The reason why the official YouTube app doesn't 'work so well' is because Google is intentionally blocking Microsoft from having full access to the YouTube API's.

@GlenRoberts I highly doubt that considering the Xbox 360 now has a fully featured YouTube app, and it'd probably get Google some hefty fines in the EU for anti-competitive behaviour.

@dotnetpro you don't need the official YouTube app to use Metrotube. You will need it if you want to launch YouTube links from your browser though.

@Takd15 we lock HD into landscape due to performance constraints. Maybe when they get a bit more powerful :)

@Takd15 Why would you want to watch HD in portrait. The highest resolution possible in portrait mode is actually smaller than 360p.

P.S. Because the official YouTube app enables playback, it is required in order to view any YouTube video on a Windows Phone. If you uninstall it, Metrotube and other YouTube apps will not work.

The official YouTube app isn't an app, per-se. It's a plugin that enables playback of YouTube Videos.

Because the app doesn't have a user interface, they simply link to the YouTube mobile site when someone taps the app icon.

It is a little confusing. Perhaps they should have just created a single-page GUI for the app that displays the app, its purpose, and maybe links to the mobile site.
