Oh my God, I did not see that coming. Then I looked back at the movie, and saw clues all over the place. Like in the morning when the younger guy does his magic trick, and the way the older guy looks at him. When the older guy sees his wife coming, he quickly moves to the other side of the counter, and the younger guy moves to face the older guy. Also, just the way the two looked at each other throughout the whole entire movie.

They were able to pass it off as her suicide note since it was in her handwriting, and because she signed it. After this, they went out to pick mushrooms. He was supposed to poison her after she wrote the note, but he failed to in his first attempt.

I really think that this film was driven more by character study than plot, and the idea of people never being the same on the surface as they are deep inside. The ending is the twist, and while a bit of a cop-out, it demonstrates the shock value life provides every day.

@DHSNAKE I'm pretty sure the mushroom the guy fed her at the end was the poison one. From what I can tell Dave and him were lovers before they 'met' on the road and were plotting the whole time to kill Alexa. The note he asked her to write was used as her suicide note and he suduced her so she would trust him when he fed her the mushroom. No one would suspect because she knows which mushrooms are poison. It was probably for her money. Hope this helps.
@DHSNAKE The film is a bit open-ended, so it's really hard to actually answer. Most of it is up for interpretation. :)
1. I assume that they gradually fell in love. Rickman's character seemed a bit dimissive of Reedus' character at first but he gradually warmed to him, to the point where, as the ending would indicate, they fell in love.
2. I think this is a plot hole, honestly. I assume she was supposed to eat the red one but reached for the afrodicia mushroom and people failed to notice.
@jazzandmint his dismissive attitude towards Reedus was a rue, a ploy so she'd feel more for him and not suspect anything....right at the beginning we see him forcing her to keep an eye on the road so it would be "she" who noticed him laying on the dirt and nt the other way round!
@DHSNAKE P.S.- 1) Yes I believe that they knew each other beforehand. That's why he slows the car down, honks the horn (if you notice, when he does that she asks "What is wrong with you"), and tells her to watch the road. 2) She didn't take the aphrodisiac mushroom. Remember, earlier in the film, when he practices sleight of hand to feed her the aphrodisiac mushroom? Well, the next and final time he does it again, while she's distracted by him kissing her. @DHSNAKE I had read about the movie and knew that I had to look for clues so all my senses were awake... I saw this just once & as i've been thinking about it a lot I think the reson why Alan reverts to British accent time and again is because all the time he was pretending to be someone he wasnt (hence the american accent) whereas the wife was comfortable in her skin (hence the brit accent all along) so whenever he was emotionally charged he would subconsciously speak in his original accent.

I think it's so genius how they made a main character with no name, it's so different. I really wish I hadn't watched the ending first (it was by accident >.<) cos that way i could have a massive freak out moment at the end lol.
@mrsoratanaka often times, writers name a character for the simple reason that it is easier to write a name than "the young man" etc. Also if they were to call this character by the description, it makes it harder in later scenes, when there is a "young man" to determine who is who.
@tunples something about her crush on a yale guy, which didnt work out.... see she is attracted to the young guy and the movie narrates it through her dream in which this young guy was wearing a yale sweater. The sweater is symbolic of her unmentioned attraction.... that's what I think! also she knows its wrong so she sees David with an axe... guess that's why she tries to step out of the young guy's advances... hope it helps!
i don't understand whats about the blood (?) at Alan's mouth (at the right side) and the blood (again:?) at the mouth of the young man (left side). Has anyone understood this and could explain this to me please?
@philopator7 just one addition: of course i do see that the young man had this blood at his face because he was kissing with David, but why had David it after waking up?
It's the kind of thing where you have your favorite male actor(who is EXTREMELY sexy) be in a movie where his character is gay, and you don't want to beleive it and it just seems horrible and twisted and you don't want to beleive it. But, then, you have to see it as David having a gay lover, not Alan. And the script was written long before it was even decided that he would play that character. That's the thing that always gets me.

I love this movie. So twisted. I don't understand the ending, though. I feel like the love between David and the young dude just came out of nowhere. Maybe that's just me. The only thing that led me to believe anything was going on between them was when the guy thanked David for giving him a blanket in the middle of the night.

From what I can tell Dave and him were lovers before they 'met' on the road and were plotting the whole time to kill Alexa. The note he asked her to write was used as her suicide note and he suduced her so she would trust him when he fed her the mushroom. No one would suspect because she knows which mushrooms are poison. It was probably for her money. Hope this helps.

@DHSNAKE The film is a bit open-ended, so it's really hard to actually answer. Most of it is up for interpretation. :)
1. I assume that they gradually fell in love. Rickman's character seemed a bit dimissive of Reedus' character at first but he gradually warmed to him, to the point where, as the ending would indicate, they fell in love.
2. I think this is a plot hole, honestly. I assume she was supposed to eat the red one but reached for the afrodicia mushroom and people failed to notice.

@jazzandmint his dismissive attitude towards Reedus was a rue, a ploy so she'd feel more for him and not suspect anything....right at the beginning we see him forcing her to keep an eye on the road so it would be "she" who noticed him laying on the dirt and nt the other way round!

That's why he slows the car down, honks the horn (if you notice, when he does that she asks "What is wrong with you"), and tells her to watch the road. 2) She didn't take the aphrodisiac mushroom. Remember, earlier in the film, when he practices sleight of hand to feed her the aphrodisiac mushroom? Well, the next and final time he does it again, while she's distracted by him kissing her. @DHSNAKE I had read about the movie and knew that I had to look for clues so all my senses were awake... I saw this just once & as i've been thinking about it a lot I think the reson why Alan reverts to British accent time and again is because all the time he was pretending to be someone he wasnt (hence the american accent) whereas the wife was comfortable in her skin (hence the brit accent all along) so whenever he was emotionally charged he would subconsciously speak in his original accent.

I think it's so genius how they made a main character with no name, it's so different. I really wish I hadn't watched the ending first (it was by accident >.<) cos that way i could have a massive freak out moment at the end lol.

@mrsoratanaka often times, writers name a character for the simple reason that it is easier to write a name than "the young man" etc. Also if they were to call this character by the description, it makes it harder in later scenes, when there is a "young man" to determine who is who.

@tunples something about her crush on a yale guy, which didnt work out.... see she is attracted to the young guy and the movie narrates it through her dream in which this young guy was wearing a yale sweater. The sweater is symbolic of her unmentioned attraction.... that's what I think! also she knows its wrong so she sees David with an axe... guess that's why she tries to step out of the young guy's advances... hope it helps!

It's the kind of thing where you have your favorite male actor(who is EXTREMELY sexy) be in a movie where his character is gay, and you don't want to beleive it and it just seems horrible and twisted and you don't want to beleive it. But, then, you have to see it as David having a gay lover, not Alan. And the script was written long before it was even decided that he would play that character. That's the thing that always gets me.

I just posted this on the part where it actually happens, but one of the clues that no one seems to have pointed out yet is that when Alan Rickman's character shouts "Honey!" while the wife and Norman are talking on the sofa, Norman looks up. It's such a subtle touch, but I love it.

I love this movie. So twisted. I don't understand the ending, though. I feel like the love between David and the young dude just came out of nowhere. Maybe that's just me. The only thing that led me to believe anything was going on between them was when the guy thanked David for giving him a blanket in the middle of the night.

Let's clear things up...Alan Rickman, to my knowledge, is not gay. He has been with his SO for a very long time and I don't think that's changing anytime soon. His character however...Is gay or at the very least bisexual. Alan is an actor. It's silly to think that just because he kisses a guy in a movie it means he's gay. Really? That would mean Daniel Radcliffe is a wizard and Alan is dead after being killed by Nagini!
