for those who don't know about FTBD, everything is improvised by following cues from whichever dancer takes the lead. it is very smooth and beautiful to watch. had the chance to attend a seminar with them. they are patient teachers and the performance got a standing ovation.

who created ATS ? some say its carolena and some say its Jamila Salimpour...?

Jamila Salimpour started Tribal in the sense that she started a more folkloric style in the early 60s. She was also one of the first people to teach bellydance in the US at all.

Carolena and FCBD started ATS with the group improv in the mid 80s.

ATS is a dance format created by Carolena Nericcio... Tribal influence and elements were brought by Jamila, but the ATS format is Carolena's.

I usually prefer solo performances, but this is an exception, what an exception, or should I say exceptional. Beautiful in every respect: performance, performers - all three, costumes, especially the headdress, makeup, music, choreography, videography. As close to perfection as one, I mean three, can get.

Carolena, Thank you thank you thank you for letting this be posted. You gave rise to a whole generation of amazing dancers. I well remember when I first saw your work early on and it totally erased the tacky, burlesque-like belly dance images from my past and replaced it with this gorgeous graceful fluidity. Thank you all for bringing out tribal style!

This clip is from the new version of Vol. 1 Tribal Basics. Carolena Nericcio in the black choli, Rina Rall in the green sleeves, and Karen Gehrman in red sleeves. She doesn't look nervous to me, she'd been with FCBD a while when this was made. The zill pattern is the standard alternating RLR RLR.

Since this comes from ones of their instructional DVDs/videos, you may want to check with Carolena that it's ok to post it to youtube.

It's most likely the standard pattern that FCBD uses: RLR RLR RLR RLR
