I love when a western army kills 1 or in this horrible case 500 the story is never forgotten but when then japanese army slaughtered thousands of chinese civilians or the nva or vc kills a bunch of vietnamese civilians or the atrocities throughout africa by militia groups and the taliban killing afghan civilians for the last 15 years, etc, its either forgotten or accepted. Why when a western soldier kills 1 civilian by accident its the top story on al jazeera but when the taliban does it its ok?

There is a fine line a soldier has to draw about when to kill and when not to. Soldiers have the right to refuse an unlawful order, as was given at Mi Lai. However, from day 1 at Basic, you're brainwashed to follow ALL orders...no matter how rediculous (SP?). The best advice I can give to any foreign troop at war is to treat the people as if the same thing were happening over here and it was YOUR loved ones in the line of fire.

They are not all brainwashed to follow orders. The hero of this massacre was Hugh Thompson Jr, the helicopter pilot who helped curtail the massacre. As a Warrant Officer, he was outranked by Stephen Brooks, a lieutenant, but he still argued with him about the massacre and managed to get 11 Vietnamese villagers out of hiding. He even ordered his two crewmen to fire their mounted M60s at the platoon if they shot at him or the villagers. He then reported what he saw to his superiors, who stopped it
