you may want to ignore it but when judging anything, sports players, politicians, and yes bands the impact on others is part of it, and who had a bigger impact on music? Who admires GnR or wants to sound or be like them...Then ask the same question for nirvana. I love both jd and pixies as mentioned, but saying nirvana was a minor act in comparison to them, just an idiotic statement. I mean you can't honestly believe that.
@neonbible08 Chances are because it's quite too easier to try to be like Nirvana than Gn'R. You just need to learn some chords, purchase a distortion gear, and well of course you need some creativity but let's not exageratte it's not the big deal. On the other hand, I don't see too many newcomers trying to be like King Crimson, maybe because its music it's terribly difficult to even try to play it. According to your POV, Nirvana has more impact than KC, huhuhu!
@MechaGojira00 haha you are contradicting yourself, all I need is a guitar and to learn a few cords, but you gloss over the creativity thing-(not that big a deal lol) Pointless arguing over music, people have different opinions, I love Jd, interpol, pixies all alot, among my favorites, but they're not nirvana. Although you may believe the nirvana's music was simple, it resonated, and I don't know how one would listen to nevermind and then in utero and label them boring or a minor act.
@neonbible08 The problem in here is you not being able to read accurately. When I said that creativity wasn't the "big deal" I was talking about Nirvana. I said it once and I repeat it, both Gn'R and Nirvana had a shitty attitude -even worse was that of Pearl Jam-, but at least Gn'R could record a bunch of songs quite interesting compared to those Nirvana did. You need to start listening to some real music, ok maybe not Gn'R, but neither Nirvana, the most overrated band in history
I don't have to defend Nirvana..in conversations of the best 10 to 20 bands of all time nirvana is in the conversation, GnR is not...Slash being good at guitar, well thats another conversation
@vfebm Nirvana recorded a couple of good albums and like a dozen of really good songs, but it was just a minor act compared to JD or Pixies. And of course if I've got to chose between Nirvana and Gn'R, I quite much prefer the latter. Both bands had a shitty attitude, but Gn'R were musically more advanced than the basic and sometimes blunt and boring Nirvana.
@neonbible08 Oh, this idiot doesn't know what advanced means, does it? So if I say that Swans are more advanced than JD or Led Zeppelin than Gn'R, he won't grab a word either. The "impact Nirvana has"? Hahaha! Yeah, sonny every new band is trying to sound like Nirvana... But if for you "impact" is the same as fame, then we're all fucked up and Lady Gaga has more impact than anyone. What a moron, go back watch your soap operas, you won't hear words quite advanced like advanced there
@MechaGojira00 Last time I checked GnR weren't some indie band. Outside of slash being good at guitar, GnR suck, their songs sound so dated, welcome to the jungle is a novelty song now. Some people ie YOU ..technical proficiency is most important, when in fact its almost the least important thing..i bet you love chickenfoot, that joe santrini * can really play the guitar, wonderful. GnR musically more advanced?? yea a shitty 80s hair metal band, they were ace.
@MechaGojira00 If you hate "basic" songs so much, why are you listening to Joy Division? Most JD songs have one incredibly basic bassline that doesn't change from chorus to verse. This one for example, has 3 notes (counting octaves as one note), and a couple of fills. Same goes for Isolation, Disorder, and Shadowplay. The reason for this is that basic music, e.g. JD, Nirvana, is good and advanced music, e.g. Gn'R, is horrendous.
@chilipeppers91 That quite depends on what you mean by "basic". I love a lot of bands having less technical resources than JD, Bauhaus, and the like. What I really dislike is the mediocre attitude in bands like Nirvana, and Gn'R as well, I stated it from the very beginning. But then one moron started crying about the "impact" of Nirvana being the most important shit in the world. And man, you can't put JD and Nirvana in the same lot, JD was really something
"Kurt Cobain couldn't hold Ian's jock strap. There is no comparison between Nirvana and Joy Division". Quite possibly the greatest and most accurate quote i have ever read!!!!
The fact that Ian Curtis killed himself is really neither here nor there. He could just as easily *not* have succumbed to his torment and instead went off to be a plumber somewhere, or bricklayer, or whatever. The music and expression of the albums that Joy Division made in this time would be the same. So let's get away from the Ian Curtis cult of morbidity. Please.
When I first heard this song I thought that bass riff was the corniest shit I ever listened to but I kept on listening to it anyway. Whenever I describe how I started listening to JD it feels like I'm talking about how I met a fucking wife or girlfriend.
Am i the only one who finds it a bit ironic, yet cruel Ian's last line ever as a member of Joy Division was "Don't ever fade away" and look what he did to himself....
i dont understand why in all the videos of joy division shows the guy from the movie.. i saw the movie is greate but why dont shows the real ian curtis?
sorry for bad english i dont undersand a shit of inglish hehe
@morrisjuan When did music become a competition? Music is art. When you go to a museum do you only look at Picasso? no, you have a whole variety of artists. There are only horrible bands, okay bands, good bands, great bands and legendary bands. There is no "best"
@hotrodder725 Kurt Cobain was a genius & the voice of a genration, some called him the 90's John Lennon! but you may still have a point! just shows how good Ian was!!
@hotrodder725 are you a fucking idiot. Yes joy division are good , but none of their songs match up to the immense passion , melody , and soul that drives each and every one of nirvanas songs , sure 'shes lost control' is a great tune , but it will never match up to anything of 'Nevermind'
@AgeOfOddz Nah they got some good songs, The man who sold the world acoustic is really good and I dont even like Norvana really but to sau they are talentless makes you sound ignorant.
@dethh100 The Man Who Sold the World is not their song, its David Bowie´s and their rendition was so extremely basic and simple that anyone could have done it. I am not ignorant and Nirvana certainly are talentless.
@AgeOfOddz did kurt cobain steal your lunch money or something, why so angry. Maybe your just trying to be different, but they certainly aren't talentless. Joy Division are wonderful and i love them, but they didn't and still don't have the impact Nirvana does..and there is a reason for that.
@neonbible08 The "impact"? If by "impact" you mean number of bands who are influenced by you and choose to follow in your footsteps then you are extremely wrong. Just ask bands like The National, Interpol, The Editors and The Killers and hundreds of others where they got their sound from. Joy Division is one of the most influential band of all time, what about Nirvana and grunge? They died the moment Kurt took his own life.
@hotrodder725 Don't really know why this comment has so many thumbs up. You're right there is no comparrison, they are 10 years apart, from different continents and part of different genres and movments and with very different approaches to music.

@xheyitsowenjx maybe that's one of the reasons he killed himself. Maybe he didn't want it to get huge and distorted or sellout as popular music so often does. "I hate fuckin' David Bowie. All he'd ever do was sing about how you should die when you're 25. Know how old he is? He's fuckin' 30-29, something. He's a liar." Anyway, irregardless, awesome song.
I'm 15.I love Joy Division. And It really sickens me to see overproduced shit in the charts when good music like this doesn't get a chance. RIP Ian Curtis.
@ThePandoricasWitness I know what you mean! Joy Division have been my favourite band for about 3 years and I'm 17, how can anyone prefer Justin Beiber, i have no idea x
