Wow, rather hippocratic aren't we? Saying its wrong to oppress one kind of people while you're perpetuating that EXACT behavior. And who exactly are you to judge who is oppressed and NON-oppressed? I don't believe you stated any kind of information to support those kinds of claims.
Christians (primarily in public schools) are subjected to having to hear about evolution and things that try to disprove the existence of God and many have remained faithful to the Lord, despite science being shoved down their throat. If only atheists would just take the time to listen to the Gospel and learn God's side of the story, chances are that God would take off the blindfold that the world has placed before their eyes...
Atheism is the opiate of people who wanna live life as THEY want to without an Authority to tell them they're wrong. It's the opiate of those who want to find "logic" in things beyond their human reason. It's THE choice for cowards afraid of someone telling them they're wrong and that there IS something beyond what meets the eye.
The Gospel is for the brave of heart and spirit, not for the cowardly.
@HumansAreAnimals It seems to me that lumping all missionaries in together as being exactly the same is right on par with lumping all black people or all Jewish people or all males or females into one category. It's stereotyping and prejudiced. You're free to have your own opinion, but just be aware of what you're doing with it. And there were many people who told us that they were thrilled to have us there.
Yes because "lumping all missionaries in together" has had the same violent and disgusting results as "lumping all black people or jewish people... together". That was a trite and honestly insulting analogy, way to devalue the REAL discrimination that REAL oppressed communities go through by "lumping" your own NON-oppressed group in with us.
Missionaries have a legacy of NOTHING BUT EVIL. Now you're just tourists enjoying the poverty and currency inequality of the 3rd world.
@HumansAreAnimals Wow. Um, that is totally not what I was saying. I was saying that the act of making generalized statements about a certain group of people based upon a few individual instances is the same whether we're talking about missionaries or blacks or Jews. And you're absolutely right. There has been, and still is massive oppression and prejudice against many groups that missionaries perhaps haven't known.
@HumansAreAnimals But what about the man in Ethiopia who was converted to Christianity and went about to preach it to his fellow countrymen? The authorities arrested him and threatened him to stop preaching. They bashed his baby's skull open on the cement floor and shot his wife's brains out while he watched on because his gospel was too precious to him to quit preaching? He believes he'll see them again in eternity and that their suffering was temporary. So who's nothing but evil in this case?
@HumansAreAnimals hey derp it is already common practice in the middle east for the women to pray to mother marry. has been for a long time they actually have catholic churches. yeah its colonial bull shit but if it makes them happy. when ive spoken with indian women in america they said that the catholic churches that where mainly a womens thing after she came to america she relates it to almost a book club. a place for women to get together and unite. idk. i guess its just lame though.
Lol LOVE IT! Hilarious! I've seen it in a lot of Bollywood films lol
I'm gonna assume that was a missions trip right?
Man, I really wanna go to India! Of course, in God's will, it'll be after college but India is an amazing country! God has a great purpose for them and I really hope to be a part of that! God bless!
The first time I saw an Indian do this, I had asked him if he wanted another beer, he did this head bob and didn't say anything...and I thought to myself, was that a yes or a no LOL
I'm currently visiting India at the moment (from Canada) and I find it to be interesting, too. I have always heard about it and seen it at times, but when I got here I never realised that everybody does it! It has confused my understanding of responses at times, but I notice that it is also used at times when yes, no and maybe are not involved. I find it fascinating that some physical things are not limited to individuals, but can we so common among a nation of people. Very cool and interesting.
Christianity is not just a religion, it's a relationship with God and Our God teaches love and respect for others. This, as well as the death and resurrection of Jesus is what sets it apart from all of the other "Opiates" that teach selfishness and hatred. Sooooo...just make sure you are on the right Opiate or you will surely die....
Its a way of agreeing or saying yes in bulgaria also. And they actually say no with banding head down(our way to say yes or confirm. Literally opposite the rest of the world
If more Christian missionaries stayed home or learned about the country they were going to, you'd learn more about various cultures. Religion is an opiate of the masses.
@scorzi Yes, religion is an opiate of the masses, but (and all I can personally speak for is Christianity) it is an opiate without side effects or withdrawal symptoms. Christianity can take away a person's pain and give hope. It can be addictive, but only if a person gives themselves wholly to it. Sure, lots of Christians are physically abused in so many ways, but through it all, they can have a joy that no science or mere religion can explain. Yes, it is an opiate, but it's a freakin' good one.
@hopefullyhelpful you do realize that once you go christian, you basically adopt the philosophy that all non-christians will BURN in hell for all eternity, right? (Revelations 20:15). That is a very hateful mindset.
@Griesmayer Was it hateful to believe that anyone who stayed in New Orleans as hurricane Katrina rolled in would either die or be put at great risk? It would have, in fact, been hateful to know it was coming and give no warning. My belief that sinners will go to Hell has absolutely NO EFFECT on their actually going there. Their sin does that (Romans 3:23). So no it's not a hateful mindset at all. In fact, it's what gives us motivation to lovingly warn people of it & try to get them saved from it
@hopefullyhelpful yeah, and your mindset says all non-christians are sinners...it's a disgusting philosophy to treat other beliefs with such disrespect.
@Griesmayer But if you think about it ANY philosophy that claims to be the right way of thinking automatically relegates all other incompatible beliefs to the realm of being wrong. Sure, not all of them pair wrongness with being punishable, but you can never declare your way to be right without declaring someone else's way to be wrong. And besides, doesn't the Quran say something like all Christians and Jews are infidels and are to be killed?
@Griesmayer And besides that, my mindset does NOT say that all non-Christians are sinners. My mindset says that all EVERYBODY are sinners. Christians too. "There is NONE righteous, no not one...ALL have sinned..." (Rom. 3:10, 23). Even our attempts at righteousness are like rags used to mop up pus from leprous sores in God's eyes (Isaiah 64:6). And so obviously, no amount of our own efforts is ever going to convince God to forgive our sins. That's where His grace comes in.
@Griesmayer (continued) The Biblical mindset says that sin is not just the breaking of a few rules, but it is committing anything against the will of God, or failing to do something that He wills us to do. God is so unimaginably holy and righteous that we'll never be able to fathom how great He is. So even the smallest sin in our eyes is the same as murder in His eyes. Sin is sin. And yes sin destines us for Hell. But there IS and ESCAPE ROUTE. That's what so many naysayers miss about the gospel
@Griesmayer The gospel was never meant to be what so many Christians have made it. It is supposed to be about condemning sin, yes, but not sinners. Our goal is to paint SIN as the bad guy, not sinners. Sin is not your friend. Sin does not want what's best for you. God does!!! And that's what the Gospel is all about. It's about getting you free from the bad guy and rescuing you so you can go to Heaven. Where's the hate in that? Watch my vid about God sending sinners to Hell. Then we'll talk more.
@hopefullyhelpful you're still saying that it is best if everybody converted to your religion, i.e. accepting Jesus Christ as their savior and becoming Christians. Why can't your faith leave others in peace? Think about it: Wouldn't you be pissed off if some Hindu kept saying that converting to Hinduism is the only true path to bliss? Or imagine some Buddhist who kept urging you to follow the footsteps of Gautama Buddha to reach Nirvana? They don't do that, and neither should you. Take example.
@Griesmayer So let me get this straight. I can't tell people how to live, but YOU can tell ME how to live? Isn't that a bit of a double standard? You say, "They don't do that, and neither should you," but that puts you in the same category as me: telling others what to believe and what mindset to operate under. So I could tell you to practice what you preach there, bub. But then I would be telling you what to do, so I'll just say..., "Carry on."
@ryanm5593 oh, wow. like that's gonna make a difference. In the 21st century, it is hard to remain completely oblivious to christianity. Interestingly, that also applies for hinduism. What if some guru came up to you and said "you've heard word of hinduism, but you still continue to follow the petty ways of this jewish carpenter instead of recognizing the almighty authority of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Because of your insolence, you will be punished after death!" Wouldn't you feel pissed off?
@Griesmayer If you wouldn't mind humoring me a little here, could you please give me some biblical examples of Jesus' teachings being petty? I'd prefer chapter and verse from the Bible, but if you're not to familiar with it then just go ahead and tell me which beliefs you find petty, aside from what you've already mentioned.
@hopefullyhelpful ye ask, and ye shall receive: Deuteronomy 17:12 - kill people who dont listen to priests Exodus 22:17- kill witches Leviticus 20:13 - kill homos Leviticus 20:27 - kill fortune tellers Exodus 21:15 - kill child who hits there parents Leviticus 20:9 - kill child for cursing parents Leviticus 20:10 - kill adulterers Leviticus 21:9 - Death for fornication Exodus 22:19 - Death to followers of other religions Chronicles 15:12-13 - Kill ubelievers Zechariah 13:3- kill false prophets
@Griesmayer Thanks. I appreciate that. But those are all Old Testament examples. Jesus did not teach those things. Because under the Old Testament law, salvation was only available to Israelites. They were God's chosen people, and so there was really no point in trying to evangelize the Gentiles. Instead those who were accustomed to committing sin had to be rooted out so they wouldn't ruin the rest of the bunch. It didn't work though, b/c men were unable to keep that law. That's why Jesus came.
@Griesmayer After the Israelites committed spiritual fornication by serving false gods, God decided to give the Gentiles a chance. So Jesus came to give us a new covenant or new testament, one that operated on grace and faith instead of the law. Read Galatians 3 for some explanation. Such as verse 11 "Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because 'the righteous will live by faith.'" And verse 13 "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us."
@Griesmayer So the law basically existed to show man that we have absolutely no power to save ourselves. And instead of imposing upon us a system of rigid rules that no man is realistically expected to keep, we now have a system where Jesus Christ Himself paid the punishment for all our sins, and all we have to do is receive His Spirit and be baptized in His name, and our sins are forgiven. And with His Spirit within us, we can have the power we need to live righteously.
It's not a head bob for no reason. In Hindu and Indian culture they don't want to offend anyone, so they give a vague gesture (head bob) instead of being emphatic to guests and risk hurt feelings or insults.
@ThirdWorldHorn I honestly don't know what the song is called. I was with a group of people on a mission's trip in India and one of the people there gave this CD to a girl that was with us, and she let me rip the tracks to my computer before she took it home, and all I got was the music, without the album art or track names. But I guess it's a Christian group.
@ThirdWorldHorn This song is in Telugu language, the native language of Indian state of Andhra Pradesh where I belong and the singer is Bro. Anil Kumar - Yesu nulo naku anandam( In Jesus I am happy(tranquility)) and I suppose this people were for some missionary work and the head bobble is more common among South Indians rather than North Indians.
