It was set in Ukraine, my mother is from Odesa and i have been in Lvov (station where they met Jonathan :)) and I recognized many places, so it is definitely Ukraine, maybe some field parts were set somewhere else...

I was born in Odessa, Ukraine (those beautiful golden cupolas you see in the video are just by the Black Sea) and my family is Jewish.My relatives were able to flee east.Trachimbrod (Трaчимброд) was a местечко (shtetl) in western Ukraine where these atrocities occurred all the time close to the Polish border, and some antisemitic western Ukrainians also collaborated with the Nazis b/c of communist opposition. My grandfather's aunt and infant were among those killed at the mass grave of Babi Yar.

the book responds to the title quite differently; it is about the night when brod loses her virginity, not about how your past is illuminated. i just found it quite awkward in the movie, but it's inevitable i guess. i liked the movie in a different way.

I know it's an adaptation, and thus it'll be different, but I still don't like that they changed Jonathan from a writer to a collector. (also the cutting out of ALL of Jonathan's writing scenes, because of that change) If I'd never read the book I might've liked the movie more, and I did enjoy it, but not as much as I could have.

I've only just come across this film but I can tell from this clip that this is a very beautifully crafted film, the manner in which the German soldiers were setup in that shot spoke volumes of a director with a spot on attention for detail, it sent a chill down my spine, nice combination of contemporary and past, look forward to watching the film in full. I like movies where the past retains a presence, best stories, the use of the song 'How it Ends' is perfect.

I love this trailer, The quirkiness of it is captured in his glasses & in the wall. It reminds me of Elizabethtown, World's Best Dad, Little Miss Sunshine(beautiful film) also the song that they use in this trailer is the one used for LMS. :D My kind of movie. Humor, found most poignant in what truly matters. The kind that makes you cry.
