  • Great respect to Geoff Thompson, he is an excellent instructor. Nothing is rarely new under the sun. This has been in our system for ages. The secret is to define it where it begins and ends, this is a "Loaded Hip Principle" in ICC. The first motion of the hip turning inward is generally prompted by a check or control or feint, as the second expanding motion is issues with a strike. Kudos to Sensei Kimuru! There are a few that really know what they are doing, but look at the results!

  • @petercr49 It is not about permission it is discussion. You use an example from when he was 19 and at most a 1st Dan as a condemnation fo his entire career - that is flawed beyond belief in logical terms, especially as it preceded Pete competing in full contact (and winning) and his work with Geoff.

    Have a nice day too

  • i usually carry a gun on my hip, i feel like this technique would fling my handgun from its holster :P

  • can this be directed to the face?

  • Sensei Peter came to do a master class for my employers club last year, he gave my boss whiplash through a ten inch pad, my boss is not only a 4th dan black belt he is 6 foot 2 inches tall and second line rugby player. so please don't be deluded in your misunderstanding of what this man is capable of.

  • Bloody hell. I was telling some folks about the double hip twist and looked for a clip. This guy trained our TKD group many moons ago. All Saturday with rubber knives and many bruises.

It was an eye opener to put it mildly.

  • I have to say, regardless of how in shape he is, or how effective using the "Double Hip" system is, he's certainly refined the movement.

  • The holder of the pad is at the very least half Peter's weight!! So it would look good?

  • @petercr49

I remember that too. Myles Burke?

  • Did the double Hip myself for years, but think the Shotokan Single Hip is just as powerful, but faster! I know Peter too, trained with himin the Shukokai Days.

  • BOB SYKES in the red top another legend and editor of martial arts illustrated.

  • fuck me this dude has power.

  • 1) This is a pre-emptive strike

    2) In S/D situations, u engage the assailant's brain with a random question

    3) Telegraphing's not an issue if you use 2) above

    4) Peter C can bang - and is a great instructor. Rated one of the top 5 martial arts streetfighters in the world (Black Belt Magazine)

    5) Keyboard warriors, by not thinking before u type, u make it public, to people that know what they are doing, that u know jack shit!

    6) Thinking b4 acting/speaking is self preservatory on the street!

  • @RealityBasedSystems Hell yeah!

  • For a not-especially-big bloke that is an awful lot of power. Without the pad that would absolutely end you, and I'll bet it's a good ab work out even with the pad.

  • Sorry I said Thomson I meant Consterdine, they have vids together, I like them both. cheers

  • Cool vid. what he is calling the "double hip system" looks like one manifestation of a concept we use in Systema called "The Wave". we would do an elbow down punch just like that. But the wave concept is broader; the "double hip" just one of many kinetic chains you can whip through your body, they can end in kicks, headbutts, knees, slaps, shoulders etc etc. they don't all start at the hip. you can even use whip-like waves in grappling, especially in transitions. Tx for posting; I like Thomson

  • To all those knocking Peter, Geoff Thompson has an amazingly powerful punch and many street knockouts and undefeated fights to his name and he considers Peter to be the meister. Ive not had the pleasure of training with Peter but I have with Geoff, Al and a few other BCA guys and believe me they can all motor. They train for reality and the physical is the last resort and if it gets to that you probably wont even know you've been in a fight with them cos it'll all be over before you know it.

  • To all the keyboard warriors slagging him off, just google his name and see what you find.

  • At last, someone focusing on the power of the double hip-twist. First class.

  • Is this and the whole system covered in his dvds power strike and power kicking?I heard the quality of the picture on his dvds is bad but still worth getting is that true?

  • great illustration for koshi no kaiten man! kudos!

  • I understand some of the science of this. If I'm interpreting it right, this is actually really good a serious power hitting. Who all here would vouge for this guy and/or technique?

  • @PrinceAzeriel Mr. Consterdine is considered to have one of the heaviest punches around. I will totally jump at the chance of training with him and suggest you do the same if at all possible. :)

  • peter has done this shit for a very very long time you dont see it as when its done there are other factors. and this old guy who bust most of you wide open trust me

  • old man's got some power

  • Sigh, all this talk about telegraphing. When done correctly the hip and the hand look like they move simultaneously as the punch is millseconds behind the hip.. He's breaking it down here for instructional purposes.

If you are standing from a tournament distance, this will telegraph your intentions badly. At a distance of 18 inches, as he mentioned, the hip movement is too small, and the hip and punch too fast, for the vast majority of defender to react adequately.

  • doesnt matter. no one can react fast enough to block that, despite the telegraphing. combine that with deception (talking), and the chances of dealing with it are close to zero.

  • The sound? what is is happening ? I did the dubble for about 16yrs, now don't see the purpose of it, the Shotokan hip twist is faster and just as strong!

  • This might work against someone with zero training. Talk about telegraphing a punch.

  • Hey kev no disrespect intended but you should listen to how the punch is disguised as explained to hide telegraphing......

  • dont you listen ??? you fool i you came across this guy he would slap you clean out (FACT) peter was rated in the top 5 street fighters in the u.s (FACT) you fool

  • @muffingman99 how would you even rate somone in street fighting for that they would have to actual street fights not in a ring or somthing...i looked it up and its not fact..

  • I think the point is that in a fight (e.g. when your opponent realise he's fighting you) it would be telegraphed but the purpose is to strike your would be assailant before they've actually started attacking you whilst disguising what you're about to do with dialogue, in other words a sucker punch.

  • Who said you cant teach an old dog new tricks....!

i have been working the security industry 20 years now mainly clubs and pubs and have had some real time training (on the job if you know what i mean)over the years my long style kung fu has saved my ass many times...your double hip technique is brilliant and generates awesome power in close...Thanks for the technique as i will practice this until i master it.....

  • Hi Grandpa!!!

  • Could he pick anyone smaller, with a smaller pad????

  • @shogunsan21 Guy in the red top is Bob Sykes old school ass kicker and editor of martial arts illustrated I think he can handle it :-)

  • @shogunsan21

He doesn´t use power.. its just to show.. not to show the impact.. i felt his impact on a seminar.. devastating!

  • Excellent tips!

  • Cheers...

  • he moves really freely for an older guy. props to him. loose hips are king. good stuff.

  • Good vid from a guy who has been there and done it. Knows his stuff.

  • This guy definitly has power and I respect him for what he said about using it not for fighting but to pre empt and to defend NOT TO FIGHT.Interesting technique though very similar to what we call in Yang style Tai Chi as shooting the bow.Basically using a single hip form of this but using a bow stance to produce much more power with less external energy used also its very balanced and even.

  • To all the people making negative comments know this: You do not have the RIGHT to comment or judge untill you have held an impact pad for someone who can really deliver measurable impact, shock and stopping power. hold the pad, feel the penetration of the punch,,,,, then log on and make ya comment!

  • In the beginning, "everything big circles." Then refine those circles to become unnoticable in the opponent's eyes. This is the begginning to real internal power, which causes internal damage to the opponent. By making your hips more ballistic and smaller(refined) you also will generate a frequency of power much shorter and denser. So the power transfer, will not travel through the opponent, rather stay inside. This will be tramatic to the opponent.KEY, is to show "no desire" in your blows.Peace

  • Interesting because my great grandmaster Da Liu taught me intent is one of the most important things to delivering an internal blow.I agree with you on the smaller circles leads to a more dense precise internal punch. However I do not believe it is the fist step or even the fifth smaller circles come over a long time of training and Qi Gung and breath techniques IN MY OPINION are the begginning to learning cultivating and using internal blows.

  • Hi LawDescendant,

I agree with everything you say. I commented just based on what I was seeing. But yes, years of chigung and body mechanics is trully the foundation. I also agree with what your grandmaster says. It just that most people (in general) tend to skip the body mechanics part and go straight to the intent. Intent is added later, in my opinion.

  • You can test this out by having someone holding a bag. HIt the bag with no intent and no thought. Then hit again with thought and intent. Have the person interpret which one "shakes" his insides more. Pretty interesting test. It's almost like the intent of wanting to project power, just gets in the way. I say this based on my personal observations, in theory of course.

  • Interesting how no where in your tag column you enter keywords like internal martial arts, hsing-yi chuan, fa-jing. You are doing is what I call "discovering your hips." It takes people many years to deliver punches like you do. If I may add something to advance your power. Begin training in refining how you deliver your blows. I mean that the hips show move more ballistic. In doing that, also work on severly reduce the large hip movement by making your hip motion more spasmatic.

  • Why do these people always bounce back when they're holding the "hitting thing"?? The guy dooes not generate enough power to do that if the guy was standing properly? It's all about the psychology between the student and the master. Why do I know this? Long combat sports experience...

  • if the guy had good footing while holding the foam block, he would be too short for the teacher to demonstrate on. therefore he stands there in a less stable form, but leveled to his teacher's hitting range for demonstration.

  • go do some sparring in mma, and see how long you last old man.

  • You miss the point, this is not about going rounds with fellow martial artists or grapplers or boxers, its about hitting and knocking down some agro drunken asshloe on the street and it works. Its worked for me more than once!

  • He's older now, but he was one of the guys doing the full-contact karate (basically ring fighting) in the 70s. I went to a seminar of his, and he punches and kicks like a young guy even now. It might look a bit odd out of context, but if you get the chance have another look at his books and see if it is of interest. All of these guys are really pro-MMA as a way of developing skills and character - they definitely think it's important.

  • all fine but unfortunately we now live in a society where people are more likely to just pull a gun on you Hip power is highly under estimated and not covered enough as is neck muscle training. This chap i believe is ex SAS, like my father so he knows his stuff. So much crap pertaining to so called martial /fighting arts on youtube but this is realistic with plausable applications. Like it !

  • Lovely. I like using hip...highly underestimated!

  • good basic for learning vibrating fa jing. exagerated motion allows people to catch it.

  • I'd like to see his legs!

  • What's with the nose???

  • Excuse me, I cann't understand your comment. What does it mean?

  • Look at the video!

  • I think Dude just got done Choppin up a line, and it tickles his nose.

I mean hey this guy is a bouncer at Nightclubs, im sure he can score his drugs.

  • this is the way I generate power too..I watched this with the sound down so idk what he is saying but he has alot of power..to the people who say u can't use this in a fight they r wrong..just have to set it up with slaps, leg kicks or jabs..then BAM!!

  • i like how he punches with the bottom 3 knuckles using Jack Dempsey's Power line...

  • are yh but peter dose not use jack dempseys power line jack users peters.

  • fuck outta here. Depmsey was born WAY before him

  • yes maybe but he was not born befor the man that startd it he was called kimorea

  • elaborate plz...

  • From wiki: "Shukokai is a group of closely related styles of Karate, based on Tani-ha Shito-ryū, a branch of Shito-ryū developed by Chojiro Tani in the late 1940's. Shukokai was designed around the study of body mechanics, and is famed for its 'double hip twist' to maximise the force of its strikes." Shigeru Kimura was a long-time student of Tani's. I've trained with PC at a seminar, and he is one of a number of guys who did the full contact karate in the 70s in England and Europe.

  • dempsey was a boxer in the early 1900's. before kimorea created Shukokai

  • Sure, and there are other boxers who have used versions of it too. But the double-hip PC teaches does come from the Shito-ryu line. However, the BCA is a 'magpie' organisation, and freely admits having multiple influences on what it teaches and promotes.

  • just out of curiosity did they take anything from Bruce Lee????

  • Have a look at Mo Teague at World Combat Arts, or any of Rick Young's stuff, for the Jeet Kun Do influence - But it varies from instructor to instructor. Geoff Thompson advocates a base of boxing and judo combined with the fence, PC has this very strong 'barging' and power moves, Richard Gannon has a number of vids on you tube showing a combination of open hand and 'scruffy' techniques. All based on the principles of pre-emption, and then escape - not fighting, but self defence.

  • This isn't for in a fight.

This is to waste someone before the fight starts.

    Good shit

  • This guy scares me. He looks like he can break bones by just colliding with yours- without even really putting muscle behind it. lol. This video made me relize I should have drank more milk as a little girl. lol

  • Great technique. Can be found in Shukokai, Sankukai and several other systems, including the one I teach. Consterdine is the real deal.

  • Where did you get the videoclip? :-)

  • This is the basis of the Choi Kwang do martial art.

Great for power but you have to appreciate that it you want to use it against someone good you need to tighten up alot and mask it- the best boxers, thai fighters don't do this for good reasons.

  • is this a dvd ?where can i get it?

Look up Geoff Thompson and look under Dvds.

  • is this a dvd ?where can i get it?

  • Peter Consterdine is the most modest man on the planet. 8th Dan Karate and as fit as they come and he says they are better fighters than me, makes you think how well you and I would do.

  • When I trained in Shukokai Karate Shihan Sabatino always talked about the door hinge. If you hold the bag for a good guy that knows the technique well, you should black out for a little bit when hit to the body. I experienced this from Chris C. each time he punched. Whoever trained with Sabatino punched hard. The kicks are worst hehe lol.

  • Yes that is Shigeru Kimura's double hip technique. Shukokai Karate. He made it shorter later on and taught you how to get the same power from a less telegraphic position. Sensei Sabatino taught this in NJ one of his earliest and top students who keeps low key today. Great stuff.

  • this is kimura's double hip technique :)

    /cheer

    nice video

  • u are putting ur weight on the left leg right?

  • Does this not telegraph your movement to the opponent, giving them valuable reaction time? Any response would be appreciated.

    Thanks for posting the video.

  • If this technique is not perfected, I guess it will be telegraphed (it takes a little more movement than a normal punch), but I don't think that's a very big difference of timing, I bet no unexperienced fighter will notice. However, even with the telegraph problem of the double hip strike, there are always moments when you can distract your opponent to give you those fractions of second you need to execute the technique without telegraphing by your opponent's eyes :D

  • MMA is NOT real fighting!

  • stop masturbating

  • Yeah, and this would surely work in UFC... Fuckin wanker!

  • Really glad that you dont understand, f´king coach potato. I bet your the kind prat that sits religiously watching UFC gobbing popcorn across the room. This bloke would destroy you with his breath. Idiot.

    ━━━━┃ ┗━━━━━━┛┃

  • Does the clip say " punching for the ring" ?? no it's about the street not the UFC you dick, I have trained with this guy and he and geoff thompson are the real deal, try getting off the sofa and training with them before you comment. knob.

  • is that coz hes brittish and has bad dental hygene?

  • @SharmaYelverton I am not American. That's funny you mention retarded, because everyone in the Royal Family is Inbred, that's probably why this idiot thinks slowing yourself down makes you faster and more powerful.

  • this move works a treat. steve timperley caught me a cropper at a demo for the bnmaa

  • not in every, i like guys who creat there own style ... stupid

  • this is the basics of punching or kicking technique in any martial arts, isn't magic ¬¬

  • How would you implement this in a real fight though...in MMA, where the target is not standing still?

  • (not sure why someone gave you a negative, as this is a fair point) A lot of the BCA emphasis is on pre-emptive strikes, and striking in that part of an encounter which precedes an actual fight. They discuss learning the signals of someone about to attack you, and being first to the gun. It's difficult to explain in a few words without missing loads of detail. '3-second fighter' by Geoff Thompson (PCs co-founder of BCA) is best on this - you can find it on his website (I'm not on comission!

  • I went to the BCA seminar Nov 2006, and the morning session was learning the double-hip from Peter for the slap, punch, and elbow. Absolutely awesome, the closest thing there is in real life to a 'magic punch'.

  • RP1816

Could explain what Peter means by the hinge?

    Cheers

  • Sure, if you put one hip, usually the left, forward, and then use that as a pivot for your other hip, you are essentially using the left hip as a hinge on a swing door to put your body forward, as opposed to pivoting on a centre invisible line going down through your head (Peter actually used the 'door analogy' at the seminar there too, calling it a revolving door which of course doesn't go forward) 2.10 to 2.50 is a good camera angle and explanation (and the elbow is great).

  • Charlie nelson also used something like this, it was called a swivel punch

  • Krav maga sucks tho

it seems like he canot harness his energy he punches but he shivers when he dose

  • Very nice! PLEASE put a "peter consterdine" tag to your tags.. because if you search for peter consterdine you dont find this video!

  • This is the base of the 'shotokai karate':use the weight of the body.

  • Great stuff!

  • I don't know alot about street fighting but when I threw a punch normally and then with the using my hips as a hinge I got about twice the power. When I did the kind of "double hinge" or whatever like he did I doubled the previous. Pretty interesting really.

  • This is a scientifically tested technique. A Japanese martial artist and expert kinetic physicist measured different fighter's striking techniques with diodes. This was found to be the most effective way of striking. A Master of this technique kicked a guy's ear clean off with it in a street attack.

  • I have attended a BCF open day in Edinburgh with Peter and he is very effective. I was 13 stone and using open hand 'slaps' quite easily moved me off the mat with strikes powered with the hips engaging like this. My style is Aikido and we are familar with engaging the hip.

  • nice techniques, im gonna steal them now.

  • hmmmm, double hip, why not just pivot one way instead of that silly twist - seems a bit silly. and mate, if you know someones a better fighter than you, just save a kicking and dont fight him/her.

  • What dvd is this footage from?

  • Peter Consterdines´s "Powerstrike" Search in google for "peter consterdine" and check out his homepage!

  • kid weighs about 130 kinda light

  • great post of this physics demonstration. I just wish the sound was better. Some sort of overlay problem i guess. The bangs are coming before the impact.
