Curtis Fuller has influenced a lot of trombonists. Contrary to some beliefs you really do not have to solo in the upper register. You can also hear that Curtis is influenced by JJ Johnson as well, but he has also added his own personality especially the use of a big horn.
Curtis was one of the best of the ballad players amongst the greats of trombone jazz. And what a sound! He was playing an Olds Opera at the time of thie recording. One heck of a big horn.
@56conn6h Umm, well I wont doubt that Curtis has his place among great jazz trombonists , but to say he was the best of ballad players is a little far. No offense, but his interpretations of ballads are a little off of what would be considered the norm for a true "ballad player". Think Tommy Dorsey and Urbie Green. Much more lush, with a brilliant, dazzling high range and slide vibrato. That is the true definition of a "ballad player"
think I'm gonna pick up this album

Curtis plays some sweet 'n' soft stuff, with a big, full tone - & in total control of his chops. Love this tune!
Thanks!
