  • how do his just lay straight down ? cuz mine look almost exactly like his, & i tie em back in a hairband, but i want them to lay like his . any tipsss?

  • @thedarnelln

    dont tie them then?

  • what size is that needle?

  • This guy looks like the lead singer of Live! LOLOLOL

  • Hey man, how r u doing?

    You're really good with dreads!

What do you recommend to maintenance the dreads.. once a month, once in 6weeks or something or is that to much.. like it will damage the hairs?

    Big Up!

  • i dont understand im a kid from jamaica inport 2 norway i been adopted but my dreds are very thick muchts thicker than his dreds how is that possebel ??????

  • Does dreadlocks put strain on your roots. (both during the process of dreading and otherwise on a day to day basis)? Does it tug at the roots, or speed up the balding process in anyway? Your advice would be much appreciated?

  • Hi i was considering this method of locking my hair, as my hair is quite fine and soft. I used to tightly braid my hair frequently about six years ago, then cut my hair. I grew my hair again recently but it is shedding EXCESSIVELY. I know upto 100 hairs daily is normal, however I shed HEAPS more. My hair used to be thick, and now it seems really fine. More importantly, my follicles are extremely WEAK, AND PAINFUL. My crown and front hairline is sore as if it is being pulled even though it isnt

  • Peace can I get some response on the hooks. Or r u out. Leave as I came. Peace

  • I'm a member at dreadlocksite which is very anti-crochet. My vid was posted as an example of what not to do. I used this method. I'm wondering what you have to say about the argument that crocheting damages your hair, makes them weak, too high maintenance, etc.

  • The crochet hook method damages hair if the person does it too much or too hard.

The hook method is a lot of work but it is worth it if you like the style and the end result.

My wife has had her locs for over 5 years and we have only used this method, her hair is stronger than before she had locs and it seems to grow faster and healthier.

So my argument is that most people who don’t like the crochet hook method have either never tried it or do it too much or too fast.

  • @TheInditribe hey, neutral party in this arguement but i havent tried this method yet but am goin to for my roots. my hair is pin straight and ive back combed mine, worked pretty well, my hair has been dried out from salt water and i found some of mine were breaking alittle from it so just tip might help both of u if u didnt kno use TEA TREE OIL!!!! it help keep mine from getting dry and its also known for killing bacteria, helps prevent/ get rid of mildew which can form.

  • @jerseyRJ Yea, you're right. I switched from peppermint soap to tea tree soap a couple of months ago and it works incredibly well especially for my oily scalp.

  • where are you located? i cant find anywhere nearby to get dreads. im in dalton georgia. do u kno anywhere around here that will do it?

  • @rtworley69 Im in tallahasse fl and got mine done here just like this.

  • @blaxbently i guess i can assume u dont kno anybody in dalton georgia who can do this. huh?

  • where are you from? i really want to get my hair done but i want it to be legit

  • nice work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • That's cool I've been trying to use the hook an seems to work, I just have a little bit of dandruff, idk how to remove it? Any ideas??

  • @1nqual many beauty supply stores will have them because they are used for weaves as well. they may also be called latch hooks in the store.

  • i suck at this. net videos seem useful but so hard

  • it's a little more complicated than it seems...

  • I have a few that I can send out to people for a small fee. message me if you are interested.

  • When you have to wash your hair do you have to undread your hair?

  • If i do this every time i have loose hair it will be bad for my hair or not?>

  • These style of dreads always has a few loose hairs, so dont worry about trying to make them perfect.

I suggest using the hook every time there is a problem, or when there are too many loose hairs. As long as you do not rip at the loc with the crochet hook or not do it too strong and aggressive, the crochet hook maintenance should be comparable to combing straight hair.

  • man i wish you lived in Memphis Tn. I really need some help with the crochet here everybory use twisting method but no one wants to work with straight hair memphis suck lol...

  • Have you seen this boy recently? I'd be interested in seeing how his dreads are doing, nearly a year later.

  • Damn Andre Agassi is making people's dreads now, so much cooler since he left Brooke!

  • How often do you have to maintain locks in this style, and how often do you recomend washing ??

  • Washing and maintenance are both to be done as needed for your specific dread's needs. My Wife's dread loc situation is washing every week or two, and maintenance about every 3 weeks.

  • @skillteacher Thanks man, info much appriciated, where do you get the crochet hok needles from and what size would you say was the best

  • Im sending a set of 3 hooks at different sizes out to people for a small fee. If you are interested send me a personal message. My favorite size when I first started was .75mm, now that I am better at using the crochet hook, I like the .6mm.

  • i have had mine for 8 years people tell you to shave them but i just trim the ends and dread them back im never gonna shave mine

  • for the base, you can hold the base between two fingers and rub it clockwise

  • ... that's a classroom

  • ok thanks

  • can you use a normal needle

  • a small crochet hook is the only thing that is used for this method.

  • would you be able to use conditioner??

  • where do you find crochet hooks that small? the smallest i could find in wallmart was a 5-pack of Boye ones and the smallest in the pack was 1.80mm. and because of how big it is, ive just been doing the method where you poke the needle through one side, wrap the loose hairs around the needle, and pull through the other side. but yeah, where can i find one that small?

  • I have several .6mm and .7mm tulip crochet hooks that I am sending out to people. If you are interested send me a personal message and I'll send you the info.

  • could i maintain them by backcombing every other day and re waxing or locking

  • best way is to try and see what works best for your locs. Start off with a little first, then move on to more maintenance if needed. My method uses only the crochet hook, no wax. But wax works for some people.

  • @skillteacher yes but i was told that wax will cause the dread to rot and start to stink is that true

and i was also told that using shampoo will also cause your locks to rot is this true

  • My wife has been using bar soap to wash her dreads for over 5 years and no rotting or stink. The soap really helps to get any smells out and it really helps the scalp to not dry out. The rot from shampoo would be if there is resadu deposits left on the loc or the locs are not fully washed and rinsed clean.

I think not washing locs would really make them smell bad and they would probably have grime, lint, and debris in them over time.

Wax? I only work with the crochet hook.

  • i like the size of those dreads, about how big were the pieces of hair that were dreaded together? like one square inch?

  • Probably a little bigger, like 1.5 to 2 inches square. Since his hair was thin he needed more of a base to form a nice dread.

  • will the frizz always be there or will they be gone after sum time?

  • People with naturally straight hair will usually have some frizz. Since every bodies hair is different their locs will be different too. Over time, the fizzy parts will lossen, then after several more times with maintenance there is little to no frizz. The key is to not overwork the dreads with the crochet hook. This method is the best for controlling locs. But do the maintenance no more than every few weeks. See how the hair responds and adjust.

  • Hi! So I got my friend to help me crochet the dreads, everything like you did in the first vid. But it's very messy and does this have anything to do with using a 1.25mm needle? Is it too big?

  • You could also try just not using conditioner, switching to a residue-free shampoo, and not brushing. Maintenance-free, too. Natural locks are THE way to go!

  • The patient??

  • wow, you're not even sticking the hook end in it. so all you do is poke the hair in? How!?

  • THANK YOU!!!

  • where can you buy this crochet hook

  • walmart. any big store really. but i got mine at walmart.

  • Thank you very much! You can't believe how much this has helped me.

  • those are some of the best dreadlocks ive ever seen man

  • hey i have a question for you...every time i wash my locks there always loops comin out and i keep crocheting but every time i wash again theres loops i hate dat its ugly how can i get rid of them???

  • @Habiba13 same with my locks i got my maintenance done and the guy actually grabbed the loose hair and chopped them off and he warned me not to use crochet needle

  • has not using the crochet hook worked for keeping your dreads maintained?

  • Can you make one last video, Cuz my dreads are long. and different then this kids. and Im doin this crap and i feel like im messin up my hair. i dont know what im doing wrong

  • Why you keep calling him a patient? hahaha

  • @supervirtuouswoman i find it funny too... client should sound better =)

  • What size needle are you using? The needle I have keeps getting stuck X-(

  • I like .6mm the best but .65mm and .7mm also work good.

  • @skillteacher I'M STARTING TO GROW MY HAIR OUT AGAIN, SHOULD I PUT ANY WAX IN MY HAIR 2 START LOCKING IT ? I'M USED TO GETTING MY HAIR BRAIDED

  • @poppoppillz I''ve never had any success with wax but a few people have commented on my other videos about using it. From what I've heard is that wax can be real difficult to get out of your dreads if you don't like it so I would suggest trying to get your dreads going with out it first. Then if you are really motivated to use wax, start with very little. My wife has had dreads for over 6 years and has never used wax. We use only the crochet hook to keep her dreads lookin sweet.

  • you should make another vid on how his dreads look now

  • great camera

  • man what state do u live i wanna pay u to fix my dreads, just got'em done 2 weeks ago and they kinda look rough. anyways i like the videos they really help out gotta go get me one of those nifty crochet needles lol. thanks

  • hey dude dont worry about how they look after 2 weeks. or i guess 4 now. the first month to two months my dreads looked shitty. but now they are bad ass. (6 months)

  • for the past months i have watch so many videos on how 2 dread this is the first useful video i watched 10q

  • omg i want dreads just liek that!!!!

  • I think im pretty lucky ive had my dreads for like 3-4 months and ive barely done anything to the roots and theres only like half an inch of non dreaded hair at the root and my dreads have grown like 2 and a half inches however some of the roots seem to be getting tangled together and attaching to each other what should i do? thank you

  • you or a friend will need to gather the hairs that belog to the respective dread and loc them in. I show how to do this in my new growth dread maintenance. If some hairs are already dreading into the wrong loc, then cut or pull those few hairs out. Every few months as your locs grow out, they will need some up keep. I have posted many videos on this subject. Check them out and if you have more questions, feel free to send me a message. Cheers

  • what size crochet needle are you using? i find this video very helpful! thanks

  • the smaller the better. I use a .65mm now but at least a 1.0mm will be ok.

    Good Luck!

  • i had my dreads for about 2 month all i did is twist them and now in the back of my head there started to lossen up

  • i got my dreads about 3 weeks ago, and ever since my 1st wash several of the dreads at the front and on the top started to loosen up, i have about 1-2 inches of normal hair before its then dreaded, i tried backcombing, and using a crochet hook to rebuild it but it doesnt seem to be working. how can i fix it?

  • It sounds like time is what you need. Do maintenance every few months to stabilize the dreads. This style of dread does take work to make them look nice and clean.

  • Why not just palm roll your hair?

  • Ive tried palm rolling and it does not seem to give any control to dread locking the hair. This is why we use the crochet hook method; the hook method gives a person total control of how the dread loc forms. Everybodys hair is different and will loc in its own way, some people have hair thats more responsive to palm rolling, but for people that want clean locs right away, the hook method can do it.

  • is this ok with a 1.00 mm crochet?

  • yes the 1 mm will be able to take care of your maintenance. It will make the loc a little bit looser compaired to a smaller hook. Use the 1 mm to take care of any problems you might have now, and keep a look out to find a smaller crochet hook to upgrade.

  • Yes, I just ordered my .75mm crochet hook. Been twisting my whole loc journey but looking forward to giving this crochet technique a try! I'm especially excited to see how it will manage my frizz!

  • yes but if you do it with a crochet hook and the lock gets tighter, but the hair grows out the scalp right! ,but does it mean i have to tighten my locks at the root EVERY TIME? or is it possible that the roots tighten themselves?

  • Yes, for most people you will have to tighten and maintain the dread every time there are loose hairs or the loc grows out, I suggest locking the roots every month or two. For most people, having dreads is a lot of work to make them look clean. Like you I thought dreads would be easy to have, but the reality is that there are only a few lucky people who don't seem to do anything to their locs to make them look great.

  • hey i got another question: i have caucassian hair and i see that the roots dont dread them selfes so my question is :how do i dread my roots and if i have to use a crochet hook ,do i have to do it like every month? and dont forget i have caucassian hair

  • The crochet hook can usually fix most dread problems including locking the roots. I've tried to do videos on most of the problems people might have with their dreads. Check out my dread maintenance with a pretty girl video to see how the roots of a dread can be locked. When locking your roots with the crochet hook, try to do it softer then the normal part of a dread because it can pull at your scalp more. Then after it grows out more, loc it tighter.

  • QUESTION: I've been growing mine since 2001 using the twisting with gel method and now i want to switch to a natural alternative. Is it possible to switch to this method for locking the newgrowth and will it work on African hair?

  • Yes, you should be able to transition well especially because you have African ancestors. Naturally kinky hair will be able to knot easer using this method. Try it, you should have quick and good results.

  • hey, nice dreads, how did you get those round tips?

  • I just posted a dread video on rounding tips. See if that helps.

It's called Rounding Dread Ends with Crochet Hook

  • what numer is the croche neddle?

  • I'm not sure of the American number, just check the size. The one I use is .7 mm but find the smallest crochet hook you can and that should work as you learn this technique.

  • Hey. I have pretty new dreadlocks, and there is some loose hairs. I've seen a video of how you get them inside their corresponding dreads, but when i do it, it just looks like my hair is braided - not cool. What should i do?

  • Keep practicing to see if you can thicken the loc up using the crochet hook. THis is don going into the loc at an angle and thicken the knots inside the loc. A thicker dread should look cooler.

  • how big did u do the sections?

  • I started out doing small sections at 4 cm circular diameter After the sides of his head were done he said that he wanted them thicker We then started to do sections at about 7 cm circular diameter. This worked out great for a clean head of dreads. My advice now is to section off the hair first in braids at the thickness you want then take each braid out and use the crochet hook to do one loc at a time Braiding will also help keep loose hairs out of the way while you work on making the dread

  • "so you don't hurt the patient" lol

  • Can you use the crochet needle to add extensions

  • Yes, the crochet hook can be used to add dread extensions.

Dread extensions are great for people who had to cut their locs and want to reaatch them or if someone wants long locs without the years of growth.

    1) The person's hair needs some locs to start

    2) Fray the ends of both tthe person's hair and the dread extension at least 2 inches for each

    3) Join the frayed ends together and use the crochet hook to form the locs and join

    4) Go in diagonally both directions to form more joining knots

  • Check out my GREAT learning to dread advice to see how to make the extension from store baught hair. Also in my series of Dreads with soft style from Thailand, has some demonstrations of the salon workers making dread extensions (I think the first video:-)

  • very nice... very detailed

  • hey man i was wondering if you had any advice on fixing dreads that have grown together?? my dreads are doin great need a lil maintnace on the loose hairs but my roots are all tangling.. wat can i do to untangle them??

  • My advice to disconect the new growth from a loc that's not its own:

    1) I pull the new growth out at the root so it is now part of a new loc and the new growth will grow into the loc it belongs to.(If there is not many)

    2) cut the hairs that do not belong (if there is a lot)

These methods both need maintenance after the loose hairs are disconected.

Note; the longer the loose hairs are, the easer they will be to maintain.

  • i did what you showed me at the root. to tighten up my roots, with the crochet needle. every time i take shower it comes undone. so how long should i wait before i can take a shower, or what am i doing it wrong. my hair is very curly by the way.

  • Well, if your root hairs are too short they may come undone from the knots from the shower. If they are long and still comming out then your knots in the dread are not tight enough. At the roots is a sensative place and should not be overworked. But if you want to keep those loose hairs in you will need to tighten that area for a longer time to create more knots and make that portion of the loc more dense.

Dreads may take more time to stabalize, until then you will have those loose hairs.

  • Skillteacher--- great video-- I started my locs 9 months ago with backcombing and have just started to clean them up with crochet.. It has done wonders and my tips are nice too. Is it possible that you could put an updated look at the student that you locked in this video? Would be great to see the progress and how they have stayed together. Once again great video-- if you're ever in Hong Kong let me know and we'll have a Tiger together!!

  • Finally a great way to do locks for Caucasian people, have you ever tried this method on a black person?

  • Yes and naturally kinky hair dreads even faster using this method.

  • I am about to do mine, and I was curious is there a way to make them thicker if not, How many does he have roughly so I can make less. Thanx.

  • Before you start locing, have someone braid your hair first with the thickness at the base you want and in a pattern that you want. This way you can probably get the thickness you want and it will be sectioned the way you want. Take one braid out at a time and loc it.

    He has about 35 locs.

  • shouldn't the new growth naturally lock up?

  • Unfortunatly not. This dread technique is the formation of thousands of knots into clean cylindars. When the base grows out, it has not formed many (if any knots). This style quickens the knoting process and thus a person can form the loc at the base as the loc grows out to get that clean look.

Some people are lucky and their hair seems to loc natuarlly. The people I deal with need help to get their locs clean, and this way will make clean locs without wax.

  • i have really thick hair and its pretty wavy too. i used this method on a few of my dreads that were falling apart and hoped it was the only time i would ever need to crochet them. if i stop using the crochet needle, is there a possibility that i could wake up one day with like 5 inches of undreaded hair at my roots?

  • Did this method help your dreads that were falling apart?

It sound like you have had dreads for a while. If your hair did not naturally loc up at the roots before, it probably won't in the future. Does your hair naturally loc up at the roots?

If your hair does not naturally loc up then Yes it is possible that if you do not maintain your locs they will grow out unlocked.

How did you first get your dreads to form?

  • i first got my dreads by backcombing about 2 months ago. i made the mistake of taking off all my rubberbands at the tips and roots and some of them started to fall apart, so i tried crocheting them and it worked great but i dont want to have to do it every month to my new growth. i started doing a little clockwise rubbing to encourage some new growth to lock up by itself

  • man thats alotta work. im glad im nappy n happy. all i do is twist my roots. but yal keep doin yal thing one luv

  • This is the first time I seen this method , I will have to try it and let you know how it turns out.

  • im usin ur method and its doin wonders for me. i appreciate it. i just wanna know HOW should i wash my dreadlocks..i dnt wanna mess em up. thanx again teach..jah bless

  • First you should focus on washing the scalp more than the locsThe scalp will usually get dry and need more care I suggest trying different bar soaps to see what works for youMy wife likes dial gold before, now we useDr Bronners baby mildWe've tried many other products and the 2 I mentioned worked for us We wash the scalp as much as twice a week and as little as every 2 months Wash your locs when they smell, at least every 2 months. Washing wont hurt them but it we make them need more maintaince

  • thanx teach..keep doin great videos.

  • hey man i finally got my dreads.I have alot of loose hairs in my dreads but every time i stab the need le in the dread it gets stuck and im scare i will snap alot of my hairs and im having a hard time any tips? Also i wanted to know when you stap it in the dread does the needle go all the way through and then beck out? thnx

  • Both methods are valid, out the other side and in the center. The needle goes all the way through the dread usually. Grab any loose hairs on the other side to pull back in. If the needle just goes in the center, make sure you do that diagonally so it makes the locs tighter and thicker. When pulling the needle out, curve the mothion in the same way as the hook so it releases the knots inside the loc. I'm posting some new dread videos today. Check em out for more insights.

  • This is absurd. I've had dreads for 2 years and they don't look this good. I've been using palm rolling, clockwise rubbing, etc. I'm trying this method immediately! Thanks for sharing.

  • You are dreadlock Jesus.

You really helped me with my dreads with your methods.

I'll be posting a video tomorrow, just about this new technique.

    -Matt.

  • Glad to help. This is why I made these videos, to help people dread their hair so that they have total control over their dreads. Too often the dreads control the people. With this method there is no crap that gets put in the hair either.

Blessings of peace and good will to you and your relations.

  • think you so much for these videos!! i backcombed and was going natural for three months and the loose hair and whispy tips were killin me and palm rolling everyday is a pain...so i jus got all mine done...wow it took me like 5 days to get them all done but they look completely different now and awesome...but i had one question...how often will i have to maintain with this method and how long should i wait to wash after freshly tightening them?

  • Maintainence is something that is always needed because there will always be at least one loose hair poking out somewhere. So do it as much as you feel is necessary; be warned not to do it in the same place as a bad habit or you might distroy that section. I suggest when your roots grow out, like every month or so. Wash your scalp every week or two and your locks every month or so. You should wash your scalp first then let it dry, then maintain it, because washing creates a lot of loose hairs.

  • can you unlock dreads

  • My students, that had one loc, could take their's out. They said they slowly undid the knots starting at the end. So it is possible when they are first done, but I think a full head of hair that has had locs for a while would have too many knots to take out. So my advice for getting locs out would be to let the hair grow out as much as possible at the roots then cut the knotted loc off. A good thing is that if you want locs again, the loc can be reattached. So don't throw the cut locs away!

  • can you over poke it?

  • Yes, if you pull to hard out of of the loc will rip the hair out. Practice on store baught hair to correct this if you are worried. Tips on this is in my GREAT dread advice video. Otherwise anytime loose hairs are sticking out they can be pulled back in.

  • please what for a scince do you take

    0.6?????0.7?????1.25?????please

  • The size of crochet hook I recomend are the .6mm and the .7mm

These hooks work very well for doing clean tight locs, the 1.25 mm is a little big so the locs will be looser. The smaller the hook usually the better.

  • agreed

  • wow his hair looks really good for one month!!!

  • yea, the benifits of the crochet hook method. Dread locs are instant and great looking.

  • how long does it take for you to maintain a whole head and how long did it take you to start the locks?

  • This was one of my math students that really wanted me to help him out. I did two or three locs a day, off and on, durring our lunch time for about a mounth and a half.

Starting the locs and maintaining depends on how thick, long, and how many there are. But it takes a long time because this is a continous process, like a journey that never ends.

  • what i needed!!! thanx a looot! :D

  • WONDERFUL!!! You are a good teacher. nice loc's. Thank You for the video, Stay Blessed.

  • thank you for this

  • Does that technique only work on that hair texture?

I dont see any videos with african americans using the poking technique to lock with the crochet needle. They only use the loop way or whatever they call it.

Im trying to lock and the root just keeps unraveling when I wash it. Twisting just isnt working for me.

  • African American hair will loc even faster using this method! When the hair is naturally kinky, it needs less help to form into locs. The crochet hook will assist in the making of locks, and make any loose hair put back into the loc. Locing is the formation of knots so twisting wont make real locs but make what I've heard called twists. Many African Americans believe locs and twists are the same. Find a small crochet hook and try to turn your twists into locs. Let me know how it works for you.

  • hey dude thanks a lot, it's always a pain in the *** to go to my dude who made my dreads, and tell him to maintain mine, but with those videos now i'm able to do it bymyself !

and also, you use the REAL technique to do it, no wax and shit like that !

    awesome !

  • dude you are amazing is there anything you can't do

  • Calculus based advanced physics is something I have a very hard time doing. With regards to skills, I practice every skill I can find to learn the basics. If I like the skill and the culture that goes with the skill Ill evolve and get even better at that skill and other like it. Over time I have found that all these different skills can be combined and built upon to create unique experience and products. Thanks for such a nice comment.

  • what size hook is used for this

  • I use .7mm. What I tell people is the smaller the hook the better. Just find the smallest crochet hook you can and try that. Bigger crochet hooks are not bad, just slower and harder to work with.

  • Thank you very much Sir for sharing your knowledge. i just made one of my dreads look very smart. This is a great video

  • do yo have to poke all he way through with the hook or just ligtly.... help please

  • There are 3 distances I poke with the hook. 1) Poke and stop inside the loc for repair, tighter, and thicker locks 2) poke through just a little bit on the other side for same as before but can catch some loose frizzy hairs also 3) poke way out to catch longer hairs and pull several back into the lock

Also experiment with the angle of poking in the crochet hook. At an angle can help repair locks and make them thicker also. Straight in is more for catching loose hairs.

  • thanks alot buddy

  • do u own a salon or work at one..

  • No place to lock me down, I'm a walking salon.

  • is like at a salon or somthin..

  • This needle or hook style is similar to what I've seen done in salons. This style gives a clean look so it is like a fashion style also.

  • hey greate vid man.

i'm looking forward to getting some soon!

i just wanted to know what style of dreads is that? i know theres different type of ways it could be done. I've seen alot of different dreads online, on youtube and other sites. I also have straight hair so i beleive its going to be hard for me to get them! If you could please get back at me i'd appreciate it alot!!! thanx!

  • The style? Well everybodys dreads are different. This style I learned in Thailand and if you wanted some other insights about this style check out my other videos. As for your straight hair, doing dreads this way is the only successful way I know about, but it does take continuous maintenance.

  • what size needle is that, like a c?

  • aye dat nedle work good ass shit an it easy to do thanx for da video dawg

  • where do u get crochet thingys? the dreads r dope

  • Any place that sells sewing items.

  • Hey dude, i'v made my dreads last week, and i'm a little councerned, because evrytime I wash my dreads, i have to do the Maintenance. It has like ... 50 cm... So it takes a lot of time to do it, and i would like to know if its gonna keep going like this... I wash my dreads 2 times/week. Thx man. Great tutorials.
