it's just an opinion, but i don't care for the whistles on European steam trains. Their too high pitched and shrill for my tastes. Love the long, low, bellows of a big western steamer. The 4449 is auditory perfection to me :-)

some of the japanese hooters are pretty good too - look up 'Yamaguchi' - probably based on the American model. Mind you Stanier London Midland locos have a hooter - and one which you can hardly hear!

@edj66 Sadly it dropped a left-hand cylinder plug on the Mid-Hants last spring, causing the cylinder to explode and about £200k damage. You may be thinking of 4MT 75029.

Scottish Region (of the old BR) reintroduced steam first. They did it to help prevent the Fort William to Mallaig line from being closed (by far sadder bureaucrats in Head Office, London).

What kind of speed would a decent loco do? What about torque, I hear thay are quite muscular. How are thay mesured in terms of 'swept volume' ie cylinder capacity? I wish I could have been around in the days of steam, it would have been fascinating...

126mph (200kph) is the record, but about 100mph would be achievable by most main line express locos. In the days of steam, they were limited more by track layout, signalling, more freight trains etc.

Re: 'muscular' - There's a brand new UK steam loco called 'Tornado' which has just been built (based on a 1940s design). It featured on the 'Top Gear' TV programme, it did a 'wheelspin' at 75mph, pulling 10 coaches.

I checked on an OS map the bridge is 170 yards from the platform end, the loco takes between 4.5 to 5 seconds to travel the distance, that means it was travelling between 70 and 75 mph

I was on this tour and it left Salisbury nearly an hour late and made up more that 40 minutes on the return schedule. It felt as if and I think it's fair to say that the driver did NOT hang about. 73096 was a fantastic and reliable ML performer. 75 was probably the average max speed but coming through basingstoke had several of the ilepost watchers pretty excited!!

One of the magazines published a log - and the train was listed as 77mph through Andover - I have seen Tangmere through there a mile or two faster. The driver was Bryan Dudley Ward, who was known for giving it a go...but, I believe, succumbed to an illness not many months later.

One of the great things about this video is the authentic sound of jointed rail which you don't normally hear on modern steam videos.

On speed, I think the 75mph linit is fairly strictly observed - you see timings up to 78mph but never higher.

thanks for that! The line is cleared for 90 mph running - and the points are trailing, not facing...the engine is a 73000 - a 4-6-0 rather than a 2-6-0 - 17 tons heavier, with 2,000 lbs more tractive effort - well, that's what the book says!

ah, Brief Encounter ! David Lean enjoyed employing steam trains - and blowing them up! I've seen better moments - 45407 lifting itself out of Falmouth Harbour station - but my battery ran out ! - and 'Nelson at Night' was surreal...it's definitely an addiction - a good fix goes a long way these days !
