Very nice video, thanks for sharing. I have a question, on (1:24) it says "Use any noise you wish, but always feed for that noise even if the dog does not look at you.", I'd like to know why feed/praise always and not only when the dog looks, since what I want is his/her attention when I make that noise.
That is a great ? and the reason that you always feed is because you want the dog to know that that kissy noise means food is coming. Especially in the beginning. I have clients feed for the kissy noise 100% for the first month and it is not until then that they do not have to feed every time. However, I want the dog to know that the kissy noise means he gets a treat. It is similar to the click as you want it to always have meaning.
When teaching the kissy noise, you want it to always have meaning so feed even if the dog does not look at you. Soon the dog will always look at you when you make the noise.
Now I know why you especially like me getting Vela's attention with "kissy" noises.
;-)
I actually wanted a couple of such posiitive interrupters in our repertoire and added this a couple of weeks ago. I still use the word "nein" when around people though. They think it's a correction and marvel at how well behaved Vela is, Vela knows it as "stop what I'm doing and come to Papa". Especially important to other people who may not like or are afraid of dogs to hear a command they understand.
Another great video, Pamela. Look forward to the entire series. I'm also sending on your agility tips to friends who are really into agility. Those are great, as well.
Pamela, this is soooooo very important. Thank you so much for teaching it! I think you plan for the worst, but hope for the best. You just don't ever know when it could mean life or death! Thank you! Oh, Isabelle did so well at this! Good girl! lol
thanks for starting these vids! I've already got my puppy to look at me when I make a kissy noise..most of the time! We used to use "come" but we used it ALL the time and he wouldn't come. We now use "here" ONLY when we know he will come. If I don't know, I go and get him or yell in a high voice "pup pup pup pup pup!" That way I'm not ruining my cue for when I REALLY need him to come. I'm looking forward to the next few videos.
I love it! You are totally on the right track! I yell pup pup pup too! You are so smart to not poison your new cue of "here". I use that one as well. Thanks for the awesome comment!
If your dog never comes when called you must condition this so that your dog responds to the kissy noise every time. If you think that the distractions are too much for him, then just go get your dog. Also, you might want to think about changing your recall cue (word) as your dog has learned that he does not have to come when called, but there is hope! Keep working with your dog!! If you have any questions send me a message! The key is to have FUN with your dog!
Awesome video Pam!!! Such an important behavior! I love the how you got those transitions (I will need a tutorial from you on how to use the Imovie you are using :) )
Hey Emily, THANKS! That means a lot coming from you! You are the QUEEN of YouTube videos! I only wish mine were as good as yours! I would be happy to give you a tutorial in imovie! You would not have a problem with it, as it is a breeze to learn! See ya soon! Let's get together and work with the pups this week! Ciao!
The written instructions say to make the kissy noise, click for eye contact, THEN move away and feed. It looks like you're moving away immdiately after feeding, not between the click and the treat? Did I miss something? :) Thanks for any clarification!
No, you did not miss anything. I just wish I had a dog that did not already know the kissy noise to show how it is done. Sometimes when I do videos with my own dogs, it is so hard to show the behavior that I want because they are already doing it. So, I try to give the written instructions and hope that people will get the idea. Really it is the kissy noise to just get the head turn, but my dogs are so fast at giving that eye contact that it looks like that is what I am clicking. Thanks!
Maybe do it outside ?!

@tehTantrum Why? The best place to start ANY training is in the house where there are no distractions and your dog can actually learn best!

This will be a good video to help me and my dog! My dog doesn't always come when called, it will depend on the level of distractions and her mood!
