@veldman55 Who said anything about a team of North American losers. Im a Bruins fan and have been since I was a kid, there are actually a lot of them in the east, Nova Scotia, PEI, etc, the fact that they finally won the cup after 39 years with a bunch of Canadian boys, some of which from my hometown makes it all the more sweeter. Like I said before I don`t like the European flair of the Red Wings, simply my opinion, not because I hate them, because I hate the Euro style compared to my Bruins.
@BostonCreamDonut the same time frame that they had Yzerman they also had the russian five and that was one of the greatest lines in NHL history, are you so ignorant that you'd rather have a losing team of north Americans, not even Americans, then love a great team that drafts talent and molds them into great players
@BostonCreamDonut Detroit for the last couple decades has had a large portion of their roster made up of Europeans. Perhaps this is why they have made the playoffs for 20 straight years. While some teams, Boston for example, are currently riding a not so impressive 4 year playoff streak.
@LUBJUGS Im not talking about playoff streaks, my point is that Detroit as of late has seemed to stray away from the North American skater, Howe, Yzerman, Shanahan, Sawhuck, Kelly, Chelios, Lindsay etc. The Bruins are full of Canadians and just won the cup.
@BostonCreamDonut But those "eurotrash" players have created that playoff streak, My point is, Detroit has been one of the top teams in the NHL for the past 2 decades and its Europeans players like Lidstrom, Datsyuk, and Zetterberg. Is there something wrong with having great players from Europe? I will take a Lidstrom and Datsyuk over any North American player in the league.
@LUBJUGS Again I told you the point im making is not about playoff streaks, the Red Wings could have a 100 year playoff streak for all I care, Thats not the point im making, its simply the fact that Detroit has started to draft less players from Canada and the US. You sure, you`d rather have a 33 and 31 year old over a star in the making Doughty or Giroux or Stamkos etc lmao bullshit. Another yankee who thinks he knows it all. next.
@BostonCreamDonut They're awesome at drafting, developing, and ultimately letting canadians play if they're talented enough by picking them up on waivers
@BostonCreamDonut I know playoff streaks are not your point, but I'm confused to why you called them eurotrash to begin with. I assumed it was to make a point talent wise but that is obviously not the case so my mistake. I'm now guessing it's just because you believe only North American (Canada to be specific) should be good at hockey. Sounds like someone is butt hurt about hockey players from somewhere outside the continent. And you bet your ass I would take Datsyuk over any of those players.
@LUBJUGS I actually mentioned Chelios, last time I checked he`s not Canadian, but to answer your question when I call them eurotrash I mean they are shy in the corners, don`t hit as much and are more finesse. If you compare the way the Red Wings play to the Bruins the Red Wings play more of a Euro style, while the Bruins play a dump and chase, hard hitting North American style-Canadian. To answer you`re other question no I would not take an aging Datsyuk over Toews, Stamkos or Giroux.
It's extremely underestimated how important that goal was for the Red Wings. There was chatter earlier that season about potentially trading Yzerman, rumors that Scotty Bowman would not return, and a core that had been chasing a Cup for a few years could've been broken up. All of the winning they've done for so long, may not have happened if they had not won this game.
@MwingnutD Wow I so agree with you. IMO we would never have won the Cup..any of them....if not for this one goal. It wasn't just a game winner, or a playoff winner. This goal freed us from whatever was holding us back from winning it all. We broke through the wall with this one, and every Wings fan knew it. It had to be Yzerman, so fitting.
Probably THE best scoring shot in NHL playoff history. How many players can send a high-rising shot past the goalie from the blue line while moving forward? Stevie-Y is the man!!
Great goal for Stevie Y, one of the best ever from Gary Thorne, one of the best announcers ever. The only thing that ruins this video is that asshole with the airhorn at the end.
@Byks82 Dude have you watched him? He doesn't play defense. His entire career he was always posted waiting for outlet passes. You'll never see Gretzky playing defense, digging in corners or laying down to block a shot. In fact watch the video, he doesn't even try to get his stick in the way of the shot. Just lets Yzerman shoot the puck. He isn't the best, just scored the most points. He wouldn't make it in the nhl in today's game. Maybe you should go watch the WNBA.
@2girls1freak Oh, Montreal and Detroit were very fierce rivals back in the 40s and 50s. Toronto also faced them in the cup finals a few times during the 50s and 60s, too. That's why they deserve mentioning.
Chicago and Detroit are the top two teams in the central division so it's always tight between them.
And do I even need to explain the Avs and Devils?
I think this goal is memorable only because Yzerman scored it. Otherwise it's nothing special because Detroit lost in the next round against Colorado.
@leafyutube Seriously? It's Hull & Gretzky vs. Yzerman & Federov. It's double overtime, and it's a game seven of a series that the Blues battled their backsides off to get back in. I'll never forget that puck going off of Gretzky's skate and right to Yzerman's stick. Because I am a huge Blues fan, this is the most gut-wrenching sports moment of my life.
There are MANY series that went to seven games with OT. So what? As I said, Detroit lost in the next round anyways. If this goal wasn't scored by Yzerman, it wouldn't be a big deal.
@leafyutube Just because your team has sucked for your entire life and our team managed to pull ourselves together doesn't make it irrelevant. After this year is when Detroit started rallying behind the Wings and pulling for them as a city. Yes the Wings lost, but that loss also fueled the rivalry behind the Wings and the Avs, which speaks for itself
Anyone have a video of that jerk Nick Kypreos jumping on Grant Fuhr, thus injuring him for the playoffs, in the previous series? The Blues had a great run to make, losing Grant Fuhr and having to rely on Jon Casey changed a lot of things. Still, one of the absolutely nicest shots of all-time. I marvel each time I see it.
I guess it's more indirect- but Yzerman's goal not only ended the game but the series, and the Wings next opponent would be the Avalanche in the Conference Finals. And it was during that series that Claude Lemiuex smashed Kris Draper into the boards from behind, and the rivalry was born.
@GrassValleyGreg And before that... the Red Wings eliminated the Original Winnipeg Jets. 1996 all around the Red Wings made history in all 3 playoff series that year, and don't forget there incredible season...
@GrassValleyGreg And then on March 26th of 1997, he, Forsberg, and Roy got bloodied. :D don't remember who fucked up Forsberg.. was it.. Igor Larinov? which is CRAZY cause he NEVER fights EVER.. he wasnt that type but thats how much the anger was between the two teams... Roy got fucked up by Vernon.. and Lemieux got DESTROYED by McCarty.
Yea, when McCarty popped Claude when he was looking the other way.. Not hard to turtle someone when you do that. When they actually FOUGHT it was very close, which is surprising because, like Larionov, and unlike McCarty, Claude was no fighter. Yea Roy had blood on his face, big deal, takes one good shot to do that. Roy landed more punches and better punches than Vernon did. I was impressed with little Mike's fight, be he did not "fuck Roy up" in any sense. Epic stuff, though.
@MrMrSouthphilly excuse me pal??? your talking about the greatest fucking hockey player to every lace up a pair of skates... you best check yourself before coming on here looking like a fucking idiot trashing 99...
@MrMrSouthphilly shut the fuck up retard... read your fucking comment and tell me it does not look like ur trashing wayne... and even if it is a joke where the fuck did u come up with that bullshit statement anyway...
@GrassValleyGreg Been an Avs fan since the late 90s and I must agree.
Miss the old days when it was Sakic vs. Yzerman and you knew it was gonna be a battle. The closest guy that I can think of that is like Sakic or Yzerman now is Jarome Iginla - wish he could get a ring but the Flames are mediocre at best.
@asspirate123456 Sutter is an idiot (both of them). When they fired Keenan they should have gone and hired Dave Tippett. A proven coach who's been a winner everywhere he's gone - won the Turner Cup with the Houston Aeros of the IHL, got the Stars to the playoffs every single year and has resurrected Phoenix the last two years. IMHO he's the best least known coach in the NHL if that makes sense.
Ah, to be fair Datsyuk does have a closet full of Lady Byngs.... Uses some of them for coffee cups probably lol.
But of course we can't forget that it was this goal that lead to the series that birthed the greatest rivalry in modern NHL history (and arguably modern pro sports history across the board). The two best teams in the league at each others throats. Can't beat it.
@GrassValleyGreg Thanks for the compliments on the username haha. the Canucks represent, to me, everything that is wrong with hockey thus the username. if I had to list the many reasons I hate Vancouver I'd be wasting my time. I hate the Wings but respect them as a first class organization, I hate Vancouver AND I don't respect them. Simple as that.
Yea, Burke is gone at least but I've never been fond of them either and since the Bertuzzi incident I pretty much lost all respect for them as well. I've been rooting for Canada to get a cup as it's been a good long while since Patty Roy and the Habs- and I typically in all sports root for the Western team in the final... But not this time! Add another trophy to the pile, Boston! lmao
Thorne is such a wasted talent these days in both baseball and hockey. It's a shame he languishes on radio broadcasts and Orioles games while the majority of the audience for the sports' biggest games are stuck with the thoroughly mediocre Joe Buck and Doc Emrick.
gary thorne needs to call the stanley cup playoffs again.....by the way, im a Flyers fan more than anything else in the world, but this is an awesome goal, a great call and one of the best moments in sports history
Gotta love the two fans at 1:28. They jump in front of the camera for shits and giggles, and wind up in one of the most famous replays in NHL playoff history!
@bernier42 couldn't agree more... how awesome would it be to say to someone whos watching this "hey that was me who jumped in front of the camera" major like !
Gretzky has nothing on Yzerman bitches. Detroit Red Wings <3

Greatest goal in modern NHL history.
....From an Avs fan.
GrassValleyGreg 7 months ago
@GrassValleyGreg Been an Avs fan since the late 90s and I must agree.
Miss the old days when it was Sakic vs. Yzerman and you knew it was gonna be a battle. The closest guy that I can think of that is like Sakic or Yzerman now is Jarome Iginla - wish he could get a ring but the Flames are mediocre at best.

@VancouverChokers Yeah and they are only getting worse as the team is getting older.
asspirate123456 7 months ago
@asspirate123456 Sutter is an idiot (both of them). When they fired Keenan they should have gone and hired Dave Tippett. A proven coach who's been a winner everywhere he's gone - won the Turner Cup with the Houston Aeros of the IHL, got the Stars to the playoffs every single year and has resurrected Phoenix the last two years. IMHO he's the best least known coach in the NHL if that makes sense.

@VancouverChokers
Btw you're name is awesome haha.

@VancouverChokers

Gotta love the two fans at 1:28. They jump in front of the camera for shits and giggles, and wind up in one of the most famous replays in NHL playoff history!
bernier42 8 months ago 3
@bernier42 couldn't agree more... how awesome would it be to say to someone whos watching this "hey that was me who jumped in front of the camera" major like !

Datsyuk literally looks like a shorter Kozlov, its like he woke up one day and said he'll play like Kozlov.
