of Azeroth. Arthas had a small bit of his human empathy left that prevented him from unleashing the Scourges full hellish wrath on the world.

It's comforting to know that Arthas defeats the heroes/the raid during the encounter, and Tirion Fordring begs for a blessing from the holy light, which bestows his wish, this fucks Arthas over as he reanimated the fallen raid members to become his great champions and slay Fordring for him as he watches and laughs.
But alas, not so, as Arthas get's pwnd by good always wins over bad through some miracle, Terenas comes forth and mass ressurects the raid and then people get to nuke the last %'s
