  • Is it 2003 or 1945?

  • How fast !! and what a wonderfull soud the horn is !!! 早っ!! カッケー!!!

  • They were a great class, went everywhere, and were very strong, the Caprottis in Scotland were especially admired by the old Stanier 5 crews....

  • Wow, that was pretty fast! :-o

  • 73096 possibly the best BR standard ever?

  • jesus that was fast!

  • Don't you ever dare stop capturing these great moments!

    Tom

  • This steam train thinks that he's a TGV train!!!!

  • This is my favourite. steam trains are a living power.

  • it's just an opinion, but i don't care for the whistles on European steam trains. Their too high pitched and shrill for my tastes. Love the long, low, bellows of a big western steamer. The 4449 is auditory perfection to me :-)

  • @salemcripple

some of the japanese hooters are pretty good too - look up 'Yamaguchi' - probably based on the American model. Mind you Stanier London Midland locos have a hooter - and one which you can hardly hear!

  • @willhayfield sweet, i'll have to check them out!

  • wow that's pretty fast!

  • Why isn't American steam allowed to go this fast?

  • AAAA. 041822Z NOV 2010 Good video this thank you for posting.......AR.

  • I think our a4s could beat your bullet trains "gayboyrunning"

  • the steam engine im stalking about is the 3801 steam engine

  • thats slow. u need to see the Green Bullet train in Australia.

  • Top draw

  • Wow thats the fastest i've seen a steam loco go. Great video and a nice angle

  • That was so good it brought tears to my eyes - excellent filming and thank you.

  • i do love this video

  • hey, thanks for that...it's luck more than judgement...on my part anyway!

  • Probably the best post '68 video of steam in the UK I've every seen. Very well done.

  • that definitely may have been one of the most fantastic things i've ever seen....

  • Have to say that this is in y favourites and I'm watching again as I await delivery today of my Aster Gauge 1 black 5MT kit. Hope my build performs this well!

  • wow

  • Fantastic clip ... you really get the sensation of power and speed.

  • Wow.

  • i would love to have been on the footplate driving that

  • This is one of the best Videos I have ever seen showing steam at speed. thanks

  • Brilliant video, you can feel the power of the beast in this one...

  • pressume it's not mainline permitted then anymore?

  • Isn't it on the NYMR?

  • @edj66 Sadly it dropped a left-hand cylinder plug on the Mid-Hants last spring, causing the cylinder to explode and about £200k damage. You may be thinking of 4MT 75029.

  • Вот это телега:))))

  • breathtaking stuff m8

steam lives up to his name right there :)

  • Now _this_ is what a passing steam train should be like... excellent!

  • DAAMMM, that was fast. Great work!

  • Scottish Region (of the old BR) reintroduced steam first. They did it to help prevent the Fort William to Mallaig line from being closed (by far sadder bureaucrats in Head Office, London).

  • Sorry to hijack, I am just trying to leave a message, but without luck so far:

That was so good it brought tears to my eyes - excellent filming and thank you.

  • @dazzler2910 anorak

  • I'm a fireman on the Lynton & Barnstaple railway, so i'm used to steam engines but standing that close must have been very scary!

  • Damn that was one hell of a loud pass!

  • What kind of speed would a decent loco do? What about torque, I hear thay are quite muscular. How are thay mesured in terms of 'swept volume' ie cylinder capacity? I wish I could have been around in the days of steam, it would have been fascinating...

  • 126mph (200kph) is the record, but about 100mph would be achievable by most main line express locos. In the days of steam, they were limited more by track layout, signalling, more freight trains etc.

Re: 'muscular' - There's a brand new UK steam loco called 'Tornado' which has just been built (based on a 1940s design). It featured on the 'Top Gear' TV programme, it did a 'wheelspin' at 75mph, pulling 10 coaches.

  • thats rapid!

  • o.k that was officially kewl as hell. great vid man!

  • Nice..

  • in russia we ly down on the tracks and have the train go over the top of us i would love to do it with that train

  • I reckon the internal crankshaft might do you some damage!

  • Doing what it was built to do! No nicer site.

  • i bet that smelt but very nice vid

  • That was an impressive steam train!! Thanks!!

  • I checked on an OS map the bridge is 170 yards from the platform end, the loco takes between 4.5 to 5 seconds to travel the distance, that means it was travelling between 70 and 75 mph

  • @0230179 I thought this engine was allowed at 75mph because of wheel diameter.

  • That has to be one of the best clips of a steam train, speed, smoke, noise and smell (well almost). Could you re load in higher quality? 10 stars from me!

  • I saw that go past a mile down the track :O

i was on my motocross bike down the local field :)

  • I was on this tour and it left Salisbury nearly an hour late and made up more that 40 minutes on the return schedule. It felt as if and I think it's fair to say that the driver did NOT hang about. 73096 was a fantastic and reliable ML performer. 75 was probably the average max speed but coming through basingstoke had several of the ilepost watchers pretty excited!!

  • One of the magazines published a log - and the train was listed as 77mph through Andover - I have seen Tangmere through there a mile or two faster. The driver was Bryan Dudley Ward, who was known for giving it a go...but, I believe, succumbed to an illness not many months later.

  • that cant be real... watch how the video speeds up just as the loco crosses the stilts of the bridge.

  • One of the great things about this video is the authentic sound of jointed rail which you don't normally hear on modern steam videos.

On speed, I think the 75mph linit is fairly strictly observed - you see timings up to 78mph but never higher.

  • I wouldn't say he developed or improved upon others designs particularly. Just he combined the best of different engineers and schools of engineering together.

  • Surely it is dangerous to take points at that speed at that angle..did the driver know that was coming? No one would have thought a BR Standard 76000 would be the best steam clip so far on youtube!

  • thanks for that! The line is cleared for 90 mph running - and the points are trailing, not facing...the engine is a 73000 - a 4-6-0 rather than a 2-6-0 - 17 tons heavier, with 2,000 lbs more tractive effort - well, that's what the book says!

  • You're right..I must have been half asleep! It is amazing to look at a shot of an engine in the scrap yard then see the same one running this fast. This shot is special because it is the only one I've seen that reminds me of how it how it actally used to be...

  • steam is better than diesel or eletric .

what were they thinking when they scraped the steam engines it takes like 20 years to build one of those diesels take about 5 months

  • 77mph, according to those in the know!

  • OMFG THAT WAS AMAZING!!! was it about 100mph?

  • No, it was 75mph, which is the speed limit for steam engines.

  • Ha Ha yeah 75mph is the limit for steam these days but I know of one driver of being a bit naughty! tut tut! :)

  • Was that a whistle or a cat being hung and electrified..

  • 25mph seems fast when your on the footplate so imagine being on the footplate doing speeds like that :-)

  • Serious 'kettle' thrash!!

  • I still think this is the most evocative video you have done.. shut your eyes and listen to it.. it sounds like something from a 1930's movie just as you've witnessed a long soppy goodbye on the platform between two lovers..fantastio stuff!

  • ah, Brief Encounter ! David Lean enjoyed employing steam trains - and blowing them up! I've seen better moments - 45407 lifting itself out of Falmouth Harbour station - but my battery ran out ! - and 'Nelson at Night' was surreal...it's definitely an addiction - a good fix goes a long way these days !

  • My favourite steam video. Great to hear the train going over jointed rail.

  • What do you mean by that?

  • Oh yes...would that be the Churchward who nicked the French and Americans ideas?

  • my God .............. that is amazing...

  • wow....that was fast

  • He was haulin' ass!!!

They may be more high maintenince, but steam will always have that little extra bit of nostalgia...

  • steam will always have that extra bit of awesomeness to it.

  • You never heard of Oliver Bulleid son?

  • ok thanks for the info

  • What is the speed of this train in km/h?

  • divide by 5 multiply by 8

    so 123.2 kmh

  • Reckon he's doing a bit more than 75mph there, lol, more like 85 :D

  • jak dla mnie wypas, szczególnie stukot kół na złączach szyn.super film

  • Highball'in RIGHT INTO YOUR FACE! Love it!!!

  • bloody awesome, btw wot class of loco is it is it a britania

  • no its a BR Standard 5

  • wow what a haunting sound those steam trains make

  • brilliant ... totally captures the magic

  • Holy Crap! AWESOME!!!

  • I'm gonna say it again... AWESOME!

  • peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep

  • Highly impressive!!!!!

  • Outstanding video!

  • Made my day! Thank you for sharing this.

  • Logged from on board at 77mph - just about to cross the Anton river.

  • Wonderful. This is what preservation is all about!

  • 5MT?

  • yea that is a Standard Class 5 (5MT) 4-6-0.

  • i agree! modern i thought was better but here goes, IM CONVERTED! steam always!

  • absoulutly brilliant who needs virgn voyagers and that crap

  • Awesome; totally blown away by the speed and sound! Shame 73096 has no current mainline work though. Keep it up!

  • i remember my 2 kids who are only 4 both crying it scared them that much !!!!

  • Fantastic- THAT is why I love steam
