The opening credit was in French and it talks about "Haiduc" which is more like a freedom fighter and should by no means be confused with gypsies. This music is nice nevertheless, but "haiduc" stands for freedom fighter, honour, equality, and much more, none of which is a value in the gypsy culture unfortunatelly :(.
More like the popular ideal of a better life. The haidouk robbed the obscenely wealthy and shared the loot with the poor. A mythical figure who restored order in the world. It's only normal he was praised in folk songs.
They have dialects, depends the region from they came... in romania they are split in clans as caldarari, lingurari, spoitori etc and they lenguage are diferent but as i know they could understand each other.

Correct...sort of... we don't know if it comes from Hungarian or Turkish. see the wikipedia entry for hajduk. It evolved from the Transylvanian Verbunc and Haidău dances that became popular among Romanians and Hungarians during the Bocskay revolt of 1604 which had participants of the Hajduk, a hungarian military class from today's Hajdusag region of Hungary.
:) Posibil sa fie si in Dobrogea. Ce canta ei aici am si eu pe un cd si ii zice chiar asa: rustem oltenesc. Stii sa il dansezi? Am vazut cateva filme cu dansuri populare romanesti. Cauta "invartita" si "geampara". Ar fi dragut sa facem o colectie cu dansuri si muzica romaneasca traditionala.

"Haiduc" or "haiduk" is a word of Turkish origin which means "outlaw"; in Romanian it has a rustic or archaic connotation.
muzbey 4 years ago
It is near to Turko-Tataric meaning of word Cossack - but this one is more like - the one who is brave and violent:)

Wow. Very very low energy and conservative for Taraf de Haidouks. Also don't recognize the cymbalum player. Is he new, or recent?

This video is very old...i think is from 1990-91..judging by the clothes and hair look :)
bugas05 5 years ago
Din cate stiu eu, e un gen de muzica din Dobrogea, mai putin cunoscut decat geamparaua, dar la fel de spectaculos.
xplaur 5 years ago
E rustem. Rustemul insa e specific Olteniei si Munteniei. :)
