the ben kweller contreversay is old news brah...idgaf about all dat drama love the song..right about now felt like a album to me i bought it like five times..
I got this from no one, been a Talib Kweli fan since him and Mos Def formed Black Star. Its sad that people have to be brought by other means in order to listen to good music, back in the days, i remember that good music was brought to us. Those days are over now, I guess its best to be brought than to not be brought at all.
nothing brought me here but the luv of point of view. no wonder Lauren never show and this shows that BET or watever is a menace to true art. Talib seems to be a good friend and if she doesn't notice than somethings up with her. Talib one of the truest and Lupe seeming to be like a fake ass Muslim forgetting where he come from trying make cheap money. they barely knew he was alive till "the show goes on". i knew him since i was 8yrs now i'm 15. B.O.B gone take his spot and beyond
@PeachesOhoulihan In my opinion, songs like these with "recycled hooks" should be required to list whoever they took the hook from in the title of the song. For example, "Ms. Hill by Talib Kweli feat. Ben Kweller," just like rappers are "featured" on other pop artist's tunes.
@dancollinsandapiano eh, it depends on the amount of recycling. this is original enough for me to not require that, but, for example, "Opposite of Kids" by Chiddy Bang should definitely have that
@KobraCola The song was based around his hook... how shouldn't Kweller's name at LEAST be mentioned in the title? The hook that he wrote makes up about 80 total seconds of this song, over 1/3 of the tune. People need to know who wrote the song they're singing...
@dancollinsandapiano Well that's a matter of opinion, I think Kweli expertly mixes in the hook and changed it enough that I had no idea it was Ben Kwellers song, it sounds nothing like him. Plus it's about notability of the original song too, when Kanye samples some really obscure 80's rock band, he doesn't need to be like "oh hey guys, I'm sampling King Crimson's 21st Century Schizoid Man by the way"
@dancollinsandapiano It's not white and black like that but I do think obscurity should be a factor. Sampling a random afrobeat artist from the 70s is different from sampling the new MGMT people that have already been bought 5 million times. 1 is obviously just trying to play off the popularity of another song. If u want 2 recognize every song that resulted in another piece of music, youd have 2 reference every piece even remotely close 2 the piece of music that someone mightve heard in the past
@KobraCola I'm just saying, when it's blatant (as it is in this case), it's not hard to credit the original composer. "Talib Kweli feat. Kweller -Ms.Hill with lyrics" is how this should read, at least on the record co's version. It shouldn't be that much of a problem- they know whose song it is...
@dancollinsandapiano Well another thing to consider is that usually a "(feat.)" credit implies that the other artist actually was there when the track was made and contributed to it in some way in the studio. Just because you sampled some other artist doesnt mean you "feature" them, it means you flipped their song and changed it for rapping purposes.
People who call Lauryn Hill a Racist and she made that so called Statement: Where is the proof? Do you listen to what anyone says? She was ALLEGEDLY said a statement by a Caller on a Howard Stern Show. The Media dragged it out to make an issue about it. If I was able to call on the David Letterman and say Eminem hates all Asian people, would it be true? I mean the Media could drag it out make it appear true, but it doesn't mean its true in anyway
I like the beat to this song but I don't understand Talib Kweli's emphasis on the idea of, and I quote, "black power". Shouldn't all races be considered equal? I guess "people power" doesn't sound as cool and won't make as much money.
@MaximusTCR I believe he is referring to the power of a black woman in this predicament, Lauryn Hill, as it is relevant in the song. Lauryn Hill is a powerful black woman, and I believe he wanted to emphasis the fact that she IS a black woman.
@winzle1 Has it ever crossed your mind that maybe the industry, which wants her so much as she would make them untold amounts of money, could possibly want just the money and not the messages she puts across. You know the one's about there being a Babylon and how the industry is slowly raping our minds. I mean this is all just a thought, but it seems like it's the most logical reason.
@hempster92 I doubt she made the comment. I don't think you fully understood my previous comment. If you believe everything the media says then...what can I say really, because if you do believe the media then there's is nothing I can say for you to think about this issue logically.
