I'm going to do a video about it soon, but the duck needs some edumacating first. Either way, it's painfully obvious that taking pictures of stars in the BLACK SKY above the atmosphere, sun in them or not, is merely a simple task that NASA seems to avoid at all cost...USUALLY. I wouldn't be surprised if nearly all photos they release are from their virtual reality sim.

Hmm. I don't get it. The bright spot is always at the same place of the Canadarm, but the star field moves between fotos. What's more, according to my good old rotating hand held star chart, the sun doesn't even move through that constellation, so it can't be the sun.

btw, I have been out this past few weeks looking at planets with my telescope. It occured to me that I saw (and photographed) a planet in the sky AFTER sunrise. So, I would assume that in a lunar morning, you should be able to see and photograph the same. You can see where this thinking goes, in regards to the "no stars" question: it is the wrong question.

The earth is uniformly lit in this picture. You show two other pictures with the sun and horizon in view, and both of them show strong contrast between the day and night regions of the surface. Why doesn't your picture?

It would be stupidly silly to put spend much effort putting telescopes on the moon.

There would be zero advantage over being in low earth orbit. They would be horrendously expensive to maintain. And a decent sized telescope (like the size of Hubble) would be difficult to land without damaging it (it would be MUCH more sensitive than a manned lander).

The photo is a crop of ISS028-E-016368 (which, mind you, is hardly the first photo of stars taken from the ISS). Digital cameras are nice in that they usually save metadata about the camera settings. A rather salient point here is that this photo was taken with a 4 second exposure at f/4 and ISO 6400 making it irrelevant to Apollo shots.

Imagine how washed out that image would be if taken during a daylight pass.

The reason the Earth can be so clearly seen during this nighttime pass is because the full Moon (99.77% illumination) is lighting the scene. Per Wolfram Alpha, the ISS was very nearly over the western edge of Australia at the time. If the exposure settings weren't proof enough that this was a night pass, the fact that it was 4:42 AM WST should make that obvious.

Certainly. This is obvious to anyone who has stepped outside in a moderately dark area during a full Moon. That 8% albedo is actually very bright, and it casts very strong shadows. In fact, try taking a 4 second, f/4, ISO-6400 picture during a full Moon. Betcha it'll look like day.

My best guess is that that is the Moon, although it could also be a light on the SSRMS. Determining which it actually is would require some extra analysis.

There's a fairly large amount of noise, as would be expected with an ISO-6400 image. Unfortunately, I don't know how to quantify this, so this stays as a qualitative assessment.

Motion blur is evident in the clouds on Earth, while completely non-existent on Atlantis or ISS structure. A similar photo (ISS-028-E-016131) shows no motion blur on the clouds and no stars either for f/9, 1/320, ISO-200.

And finally, after looking at a few pictures, I do believe that the "Sun" (or what I said was probably the Moon) is, in fact, a light on the RMS. I say this because similar photos from different days (ISS028-E-016952, ISS028-E-016955, ISS028-E-017393, amongst others) show a light at that location as well, making it unlikely to be a natural light (Sun or Moon).

Someone claimed stars can't be photographed without over-exposing? I didn't even know that. The problem I had with these Apollo supporters, was the claim you could not SEE stars from dayside Earth orbit, if you looked towards the deep space (away from the Sun). That is such an incredible statement!

@Aurinkohirvi You are quite right Auri! And am I right in thinking that this is what we are seeing? The Earth seems to be lit up here, indicating they are ON THE DAYLIGHT SIDE OF THE EARTH. We clearly see our SUN as a much bigger and brighter STAR in the SKY...Alongside all the other STARS visible from LEO from the DAYLIGHT side of the MOON!
