Oh, and one last thing. Anybody who knows the difference between 425 horse at the crank and 425 horse at the -wheels- can tell you how hard it can be to control on the road. A man I knew with a 350 Frankenstein motor was getting around 427 with open heads...crashed and screwed himself up bad because he had it in a 1980 Malibu. He put it in a 66 Panelvan to keep it from "hopping"...wish I'd had the 2500 to buy it 10 years ago, but it only got around 7mpg AVERAGE in the Malibu.
One of the sad parts...a lot of people don't know that car companies went back to gross ratings. Sure, it's easier to get power now with electronic fuel injection, efficient transmissions, cranks/cams/rods/whatnot...but if you believe for a minute that the ratings are 100% net you're mistaken. The 250 horse 3.5 2010 Challenger puts about 175 to the rear wheels, but nowhere near the ungodly torque of an old V8 like the 500, much less a Bentley 6.75 Turbo.
It's called SAE net. In 1970 this car made 400 horsepower by BHP(Gross) settings. 73 or 74 tops is when -everybody- started going by SAE Net, otherwise the power to the back wheels once you add all the shit to it and run it through the transmission. The infamous 454 LS6 probably puts around 280 to the wheels, probably less with an automatic TH400 like is in this monster. It's a whole new ballgame when you start putting air conditioning, Power Steering, and other stuff on.
After reading all theses comments, I honestly just want to see the car! I love the early 70's everyone else can get caught up on friggin japanese cars and 0 to 60 times or even stupid beyonce songs! You should stick to videos that are relevant to your comment!
@mrgingles Ever heard about torque? And this is 1972 for fuck sake, before you were born. Its good enough for that time engineering, they were underrated in HP rating due to insurance companies asking to pay too much. In 1970 GM made 500hp 454 engine for the Chevelle, the engineering was good but in early 70's oil crisis and insurance companies made the HP to go down quick.
You're 10 years older than me(according to your youtube info) and still throw such a dumb comments
@mrgingles These were the early days of emissions controls, but before widespread use of on-board computers. In other words the engineers did the best they could with what they had available. Foreign cars weren't exempt. They had to meet the same standards to be legally sold to the public. All in the name of clean air for you and your children to breathe. American engineering? You better be glad for it, IDIOT!!! I'm pissed at those who criticize American knowhow. You're free to leave!!
@mrgingles I'm guessing you're one of those knuckleheads who falls for the bullshit that jap products are somehow better. Is that the reason they "engineer" a floormat that causes people to be badly hurt or KILLED because of it. If it weren't for American support, read dollars, there would BE NO jap industry, except that which raises soy beans and rice!Toyota has NEVER apologized or offered compensation for the victims and familes of these horrible tragedies. They can suck my ass!!!
The reasons there are "only" 200 hp is because the Federal government instituted some new net HP ratings and emasculated the high-compression ratios in engines that the American auto industry had successfully marketed to the people until 1970.
Please see CAFE for further Goverment misadventures.
Can you please get the fat, fucked Federal government out of the marketplace?
I'm not sure that the one in the video is the best current example of the car. I own a 72 DeVille which is the first year for the (Lower Compression) low-lead/no lead version made by Cadillac and I'm glad because even though it's no lead it still requires 91 octane to run well which is high/ premium in most places. The owner of this video is clearly misinformed about the HP and the weight of his Ride.
so if u wanted a fast luxury classic why didnt you get a coupe deville from 2 or 3 years earlier. in 1970 they started with emissions and stuff witch killed hp and tq. my 1968 coupe deville has 375hp and 525tq at the wheels and it hauls pretty dang good for a luxury classic. ima start slapping on some bolt ons and see if i can get it over 600tq. enjoy ur cruiser
@Agaminmon Lol i know man im just given him a hard time. I drive a 73 Lincoln Continental, and it has a huge gas tank that breaks the bank every time I fill it up. I figured this was about the same lol
@worldofwilfred Uh..nope - Cadillac made it's own engines to include a 500. No resemblance to a Chevy big block at all. They made a 472 and a 500 both of which churn out a massive amount of torque. Sure the horsepower may seem a bit low but there is no denying the torque numbers. They changed the horsepower rating systems around 72' so everything dropped.
@Gibson299 peak HP was low because the engines were basically choked due to emission standards back then, they still made a ton of low end torque however and they feel much more powerful than those numbers would suggest. you can easily more than double the HP with a few minors tweaks done to the car, a free flowing exhaust to allow the engine to breathe freely has you with 400+HP real easy !
fast car considering the hefty weight! Smooth engines too. Loved my 72 DeVille. I also used to have a 1972 Buick Electra with the 455 and it would smoke the tires, the 71 was even more powerful.
@hetisover It was the 70s. They had to stop polluting but the technology to get more power from engines cleanly was too expensive. 200hp was pretty much your limit, but bigger engines did still make more torque for smoother driving.
jesus 200hp from a 8.2L in a 5500lb car, expect it to be fast?
hell no ur quiet lucky to of made it to 60 in that time zone lol, oh the gas being burned lol, even for 72 thats horrible for a v8 to output, and it's 8.2L? like howly crap! they really wanted them cadillac's to float LOL bet the gas lasts 3 days 20 gallon tank lol
@Gibson299 Horsepower WAY different than torque. I have a 7.4L in my 76 Suburban. A bit under 300hp, but it can tear up the tires along with towing down a building. BTW, my car weighs 7500lbs. Says it right on the door tag. Personally, I love torque alot more than horsepower. Sure is more useful.
@Gibson299 72 Caddy 500's were rated at 235hp and 385 lbs torque. A 72 Camaro with a 402 made 240hp. Does this mean a 72 Cadillac can keep up with a 72 Camaro? Hell the way you think, that 72 Camaro with the 402 must be a real dog since it only has 240hp.
@dstarks80 Let's be honest man most people today unless you have driven these cars have NO IDEA what 385 lbs torque is or how it works.I for one would love to drive the" little 240hp" Camaro :) But I also drive a 72 Deville
@Danship2007 It's sad how these guys think horsepower is everything. They don't realize the average semi truck has 400-450hp from a huge turbo diesel but they make 1300-1600 lbs of torque so they can weigh up to 80,000lbs and still cruise the hwy at 80+mph and the engine last up to a million miles. I doubt a 400hp chevy or ford V8 could do that. that caddy 500 has peak power and torque at around 3500rpm. most engines today have to be redlined do that.
@dstarks80 umm...no a chevy or ford v8 won't put out 1600 lb ft of torque and last a million miles. Most passenger vehicles won't. Actually, none will. But you can easily tune a duramax diesel to put out 1000~1200 lb ft of torque.
you can easily get over 350 in that car. the headers and all the exhaust and intake is the most restrictive thing ive ever seen. a 2in exhaust on a engine with that displacement is way to small and if u took off all the emissions crap it would help a lot too. if u did intake manifold, 4 barrelcarb, headers that end in 3in and kept it a true dual all the way back in 3in and did a simple port polish on your heads you would be over 400 hp
Its about 270hp, its not quite that heavy. Kinda wanted to hear it not beyonce, any chance of putting in another $20 worth of gas to do a 0-60. Lmao, I do love these old eldos, awesome cars!

Nice cruiser, comes from a time when large engine size
was a form of luxury option to go with yur 2 ton body.
beautiful acceleration and sound for a great old land yacht!
feed her royal purple or equivalent n she shud luv u up with oily
buttered cylinders for years to come. best thing about old huge motors
that werent geared for high rice RPM is THEY LAST because the force is
shplayed over 8 enourmous cylinders instead of 4 at 9 grand RPM.
