@darbjackson SWA has operated 727's before. they use 737's only because they dont need to train maintnance for many different aircraft and it keeps cost for us customers low. you can google it bing it whatever.
I remember smelling that new aircraft smell when I was at an airshow and there was a UPS 757 they had just picked up from the factory. Its just like the new car smell but a little more stronger.
I work for SWA myself, and there is no way that SWA's gonna shell out money for ANY -800s, since the company's sold 6 of our brand-new -700s and leased them back. It just doesn't make any fiscal sense to purchase -800s when the company wants to keep costs down. Boeing needs to update that tidbit because WN's not desperate for any other 737s than the -700s.
If SWA wanted -800s, they could've bought out ATA, and assumed all their debt and assets. The 757s and L1011s would be sold off, and the -800s kept to work the Hawaii routes. But that didn't happen, so SWA has no plans to purchase any -800s. I shall read up on the WSJ and see what's being said.

I remember when SWA operated the boeing 727's, but that was many years ago! I think the boeing 737-700 is a good match for SWA, keeps the cost down.

-700. We don't use -800s due to flight attendant requirements. A 4th flight attendant would cost more to fly one airplane than a -700 with just 3.
