I'm sure Adams and the rest of the founding fathers would condemn our entire government, not just a separate party. We're slowly working towards a new monarchy where the same people are always in power and they are bought and paid for by anyone who needs a favor in Congress. I think the American Experiment has failed, sadly.
@patsfreak There is still liberty in this country, it may be hard to see, it may not be as powerful as it once was but it is still there. What we need to do is rise up against this horrible washed out congress. Full of fools and old men who would turn this country over to a dictatorship just to fill there pockets. We need LIBERTY and JUSTICE brought back to this country, and it starts by cleaning out our government.
@patsfreak sir. or madam , i say to you nay, failed ? nay . we have just forgoten where the true strenght and power of this country lies , with the people ALL the people from the old wasps to the blacks to the wetbacks ,, we need to reclaim our LIBERTY .. by ballot if we can by bullet if need be ,,
LONG LIVE THE REPUBLIC . JOIN US . LET US REBUILD THE IDEAL THAT AMERICA CAN STILL BE THE HOPE OF FREEDOM FOR OURSELVES AND OUR POSTERITY
I'm a patriot. A proud American. I am also a liberal, and an atheist. I stand behind Adams' words, but I also must ask, what the hell does it matter whether or not he would approve of our current government? So? He's dead. He never rode in a car, does that mean that we shouldn't today?
The fear today isnt the infringement of our Liberties, but what use we put them to.Stonewalling Reforms?Lets not get carried away. No one is being tarred & feathered. None of us have white masters. Please gain consciousness of the context and circumstances in which this speech was delivered
Adams believed in checks and balances because he knew the impulses of an unrestrained majority. As for political parties, he had no use for the opinions of others regarding the affairs of the nation. Adams believed in old school politics that it is the educated and informed man who makes the decision and while laudable, it is this belief that gave rise to the arrogance of the " party of government" that sought to expand its powrs at the expense of the states and the people.
Adams wouldn't waste anytime with anyone who he thought was ignorant and unread about the world around them. On Palin, he would have no use for what so ever and that would go for the Tea Party people too.
John Adams was a federalist, a party whose interested was in increasing the power of the federal government and very much in line with the thinking of the current democratic party save for a few bits here and there that came about as a result of cultural change since the 18th century. I'd think they have very much in common...Thomas Jefferson on the other hand would be more in line with Republican thinking about limited government etc.
you have to understand Adams didnt believe in "parties" He believes political parties would tear the country apart and he was right on that. Adams also believed in checks and balances in the goverment. He also believed in following in Pres. Washingtons footsteps as far as administration policies go, He kept us out of the war with France. Convincing congress to sign for independence. Adams was a remarkable man and one of our best presidents in my opinion.
Adams believed in a balance between federal and state powers, to keep the state from encroaching on the rights of the individual. Jefferson in his later years agreed with John Adams on those issues.
Then, as now, Massachusetts leads the nation into a future of liberty for all. Yes, my state was first in same-sex marriage. Yes, my state helps fund health care from all her citizens. Yes, my state is always near the best in the nation in test scores for our children. And, yes, we continue to elect leaders that Rush Limbaugh and brain dead right-wing hacks despise. Then, as now, short-sighted cowards like you resist change and focus on personalities and the past instead of on the future.
One of the greatest speeches of all time... This country was founded upon the belief of individual liberty, and we are now closer than we've EVER been, to completely losing that liberty... This nation has been moving slowly to the left, under BOTH Republican and Democratic rule, but now, under Obama, we're really on the fast-track to the far-left... We need to rise up on our founders' libertarian principles and protect our liberties, before they are gone!!!
Ask yourself if you really think Americans are more free than lets say the French. I dare say Americans are the least free of all the western industrialized nations.
You are the most free on paper perhaps, but you have let CORPORATISM enslave you all. An American without money is worthless trash. Do you think that was what the founding fathers had in mind?
Obama is trying to give you some basic rights, even if you don't have money.
Oh... and if you think Obama is left, visit Europe! :D

A great speech. And Paul Giamatti's performance as Adams was nothing short of brilliant.

Don't be so downtrodden. The flame of LIBERTY exists within each of us. Be patient. It takes a while to start a fire.
