I was at this show. Saw this band three times that weekend. Never heard of them before then. Went on Friday to see them at Ackerman Student Union at UCLA, just for something to do, and it was only five bucks to get in. The next day I bought tickets to the show at the Roxy. Then on Sunday was the free show on the steps at UCLA. This Super 8 footage is the only recording that I am aware of. It even looks a little like the Zapruder film. I even spotted myself and my roommate Eric at the 1:36 mark.
It's true: Everything is on YouTube. I was just thinking, "I wonder if anyone else was at that show at Janss Steps. I think I ditched high school to go to it. The opening act was The Dirty Angels ("Buzz Buzz"). One of the great memories of my adolescence, that show.
This is one of the most creative uses of old music film I've seen. A great record to have in your collection, and a great way of sharing it. Many thanks. Do you have the t-shirt at 1:50 btw?
I was there too! The concert was in front of Royce Hall (not sure if that's spelled correctly). We drove up from CSULB on whim and had a great time. Great memories.
Rare footage? That's putting it mildly. Who knew this existed? Talking Heads at Janss Steps, UCLA, 1978, for FREE! That was a great day - look at how blue the sky is. But every day was like that, remember the drought? Good times, great memories. Oh yeah, that's me with the blonde hair in the extreme lower right at 1:37.
Thanks for digging this up, remixing and posting. You"re Awesome!
Hey Chemistryset1-I clearly state that this footage was shot on Silent Super 8 and synched to a Heads song. The images ARE live. Thanks for your comments
dude that ain't live - but awesome footage regardless !
would've liked to have seen DB and co. leaving their tour van normally, i.e. not backwards, but maybe that's just nit-picking - thanks for sharing :-)
You've unearthed a wee gem here J.V. I think there's a photo or two on the sleevenotes of "Sand in the vaseline/ Popular favorites" taken from this gig. Thanks for posting..brings back many happy memories of my favourite band of all time.

I was there, too!
A very fun day. There was a totally non-Talking Heads-type band opening for them. DIrty Angels, maybe?
