I really dislike jazz ballads. But Watrous can do ballads. Along with everything else. His playing is off but is nice and very musical. Well we're all getting older I guess. The arrangement is quite good. Dunno about the "busy" saxophonist. Seems like he should settle down a bit.
Ilovebigband, dude, thanks for these videos...any chance you have one of "Spain" with the Manhattan Wildlife Refuge? I can't even find Watrous with the MWR on Itunes to purchase...I played trombone from 4th-early college in all types of school bands...I remember my private lesson teacher giving me some Watrous to listen to...Thanks for the memories!
Hey, I was in a Louisiana high school when Watrous gave a workshop and concert with the school stage band there in 1978. Incredible! One of the charts was Fourth Floor Walkup, you know, where Bill takes this crazy cadenza and drops jaws in the audience.
Years later, at a Pizza Express concert in London, I asked Bill why they never played the chart anymore and he said it was destroyed in a fire. I find it hard to believe that he didn't transcribe and revive. Anyone have any details on this?!
I've discovered today that Mr.Watrous was really human because I had doubts. I saw him play in 1977 in Montreal when I was a young bone player. It changed my life. What I heard that night has followed and inspired me all my life. I have never heard such beautiful music since then and don't think I ever will.
This was on his Japan tour, in which they had him play at a new venue, work late and then travel early every day nonstop for 2 weeks. He was most likely exhausted, but I think his tone here was as beautiful as always.
I found this clip quite worrying. Bill's tone and accuracy sound really off by his usually very high standards. He had some ill health around this time didn't he?
nah, ive had friends that heard him live recently, he was never playing on this kind of magnitude back in the 70s. Hes the most MUSICAL hes ever been, im not talking about chops, chops Bill will always be better than everyone even on a bad day so... yeah not counting that, the major thing thats different about Bill now than from 1970 is that he has the Freakish Chops thing going but with great musicality and such tastiness, whereas he was ALL chops in the 70s.
I have the MWF album Bill does this on. This was one of the few Watrous tunes I could actually keep up with him when I tried to play along. It was a good song to check my usable range. Nice to hear him still hit that high Ab.
I listened to him a lot in the 70's, and saw him live......Outstanding!!!

Whomever said he wasn't playing like this in the 70s is full of it. I have a recording of 4th floor walkup from then, and OMG, was it spectacular.

Damn, you don’t see one slight difference in his face or body when he’s playing high or low. Incredible.

I kinda liked the sax. It gave a fluttery kinda feel.

If you are implying that Bill Watrous' sense of phrasing is off because "he's getting old" your a fool.

Great- he knows how to make a trombone sing. His slurs are right on and accidentals are underestated. The sax player has tone and spontaniety too.

I believe he is 65 in this video. Let's all hope we play this well when we are his age.
