We have a black walnut tree in our yard in Va and playing dodge the walnut was a very popular game around that thing, fun but painful at times game lol
The other one definitely looks like a Carya ovata or Shagbark Hickory.
Be careful with the Black Walnuts, as once they turn dark brown and mushy they develop a kind of indelible ink that will stick with you for WEEKS. Also make sure your home has no squirrel access cuz they horde them in LARGE piles.
If you like, check out my "mini series" (it's not a mini series, just sounds good... laff) "Black Walnut N Squirrels" to see just how many ONE squirrel can stash and it's STILL early season!
Thank you for the information!! We sure have plenty here. Those black walnuts sell for 14 dollars a LB here. I saw your squirrel piles in your shed. Can't believe they gave you two garbage cans full!! They are some busy squirrels!!
14 bucks a pound??? Here I am trying to figure out creative ways of getting RID of these darn things!! LoL
Believe it or not, all those nuts were from a single squirrel living in that shed.. correction... that USED to live in that shed... he got his walking papers and hasn't been back since!
I plugged the holes and removed the ceiling (where I found it's nest and ... yes... MORE freekin nuts) LoL
Thank you Roland for sharing this with me. I never knew they were those kinds of nuts. Now I know and I will be harvesting them. I have some of those trees near me.

I am pretty sure you are right about what kind of nuts you have falling on the ground. i am sure that other nut is a wild hickory nut.
