iwas at this game my one and only away game in europe i remember the dutch had a massive banner it must have been 50ft long you could see it clearly from. One end of the stadium to the other it said in massive lettersF--K THE POPE.
Was at this game as Ajax supporter and remember seeing grown men cry like babies. You of course realize Ajax was *minutes* away from moving to next round? It was a sad day with pouring rain :)
one of my fave alltime matches, like myself anyone who was at parkhead for the first game didnt think celtic would stand a chance in holland but what a performance
@brian7193 I was at that first game too Brian ..They were all over us at Parkhead ..I couldn't believe it when we beat them with that last minute goal
cheers so much for posting this - God I remember listening to this as an 11 year old on the radio - me and my brother went mental when the 2nd goal went in. Had only seen this in B & W til now. Thanks again. PS - I still love that away strip!!
Dutch football was very weak at the time. Van Basten was 17 and Cruyff 35. Celtic were favourites, but Johan Cruyff made a great impression in the first leg. The Celtic-coach thought that Cruyff didnt need man-to-man marking because he was an old man. He certainly learned from that mistake. In Amsterdam he had Cruyff marked by some chap named Sinclair who followed him everywhere. Ajax was too dependent on a 35-year old player, who just came out of retirement because he had to make some money.
yes i know this but beating ajax in their own backyard is special!
ajax are one of the biggest names in europe so this is a great win.this is far from the best ajax team but they were still pretty decent and had good players!
@rudigero I am unaware of the state of Dutch football at that time. But this, by all accounts was a shock and Ajax were favourites due to the first leg. Also, being away from home was harder them days.
@kenwyne67 I remember seeing on the news that thousands of Celtic fans came to Amsterdam. So I always assumed that Celtic fans were confident in a good result. But I always thought that Scottish football was a lot stronger than Dutch football at the time. I recall that teams like Aberdeen and Dundee United played European (semi) finals.
@rudigero I will have to trust your word on Dutch football and on Ajax as i am from the U.K and support Celtic. I have a book called 'Celtic in Europe' and there are articles on this game in it and most of the Celtic players thought they had a slim chance. Maybe Ajax thought that too ? i don't know.
You are correct about Aberdeen and Dutd, who have not reached those levels since
@kenwyne67 Celtic was more experienced. You can see that in the course of the game: they didn’t go on an all out offensive, they had Cruyff marked by someone named Sinclair for 90 minutes, they forced an early goal and after the equalizer patiently waited for second. I don’t think Ajax-keeper Schrijvers looks good, though.
@kenwyne67 I was only six a the time and just learned how to read the newspaper. I remember that 2-2 in Glasgow was seen as a first international success for a new generation. I also remember Ajax-players leaving the field in Glasgow exulted. Perhaps they were a bit overconfident after that and that this rubbed the Celtic-players the wrong way.
@kenwyne67 Ajax (Cruyff) played a very good game in Glasgow. I believe Celtic were surprised by this. The state of Dutch football wasn’t that good at the time. Oranje didn’t qualify for tournament until 1988. Of course this Ajax wasn’t that weak, but they had demographic problem: the best players were teenagers and a 35-year old. And then there were Danish players, Lerby and Molby.
I was also at this game, after Charlies goal and he runs over to the corner, it's me running down (yellow t-shirt) arms out wide, celebrating. Great night in Europe.
Brilliant mate lol was just a wee bhoy listening to the game on the radio with my mate,i was thinking to myself look at the madman in with the ajax fans running down celebrating after the goal lol
what a player young charlie nic was i genuinely believe that had charlie stayed at celtic park instead of going down south celtic would of had another 9 in a row in the 1980's. hail, hail !
Great video, I was there. one of the greatest nights of my life. Amsterdam was a blast, they tried to intimidate us and we smashed them. I remember the post match celebrations, thousands of us. I remember Sinky Sinclair was immense that nite.... Anyone else have memories?, pls share

I was at both matches.
I was 19 .
Ajax were strong favourites before both ties.
In Glasgow Jesper Olson and Sorn Lerby were sensational.
As always Celtic too a massive support.
I remember being in the train station after the match in A-dam singing,
When it's spring again i'll sing again 2-1 in Amsterdam.

Same as Galvan. I remember me and my old man, I was 11 as well, jumpin about the front room. Terrific memories.
We could do with a perfomance like that at the Emirates tomorrow.
