  • The wall of sound is icredible! They sound like an orchestra on their own. Great work!!!

  • Is this Toscanini arrangment? I'm very interested to perform it, if anyone know where to find it please let me know.

  • 2:22 haha

  • I have fond memories of performing this at Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music on 2nd viola as taught by Robbie Merfeld, the summer of 1978.

Bravo! Well performed and gloriously executed!

  • @Adamrsweet im going to apple hill july 1-10 and i am playing this piece .. second violin, i can not wait since its such a great work

  • this is amazing.

  • Fenomenalno! Stefan besprekoran kao uvek, Mendelson - neprevaziđen!

  • bassist is extraordinary!

  • What a superb performance and recording. Five stars! Thank you for posting.

  • ahahahhahahahahahahha i love how the cellist looks threatening to anyone who makes a mistake hahaha <3

  • These are some of the best performers I've seen. The meaning of "performing" a piece is something many musicians don't quite grasp, but THIS ensemble knows how to perform! I'm learning Mendelssohn's Octet myself and I'm watching these videos several times past what I normally would for a piece simply because watching these guys perform is such a treat.

  • Haha! Interesting setup. It took me a while to realize that they had three violins on one side and one violin and two violas on the other. For a second, I was like "why are there three violas!!" I like it though, as well as the bass. Next time I perform this maybe I'll try both! Amazing performance.

  • @Musiclver27 You're mistaken. On the left, it's violin-violin-viola, and it's the same on the right.

  • @davehshs yeah i realized that when i watched the last movement, with the fugue. thanks for pointing it out though :)

  • @Musiclver27

    I think their setup is:

    Left: Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola 1, Cello 1

Right: Violin 3, Violin 4, Viola 2, Cello 2 (Double Bass)

  • I love this recording with the double bass. Now I'm bored by the recording I have played by the standard octet. Actually, I never cared a lot for it, anyway. The double bass truly does add a dimension that was lacking with two cellos.

  • it's soooooo clean!!!! good job people!

  • Let's not show the violists playing their gorgeous solos when it's their turn.. that seems fair.. haha, this was actually done very beautifully and it was all the more intriguing having the base player there, really impressive!

  • works really well with the double bass

  • This is breathtaking, does it exist on CD?

  • This is a spectacular performance. The ensemble was as much a joy to listen to as to watch!

  • The use of Double bass really helps with the clarity on the low end and opens up the voicing of the entire ensemble. Marvelous performance!

  • Fabulous. I had never seen a cello part in this piece played by the double bass.
