Poor silly Katherine. Her one, true fault was the fact that she didn't know any better. When she married Henry, she was really little more than a child, younger than Mary. She could not read or write or only very little of both. She had no idea what she was getting herself into and by that stage Henry was huge and grotesque and old enough to be her father. Culpepper was an appealing temptation for her. She was a silly girl who was thrown into the frying pan for simply the gain of her family.

He, poor boy, never had sex with the girl after she was Queen, but he was in her household so he got taken up with Culpeper, but whereas Culpeper was spared being hanged, drawn and quartered as he was gentry, Francis suffered the whole thing.

I agree. Henry was a bastard, and it was ridiculous for these innocent women to be describing him in flattering terms to the crowds as they awaited their unjustified executions at his command. It made them look like pathetic tools. I would have stood up and told the crowd exactly what I thought of the bastard and my unjust execution! They had nothing to lose if they spoke their mind, and I think it would have made them historically stronger.

It seems ridiculous to us now - in the 21stC - but things were a lot different in the 1500s. Religion governed all aspects of life, feminism didn't exist, and ppl were expected to behave according to the tight societal norms of the day. Few ppl dared to stick out as individuals. Tamzin Merchant is the first of the actresses to play Henry's wives that EVERYONE seems to approve of so far. I work in a book shop and history fans often talk about this series, saying that they liked or disliked Anne Boleyn or Jane Seymour in the show .. but everyone seems to agree that Tamzin's portrayal of katherine is absolutely perfect. She really captures her childlike silliness and innocence. Its heartbreaking
