Some three dot setups have the impact point _under_ the middle dot in front blade. Not where the front blade ends. First is better for fast shooting IMO. Latter for target shooting with no time limit.
if i were to shoot a weapon with the same sights, would the bullet travel to the center if the white circle on the front sight or will it go to the top flat part of the front sight?
Miller I have always shot, and shot pretty good. I have never thought to make the front sight clear and the rest be blurry. Seriously, I never thought of that, I tend to shoot low with all my guns, so I hold up a little higher. I will be going to my rang and try that out.
@inquieto714 The farther you are, the higher above where you intend to place the round you'll want to aim. For instance, at 30 yards with a weaker caliber pistol you may have to aim at the head if you intend to hit the chest. While with a round with more velocity you'll probably only need to aim a couple of inches high. Look up the drop/distance of the round you fire and practice at all distances so that adjusting becomes 2nd nature.
@mryesterday If you have a Colt 45 then do not think that is a gun. Just think you are Mike Tyson and squeeze the handle and punch 1 BIG punch hope u can open fire!!
I hate that gun, lucky they replace by Italian bad ass Beretta M9
- Terrible design!! when you reach the enemy and in your mind, you must SQUEEZE THE HANDLE in order to open fire!!!
I'm wearing 200 reading glass. Do you recommend using it during practice?Target for sure will be hazy and front and rear sight will be very clear. My problem is when I need to transition from 1 target to another;meaning shooting on the move maybe difficult and dangerous, Any advise is appreciated.
thanks. your video was informative. i'm 53 yrs old and wear progressive (multifocal) lenses. i can only see the front sight clearly if i tip my head up slightly. what do you suggest for us older guys? i could have my optometrist make glasses to focus at the front sight but that is not very practical because i'll be likely blurred at distance and real close.
I have this same pistol and I like the sights for the most part. Someone should make it so the front sight is a white square, and the back 2 dots are white squares as well. That way it literally makes a complete straight line with no gaps if it's aimed properly. I think that would help beginners. Even with my Ruger I struggle with sight alignment when I don't practice a lot.
When shooting open iron sights on a rifle, I place the front sight just below my target. Is it the same on a pistol? so you see your target? or do you actually cover your point of aim? I hit dead center with my .22 pistol by placing the front sight just beneath, but with my 9mm or .44 mag I am hitting slightly low and left ( I think I'm jerking the trigger - anticipating recoil)
5 months later heh, it's a P95. I have the same model but with a stainless slide. Very good pistols, durable and they take a beating. I can fire ~750 rounds before it has issues cycling due to residue.
Hey Mr Miller, I know this video is a bit old but I was wondering about proper site picture with a Sig Sauer P226. I have read it is different compared to the sights of lets say a Berreta 92FS. If you use the same suggestion as this video with a Sig Sauer P226, the gun tends to shoot low. I've let a few range masters try this out and the same results occured. Any ideas or suggestions for training?
Can you also point out what a 6 o'clock sight picture looks like? Some guns come from the factory using a 6 o'clock hold as opposed to the POA=POI style illustrated in your very helpful video.
Hey, Thats the Ruger P95 that I carry. Its a GREAT gun and Ruger makes'em like a TANK! Reliable too.....Thanks(We are going to the Rod-N-Gun Club range today at 8.Yippy!) Gonna shoot that Ruger P95/NEF Pardner 12GA Pump and my new Metro Arms: American Classic II M1911A1 45:)
@millerusaf Since you are a fan of the beretta 92fs, do you recommend the 2 or 3 dot sights. And if you have a handgun with 2 dot sights, could you do another video for its sight picture.
Im shooting like 6 inch groups at 25 yards. Is that any good, because to me it looks cruddy compared to others. What kind of groups do you usually get so I can use as refrence? thanks
so for how far away do you have to be to hit center the way you was aimin? cause wouldn't you aim higher or lower depending on your distance. when i shot i shot at like 10 to 15 yards away and for some reason when i aim at the center the way you show in the vid i hit low. i have only been shooting for like 8 months now do you think im doin something wrong or could it be my guns sights. o yea im shooting a g23 and a m&p40c which i just got two days ago.
@leewhite336 You may be anticipating recoil just a little bit which is causing you to pull your shots slightly low. Practice with dry fire, and concentrate on only moving your trigger finger to squeeze the trigger. At the range, the shot should come as a surprise to you.
@leewhite336 he was demonstrating a technique called "aim point of impact" it is fine for close targets but as you found out at distance you will be hitting low. and you would have to completely cover the target (beer bottle can rabbit whatever) with your sights. another way to aim is "high impact" you would aim at the bottom of the CIRCLE and adjust your elevation till the hits are in the bullseye. the advantage of this type is it takes into account bullet drop at distance and you can "track"
@leewhite336 cont...track your target if it is can move. which you cant do with the point of impact style because you are obscuring it with the posts. and since most pistol bullets drop dramatically at distance over 50 yards you effectively have sighted it in "point of impact" at 100 yards. just aim at the center of the target at 100 yards. lower 1/3 at 50 yds bottom 1/10 at 25yds bottom at 15yds and a lil space between target and aim at super close distance.
@leewhite336 at a human sized target just remember it will hit 3 inches high so if you aim directly at his heart at point blank you might hit im in the left shoulder. aim just high and right of his belly button (attackers left side) and it should hit him in the heart. or close enough to cause shock. most long distance shooter or hunters prefer the high impact method. police and military are 50/50. try it both ways see which you prefer
I just bought a Simth and wesson Revolver model 67 and for some reason the front sight is very high, the back sight is adjustable. when went to the range this weekend I was shooting way off target. Do i need to adjust the back sight or am i not aligning this properly? do you have a revolver you can do a similar video for please.
I don't know what the problem is with me but sometimes I get more shakes than that... It appears that with anything intricate aside from guns I tend to shake.. I have had people ask me why my hands shake soo much.. I do smoke cigarettes but still I don't know what causes it.. I bring this up because you mentioned the shakes in your vids.. Stupid shaky hands !!!
@mixwell1983 My hands shake too. You have to take deep breaths and separate yourself from the shaking as you focus on the target and focus on the front sight.
A good way to describe it is (night sights make it easier) keep the front sight dot on the target while forming a straight, horizontal line across all three dots, keeping the front dot perfectly in the middle.
Great quality on the video and great info. Thanks.

@hatheyrealldead Depends on the gun, I've seen both. And depends on the distance of course, at SOME distance the bullet will travel past both.
