This is quite easily one of the best shorts I've seen. The colour, tone and presentation of each scene is soothing but still sharp. The mood of the film is constant through out and drew me in from the off. A beautiful song to begin with also. I have no idea how or why someone hasn't commissioned a full length feature with you yet. Stunning. Please keep up the good work and keep us informed of any more films in the pipe line.
Would have been easier to settle into the film if it hadn't been shot in a suburban neighborhood - background shots were inconsistent - open green, then suddenly white neighboring houses. Main character was great, but the props and setting were really "new" looking.
I'm a little confused by this. Who is William Brady? I thought the old guy might turn out to be the bounty hunter's self from the future, because he didn't give his last name and the bounty hunter did. Also the bounty hunter was bearded and he asked the old guy if he'd ever wore a beard, and then the old guy said not for a long time, implying that he is actually the bounty hunter from the future, but snyway that was just a guess.
@gregorycawthorne No, William Brady was the old guy (the owner of the house). He was also a wanted criminal and used to have a beard. The bounty hunter was hunting for wanted criminals, and in this instance, he was hunting for William Brady who he found.
@VSL123 And that's the beauty of this short film. From what these guys usually do, I was expecting the same sort of thing. It was a refreshing change of pace and a very well-done short film.
Really great vid! Please check out my new comedy short film "Love SIck"! I think you'll enjoy it! Just click my username and it will be the first video that pops up. Thanks so much!
this is great work. i really love the tone of it. however i would have left out the intercuts stating the date. they're not really relevant and drag the viewer out of the atmosphere, but that's just a little constructive critizism on an overall very well done piece of work.
@Jericholic129 Not knowing is the great part of great films! I think that they understood he killed the man or at least they knew he did something terrible. Like the beginning said, all wealth is meaningless if the soul is poor. Essentially they understood that his soul was "poor" and were disgusted, upset, lost their love for him, pick your choice of words, they knew something was wrong.
Why are you still making short films and not longer ones? and why do you only have 15k views here man!? This is great stuff, better than most all of what I have seen on this site. High marks to you sir. High marks indeed...
I couldnt get the sentence, which made O'Keefe confirm that it was William Brady. "Have you ever "warred" (?) a bear? " Would say, it will be haunting to replace the background music during the dialogue part, with the silent sound of the winds sweeping through the plains. Additionally, I would suggest removing the SUPERS, which suggest the evening part . I think, it made automatic sense
My 0.02$.
But man, its an amazing stuff. Doesnt feel like a short indie film, a truly great rendition
Robert Grubb deserves to be a big name actor. He is better than a lot of the actors in todays films. And I was also reminded of There Will Be Blood too.
Robert Grubb never ceases to amaze me with his talent. Wish I had the chance to see him live on stage in England or something (Oz is a bit far away for me). Nice story too, well executed. Setting was good too. Hope the short does well.
I made an account on youtube a number of years ago and one of the first videos I found was The Black Button. Who would think that 3 years later, I would come across a new video by that same group of people by chance. And behold, the tale told in a mere 15 minutes was compelling and memorable. Thank you, DarkHeartProductions, for another GREAT video that shows Youtube has an art side, and a great narrative.
@captainsomebody7 i found it intriguing enough. Tightening up the dialogue would only take away from the mystery, as something is obviously up, by the looks of the family.
The dialogue did a big part is setting the time as well. It also paints a colorful picture of another land, and lets us know about the traveler.
For not having been to film school, you put out an excellent short film here. The acting & cinematography were a joy to watch. Loved the sepia tones. The music was great esp when it added to the tense mood of the film when they were talking on the bench.
I felt the prolonged tolling of the bells in the beginning & the loud ticking of the clock at the end distracted from those scenes. But, overall, I enjoyed viewing your film & am glad YT featured it at the top of the site. Good Luck!
very well done. A couple parts where dynamic shots were mixed with static shots that seemed a bit off, but thats the only constructive criticism i can try and pass off. I enjoyed it. Keep up the great work guys!
If I saw parts of this as a trailer I would have thought it was a big box office movie coming out. Great job, and great acting! Usually it is the acting that gives away a home movie, or the type of camera they use, but this was perfect. The music is quite fitting as well and moving.
Loved the lighting, the intrigue, the suspense, the music & the acting! Only a minor point, but not completely sold on the titles as I would have liked to be able to read them more easily.
Interesting concept and daring execution. As a student filmmaker, I admire your work. Would you mind taking a look at my project/cinematography reel? It's on my channel page.
that was amazing. the writing was perfect. i forgot i was watching a video on youtube a minute into this. Nothing but positive things to say about this. amazing job.
Great job on this. You gave the video a really nice look. Also, the actors did an awesome job. Hopefully this gets scene somewhere else, like in a theater. Unfortunately, serious and artistic things like this don't usually do well on youtube.
I have been looking forward to this for quite some time, and believe me when I say that I was not disappointed. You have come a long way since "Black Button".
That was very awesome, I thought you guys were done with short films for a while there but I guess not. I'm very happy to see there is still yet a future.
