I think it was love; he knew the risk and did act jealous about Dereham and if it was just sex, why bother asking her 'how well' she knew Francis? Why bother except to pork her during their next assignation?
A lot of lovers died for fake love and they felt themselves as martyrs,I don't find it neither heroic nor romantic. If the love is true love,it is worthy, but if we check back how many those kinds of Love were real and true and worthy,I could only say that many of them were in illusion, delusion, deceived and deceiving.----my final definition to the Queen and her poor lover:Catherine Howard and Thomas Culpepper
I didn't like the Culpepper portrayed in the Tudors- he was cruel, vain and mean. I had no pity for him when he met his fate, and I did pity Catherine as she was just young and naive!
Poor silly Katherine. Her one, true fault was the fact that she didn't know any better. When she married Henry, she was really little more than a child, younger than Mary. She could not read or write or only very little of both. She had no idea what she was getting herself into and by that stage Henry was huge and grotesque and old enough to be her father. Culpepper was an appealing temptation for her. She was a silly girl who was thrown into the frying pan for simply the gain of her family.
There is no evidence of Katherine saying that before she was beheaded, but she did write the letter to Thomas and the original letter can still be seen today.
Katherine was just a girl who thought the whole business of being queen was a game and didn't realize how dangerous it really was. There is no doubt that she did love Thomas though.
@bh5496 -I think it might have been lust and seeking power on his part. It's hard to tell.Culpepper was smart and would have known the outcome if he was caught with Katherine,so maybe he was in love with her.
Interesting song choice - I remember it from the season 1 finale and Wolsey's suicide/that messed up play mocking him. Very good song, and I like your use of it here.
I think I would have liked Thomas Culpepper if they hadn't made him look like a villain. The scene where he raped the woman and stuff. I don't know why the writers put that in. I guess to show he's bad news and sinister.
@mmmmmvodka that did happen though..with the woman. although, I've read somewhere that it may have been his brother or something that did it...can't remember aahh!
@mmmmmvodka Yeah, I think that actually happened, raped the woman and murdered her husband. However he was so favoured by Henry that he was pardoned. But I know what you're saying, he does look slightly villainous, especially with that haircut haha!
Anywho, love The Tudors...so matter how "prettied up" the cast was, it was still a good show. <3
@mmmmmvodka No, it almost certainly really happened. I haven't seen this series: didnt the writers include Catherine's first amour, Francis Dereham? He, poor boy, never had sex with the girl after she was Queen, but he was in her household so he got taken up with Culpeper, but whereas Culpeper was spared being hanged, drawn and quartered as he was gentry, Francis suffered the whole thing.
@littleniyah Not really, because the King favored Culpepper was why Culpepper was spared the traitor's death, unlike Francis Dereham. Besides that reason, the King felt that Francis spoiled it for him because Dereham was the first one to have relations with Katherine Howard and took her virginity.
that gurl was too young to be there. to much full of life.he should have never married her in the first place.i commend her for at the end she stood up and said how she really felt.why not ur gonna die anyway.she did wat ann did'nt do wat ann should have done.if the accounts were tru.
I agree. Henry was a bastard, and it was ridiculous for these innocent women to be describing him in flattering terms to the crowds as they awaited their unjustified executions at his command. It made them look like pathetic tools. I would have stood up and told the crowd exactly what I thought of the bastard and my unjust execution! They had nothing to lose if they spoke their mind, and I think it would have made them historically stronger.
It seems ridiculous to us now - in the 21stC - but things were a lot different in the 1500s. Religion governed all aspects of life, feminism didn't exist, and ppl were expected to behave according to the tight societal norms of the day. Few ppl dared to stick out as individuals. A person also knew that speaking negatively about the King brought consequences for family as well as him. Would u say exactly what u thought of the King if doing so would endanger your family?

In reality, katherine was executed first, as befitting her station as queen. And it was all cleaned up before Lady Rochford was even brought to the scaffold.
@artgeek626 no in this scene culpepper says "chatherine is a little firework" and one of the other mans says "too HOT for you, mr culpepper" it only sounds like too old !! :)
No, he (Culpepper) said she was a 'little fireball.' As for him, for all his raping, murdering tendencies, he really did love Katherine enough to die. He could have cleverly denied it and called her a lying slut and him an innocent victim of a whore's lies (something Henry would have immediately understood in his twisted mind and past experiences with women) and lived in greater favor than ever. Pity Kathering didn't have Culpepper kill Dickweed Dereham and Joan.
@TheNuharoo Um, he did call her all of that. I don't really think it's love at all between them. He was thinking with his dick, she didn't have much of a brain to begin with. No sympathy for Culpepper--he deserved what he got for raping the peasant woman and murdering her husband.
i'm glad that thomas got beheaded, because he was portrayed as a jerk.
he was the reason a 17 year old queen got senteced to death, no matter how much of a skank she was. and then, he had sex with some other girl, after Katherine loved him.
what is needed is an oscar for this talented beautiful young lady and i predict one day she will get one it was the best acting ever when shes on screen you cant take your eyes of her the tudours is awesome but she is the cherry on the cake enough to turn a gay man straight totol thumbs up and a must see
@Gardionian which, by chance, is historically inaccurate. She did like every other person on the executioners block, saying how great a king he was and all of that but I must admit, that line was pretty awesome. To bad it wasn't real.
@LadyRaynesleigh91 actually, no-one knows what poor little Catherine said. It was Anne that had a dignified speech prepared, saying how well Henry had treated her. Catherine seems to have been so insignificant that she just came and went and was forgotten. Henry was the one that got the sympathy, not a teenage girl with no more brains than a sparrow.
@nodinitiative Well, not getting beheaded of course. But I have seen a couple girls I had crushes on go out with guys who were total losers and it end's up ruining them.
@nodinitiative Well in the TV show, yes. But in real life, there is alot of evidence that Thomas was harassing her & she complied out of fear. Poor child....
@Movieslurge2 same thing...I do feel sorry for modern day women/girls also, a majority of them always manage to fall in love with reckless people who have 'confidence'.
@NixieWinters Google "Katherine Howard Controversies" ( it should have a picture of Henry and all the wives and is titled :Historical Controversies
about Katherine Howard) discusses its possibility, and also defends her against the "whore" title she has been given. I suggest you read it all. I, obviously, wasn't there, but there is evidence pointing towards every option. :) But in the show, and POSSIBLY in real life, I still ship them. I'm sick. :(
Tamzin Merchant is the first of the actresses to play Henry's wives that EVERYONE seems to approve of so far. I work in a book shop and history fans often talk about this series, saying that they liked or disliked Anne Boleyn or Jane Seymour in the show .. but everyone seems to agree that Tamzin's portrayal of katherine is absolutely perfect. She really captures her childlike silliness and innocence. Its heartbreaking
@rees276 I think the only reason everyone approves of her is because she's probably the most uninteresting of the queens that no one really bothers with her. Whoever plays her needs only to be pretty and dumb--not too hard I gather.
henry VIII was na ugly bastard..its no surprise his wife found a more sutiable lover...and what is worse is that Hnery VIII executed many people, did nothing for his country but break away from the church and sat around feasting like a pig all his life.
Strange....Culpepper was actually a horrible guy (murderer and rapist) and I still think it's sad he died. But yeah...he is magnetic indeed :) He has such amazing cat eyes.
@cassyroxursox The letter prooves how much she was in love. Concerning Culppepper, i really don't know.In one sens, i was sure he was ambitious and only wanted the favor of the queen, like jewels, moneys....etc. But in the other sens, i don't think he should have kept "the letter" if he really didn't care of her. To keep that letter was a great great risk. certainely culppepper should burned it if he was not in love. For an historian, this is sometimes with some little details he finds the truth.
kathrin's letter was more long. It was the only proove of their "suppposing" adultary. Culppepper was tortured. It wasn't a proove for me. You said what they wanted to heard, cause tortures was terribles!so terrible!. Noone of historians could say without any doubt they fuck each other. I suppose yes, because of the letter and witnesses of ladies. Concerning Dereham, they were just children who had played some lovely games! Fuck you henri! i'm happy kathrin fucks him so well!
Very esthetic image in that serie. Specially with Boleyn and Howard. Some scenes are very beautiful with a splendid music each time ....Like the 2 comedians:Natalie Dormer and Tamzin Merchant. the both have been revealed to public with their great prestations in the Tudors. I wish for them a great carrier. The both deserve it. So, Congratulations to michael Hirst for all that. I've appreciated james Frain too! (Cromwell). he's fantastic. I was sad when he died.
I think it was love; he knew the risk and did act jealous about Dereham and if it was just sex, why bother asking her 'how well' she knew Francis? Why bother except to pork her during their next assignation?

No, they WERE NOT executed. Instead, the Spanish king was
so impressed that he ended up employing my ancestor in
the military, where his staggering bravery and bold strategic
planning helped to push the Moors out of Spain and win
two major victories. After that, my family was amply rewarded
for their services to the crown, which continued up til my family

henry VIII was na ugly bastard..its no surprise his wife found a more sutiable lover...and what is worse is that Hnery VIII executed many people, did nothing for his country but break away from the church and sat around feasting like a pig all his life.

She shouldn't have even married Henry! Just another divorce and execution! Culpepper has such pretty eyes :)

Kathryn Howard shouldn't have betrothed Henry, when her real true love was Thomas Culpepper....

@ccolimon He is :-). Nonetheless, if Henry VIII looked like JRM, I don't think he would have had to worry about Catherine cheating on him ;-).
