I absolutely love both of them. Watch Emily's face starting at about 2:48. I don't know why, but I love the way that smile slowly grows onto her face.
It looks like their just standing next to each other. And they both have wo arms. I realize they can't do it since its theatre, but where are they supposed to be conjoined?
@TheJMSmovies I think the hip? The show is based off of the lives of two real conjoined twins who would tap-dance. I think they were joined at the hip. Just guessing though XD
I love both of em but Alice is overpowering the other one a bit. Needs a little more blend. She can wail though. Clearly better suited to sing solo haha
The thing that amazes me? They don't look like they're even trying. Both of them were fantastic here, and I hope they still are now - A Rip is an amazing actress in Next to Normal even though her voice has faded a little with age. She still has that quality which makes her special.
@ramenlover65 Excuse me?! She most definitely does not do cocaine. I'm not trying to sound like some stupid obsessive fan at the moment (because I'm not), but that is absolutely not true. I actually know Ms. Ripley personally (as well as her wonderful husband), and I know for a fact that she doesn't do drugs. So stop being a little hissy bitch and check your facts, asshole.
@musiqaltrader really?! me saying she does cocaine makes me a hissy bitch. thats dumb as shit get your headass out of here cuz that was just misplaced
@ramenlover65 Maybe because she's been doing Next to Normal for the past 3 years, pretty much non-stop. Just a thought. She's had to adopt a new technique when she sings because of the vocal damage N2N has caused her. If you think you're vocally prepared to sing one of the hardest female roles on Broadway (or Tour), then I'd like to see you be the next Diana on the Second National Tour. I'm sure I could talk to Alice and get you in.
It was my great privilege to see this show on Broadway during its short run. These two amazing actresses were inspiring and the memory of this song haunts me to this day.
@silentguh no, it's not just MY opinion. anyone who has seen her recently knows how bad she is now. look, i love her and she can still act amazingly, but she damaged her voice somehow and she sounds bad. fact.
@philljcrazy101 Well I saw the show for the 3rd time a couple of weeks ago and while she was extremely vocally tired, I thought that the strain worked well for her character. It did not distract whatsoever from my perception of Diana. P.S. Once again, NOT A FACT, JUST AN OPINION! It doesn't matter how many people agree with your opinion, that doesn't solidify it. Don't be a know-it-all.
@philljcrazy101 I saw her performance in Cleveland two nights ago (five rows from the stage and in the center) and she was great. The actor playing Gabe seemed to be the one struggling a little with his voice a few times that night, but other than being drowned out by the musicians on a couple of occasions, Alice sounded fine.
My opinion, of course. But it does differ from yours.
Funny enough I actulay first head this song before hearing about the musical I though it was sweet then we I heard they where conjointed twins....it was still sweet but it became a little funny to me.
This show has such a ridiculous idea for a story when you first hear what it's about, but it just completely works. It's such a sensitive, emotionally charged piece. They should have won :(
This musical seems like it's going to be a challenge. My highschool has selected this to be the musical for the year. I was casted as Buddy and I'm extremely extatic about it, but this musical seems VERY challenging.
Yes, we all get that they can't PHYSICALLY leave each other, but it is an expression of love that they will never be emotionally apart. Stop being so cynical! Sheesh...
Okay, great song... but... can we talk about how literal this is? I mean, she CAN'T leave the other. Maybe if the lyrics were a little better, just sayin'
I love, love, love this version/performance of this song...simple, straight-forward and honest. Bravo...that's how classic songs should be presented...
I CANNOT get over this. There voices are flawless together. Emily Skinner needs to do more because she's fantastic. So gorgeous. And A-Rip? Seriously, I have no words to describe how wonderful this is.
KILLS IT. I mean, call a janitor, get a mop and bucket ... blood across the stage ... kills it. Amazingly beautiful. Tears every single time I watch it.
since I saw Alice Ripley in Next to normal I´m a huge fan of hers! You go girl! Keep working! I´m sure we will hear a lot about you in the next years :-)
@MusicStudyMan I think that's kind of the point... I don't know how familiar you are with the show, but they're conjoined twins, and if they moved about, it would probably end up coming off as if they were fighting to go in different directions or dragging each other along. I personally find the contrast between their stillness and the majesty of the stage very powerful.
The person/people who think this is dumb are missing the real point here. Whether or not they can *physically* leave each other is irrelevant -- they are declaring love and affection for each other. To have such a strong bond with someone is remarkable, and that's what this song celebrates: unity, family, love.

@cipkid292 Exactly. They mean they will never emotionally leave each other. That even though they should want to pull away they will have faith that they can overcome the world's cruelty together. I think the writer chose the statement because he wanted people to stop and think for a second about what's really being said. Not understanding this is a silly as hearing "I Miss The Mountains" and thinking "but she's not on a mountain..."
I was on the facebook page for broadway across America & someone asked what the most underappreciated broadway show was. The votes were nearly 50/50- this & chess.

What an utterly dumb musical and this number is the biggest boner I have ever seen on Broadway. They are Siamese Twins singing that they won't leave each other... I howled. This was dumber than the closing to Ballroom...50 Per Cent where they thought the audience would sympathize with an adultress. Dumb.
OMG!!!! Alice's "We were meant to share each moment" was amazing!!!!!! It gave me chills. The ending from 2:17 to the end always gives me chills. This is the best capture of this song that I have ever seen.
@BeautifullyTragicLFB They couldn't figure out how to sell it to theater goers nor the Tony voters...the night I saw it the theater was nearly empty. It's was a phenomenal show, but it's dark and complex- people accept that from Sondheim, but not from many others.
@xxboxers1 But the show (obviously) has a huge cult following. I think that eventually a revival would do well on Broadway. Maybe a reworked or slightly rewritten version like they did with Chicago?
@LoftierThanMine Agree completely, and I hope that a talented team brings it back. It does have a reputation now that would help sell it that it lacked the first go around, and the last several seasons have shown that musical audiences are open to more unusual subject matter- did we ever think that a musical about bipolar disorder would win three major Tonys? Some shows just are ahead of their time (Chicago) and some just need to be reworked (Assassins). We can hope!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@LoftierThanMine No one will bother to revive this crap. It was one of the worst shows I have ever seen...and I have seen nearly a thousand performances on Broadway.
@xxboxers1 Just checked- it was up against The Lion King, Ragtime, and The Scarlet Pimpernel. The Lion King won. Three of those four were excellent shows. Skinner/Ripley lost to Natasha Richardson for the revival of Cabaret. No comment.

@xxboxers1 The Tony should have gone to Marin Mazzie in Ragtime. Side Show was crap and that closing number was hilarious. Siamese twins singing about not leaving each other...the audience howled when I saw it.
I know! They muddled the opening, but they rolled it off so amazingly that you could never tell unless you knew the lyrics beforehand. They don't even show it on their faces. :3
The reason this show and these women are so fanastic is proven in this video: It's the Tony awards, yet their performance is just two people on a bare stage, standing there and singing. It's so raw and pure, this show doesn't need massive sets or effects to be stunning. I love how honest this performance is.
This is absolutely my favourite show ever. It is such a powerful story. They are both so unbelievably talented. Is it just me, but do their eyes look kind of funny? I think it's just the video quality, but I feel like they need more distiction on the part of the eye more towards the nose. *shrug* Oh well, they're still stunning.
i love this! when i first saw this i didnt look at the title so i didnt know it was alice and then i was like "WOAH! omg it sounds like alice ripley" and it was! they are amazing.
In terms of harmonies, yeah Alice belts the higher ones EXCEPT for the last note, where they switch and Emily is in head voice on the higher note. This is written into the score as well. :-)
Really? Because at the end it seems that Alice has more of an "O" and emily has an "Oo" vowel; whoever was singing the top part sounds like she was singing an "Oo" vowel. Or is the high note at the end the lower part? (Not being sarcastic.)
Yeah, Alice is belting the higher harmonies. However, at the end, it does look like Emily is going into head voice (aka not belting) and singing the higher pitch for the last note.
@andsectumsempra for year I thought alice sung that final note but I just realized Emily jumps up to her head voice there... Gorgeous blending!! Wish they could still sing this song like this
YES YES YES!!! And may I add that my dream cast would be Stephanie J. Block & Sutton Foster (Daisy & Violet), Cheyenne Jackson (Buddy), Hugh Jackman (Terry Conner), and Brian Stokes Mitchel and Norm Lewis Jello (r) wrestling in thongs for the role of Jake :)
incredible performance tho, plus its said that Daisy died four days before Violet did. how sad would it be to not only have to greive the loss of the sister you spent all your life attached to, but to have to sleep, eat and walk around with a dead body with you everywhere you go...
May I just take this moment to comment on how difficult it must have been to stand so perfectly still the entire time. Nerves make you want to move, and not just nerves, but being into the song makes you want to move. Props to them for the amazing self-control.
They should have won the Tony for Best Leading Actress in a Musical, not Bebe Neuwirth. If you remember they were the first ever pair to be nominated for one Tony award
It was Natasha Richardson who won for Cabaret that year - Bebe won the Tony the previous year. But I totally agree that these two should have taken home the award.
Yeah...close close CLOSE call. One of the closest there had been in years...and I'm really not sure the race has been so close since. But man...Natasha just blew it outta the park! If they hadn't have run in the same year, the twins would have taken it.
I don't really understand how you get that. Or maybe you are referring to the farewell they are saying to their men, becuase to me it seems that they are not saying farewell to each other but promising eternal support, love, and of course, presence. For Good strikes me as more of a "I'll never see you again, but thanks, much love" kind of thing.
They're saying I will never leave you, even if men and such do... It's a pun in a way because they're conjoined twins so no shit they can't leave each other lol.
omgomgomg...... im freaking out right now! thank you so much for posting this!!!!!! this is such an amazing song and they are both so incredible...... i want to see Alice in N2N soooo bad!!!!

It's so raw and pure, this show doesn't need massive sets or effects to be stunning. I love how honest this performance is.

amazing. alice ripley owns

I hate to be one of those annoying "omg, no one will ever be better than the OBC" brats, but...
This is one of the single greatest performances I have ever seen of any song, ever.

@slothyslothsloth That would be the Alice Ripley Crazy Eyes Acting Style. =P

im playing daisy in my school show! my friend is violet! daisy is the higher note and violet is the lower
MarAndDar1234321 2 years ago
In terms of harmonies, yeah Alice belts the higher ones EXCEPT for the last note, where they switch and Emily is in head voice on the higher note. This is written into the score as well. :-)
BwayPianist391 2 years ago
Does anyone know who is belting the higher harmonies?
PelProRS09 2 years ago
Alice.
andsectumsempra 2 years ago
Really? Because at the end it seems that Alice has more of an "O" and emily has an "Oo" vowel; whoever was singing the top part sounds like she was singing an "Oo" vowel. Or is the high note at the end the lower part? (Not being sarcastic.)
TogetherUnlimited 2 years ago
Yeah, Alice is belting the higher harmonies. However, at the end, it does look like Emily is going into head voice (aka not belting) and singing the higher pitch for the last note.

Which twin is Alice playing?
mo0otube 2 years ago
Violet.
andsectumsempra 2 years ago
Thanks a bunch. I'm auditioning for this show in about a month, and I wanted to know which twin I should audition for. Daisy:)

@andsectumsempra for year I thought alice sung that final note but I just realized Emily jumps up to her head voice there... Gorgeous blending!! Wish they could still sing this song like this
Fnessundorma 1 year ago
@PelProRS09 The high harmonies change, they each get some. U have to watch the mouth positino really closely to get it..
circuitmedic 1 year ago
@PelProRS09 Except at the end Alice does the lower note.

Anyone else think it's about time for a revival?
yanks2 2 years ago 19
YES YES YES!!! And may I add that my dream cast would be Stephanie J. Block & Sutton Foster (Daisy & Violet), Cheyenne Jackson (Buddy), Hugh Jackman (Terry Conner), and Brian Stokes Mitchel and Norm Lewis Jello (r) wrestling in thongs for the role of Jake :)

anyone else find it weird that one of the most powerfully broadway ballads ever is sung by and about two siamese twins.....
i just thought that was funny....
KaraokeKid22 2 years ago 5
incredible performance tho, plus its said that Daisy died four days before Violet did. how sad would it be to not only have to greive the loss of the sister you spent all your life attached to, but to have to sleep, eat and walk around with a dead body with you everywhere you go...
creepy

oh my god really! that is so gross!
couldnt they just cut them off since the one is already dead and it would hurt her anymore?

fucking amazing! seriously!

May I just take this moment to comment on how difficult it must have been to stand so perfectly still the entire time. Nerves make you want to move, and not just nerves, but being into the song makes you want to move. Props to them for the amazing self-control.
genungapearl 2 years ago
They should have won the Tony for Best Leading Actress in a Musical, not Bebe Neuwirth. If you remember they were the first ever pair to be nominated for one Tony award
WWEQAF 2 years ago 2
It was Natasha Richardson who won for Cabaret that year - Bebe won the Tony the previous year. But I totally agree that these two should have taken home the award.
andsectumsempra 2 years ago
Yeah...close close CLOSE call. One of the closest there had been in years...and I'm really not sure the race has been so close since. But man...Natasha just blew it outta the park! If they hadn't have run in the same year, the twins would have taken it.

i feel like this song falls into For Good from Wicked... A song of farwell in away...
SeanKelley184 2 years ago
I don't really understand how you get that. Or maybe you are referring to the farewell they are saying to their men, becuase to me it seems that they are not saying farewell to each other but promising eternal support, love, and of course, presence. For Good strikes me as more of a "I'll never see you again, but thanks, much love" kind of thing.
genungapearl 2 years ago 2
They're saying I will never leave you, even if men and such do... It's a pun in a way because they're conjoined twins so no shit they can't leave each other lol.
