  • @abracadabranque Indeed, silliness always astonishes but for sure always could be avoided... with a tiny little bit of intelligence...

  • @amlirco Ton intelligence?

    Salutations respectueuses.

  • @abracadabranque Now this is a wise thought. I couldn't say it better: Le mépris est l'arme des faibles... You have my total support on that.

As for my French, please refer your discontent to Google Translator (sorry, I don't speak any French), otherwise you could try writing in English or Bulgarian.

  • BRAVA!!!!!!!!! ES MARAVILLOSA! TUVE LA SUERTE DE ACTUAR CON ELLA EN DOS OPERAS , EN EL CORO, CLARO Y SIEMPRE TERMINE LLORANDO, CON LOS PELOS DE PUNTA, ES UNA GRAN INTERPRETE, SE DEJA LA PIEL, PONE TODA LA CARNE EN EL ASADOR, Y TRANSMITE TODOS, ABSOLUTAMENTE TODOS LOS SENTIMIENTOS DE SUS PERSONAJES AL PUBLICO CON UNA FACILIDAD ASOMBROSA.BRAVA!!!!

  • She is just perfect

Grande Raina

  • I agree with EmmyKami. RAINA KABAIVANSKA has to be one of the most gifted sopranos of our time. Her performance of Madama Butterfly at the Arena de Verona is beyond words to describe. Unfortunately, I wasn't at Verona to see the live open air performance, but I have the DVD of it--super quality both audio & video and you see lots of closeups of RAINA. Her most subtle facial expression, hand gestures, eye movements, must have been so craftily planned--it was all executed perfectly. Live RAINA!

  • just as her other Puccini roles, the completeness and simplicity of delivery is breathtaking - this is simply... unsurpassable!

  • @branko1b : The voice is ordinary and small, and not beautiful at all and there is no sincerity in her interpretattion she is artificial.

    Dissapointing and tasteless

  • @caleche78 i don't know where you get your sense of interpretation from - you sound like someone form the "C or T clan(s)" (?)

artificial?? it's an opera, it is not happening for real, you know - she simply and most clearly pronounces every word, on the right note -strangely, this seems to be to much to expect from the most most renown divas

a lack inadequate screaming, cover-up-vibrato, and general 'muffling' (emotions?!) doesn't make voice small

your notion of artificiality is artificial

  • @caleche78 you obviously are listening to a different video!

  • @caleche78 You don"t know nothing about ópera. She is one of the best. Before you say anything about her, try to see her past

  • That Bulgarian lady, Raina Kabaivanska, was 49 (!) years old when she performed the role of that poor Cio-Cio San....."chapeau", ik doe mijn hoed af. ( I put off my hat).

  • Please, tell me where to find this DVD!

  • What a nice service to put the lyrics as subtitles.

  • Raina Kaivanska, buena.

  • In comparaison with Tebaldi I would say that the voice is also beautifull,BUT Kabaïvanska is far more dramatic and "actress" than the "cold" Tebaldi !

  • @motardbear15 I disagree Tebaldi wasn't 'cold'... indeed she was suited for some roles more than others interpretation-wise, eg she sounded too naive for some of Verdi's heroines like Violetta, but as Butterfly (which is perhaps the epitome of naivety and innocence, purity in a character), she is superb. Also as Mimi.

  • Gran-Diosa!!!!

  • her role..

  • My favorite singer is Tebaldi. and I often dream of what it was like to hear her in the theatre. I was holidaying late in the season, and unsuspectingly went to . Lucca the Teatro del Ciglio. The Opera was Butterfly ,the soprano Raina Kabaivanska .that night is seared on my memory till the day I die.what Raina did on that stage was the most moving perfomance I have ever witnessed at times the whole audience , mid scene would be standing applauding in tears .without doubt the greatest I ever saw !

.... l'ASPETTO.... mammamia!

  • Grande Raina , ottime dizione , interpretazione , mimica e grande e bellissima chiarissima voce !

  • Maravilhoso !

  • splendida!!

  • Sublime

  • Bravo! Great touch in the end: While the audience cheers exultantly, Kabaivanska takes the character in an unexpected direction: She offers us a mix of sorrow and doubt in her expression. For the first time, this supposedly "innocent" Japanese wife reveals a depth which the delusional ingenue of Western imagination could never evoke.

  • It is not a song, it is an aria.

  • 'aria' being italian for 'air', which is a type of song...

  • i love her when she imaginarily pictures pinkerton as a little dot climbing uphill lol i saw this dvd and sometimes she is funny as hell

  • Try the Renee Fleming studio recording posted here.

I admire RK, but I find the Puccini roles suite her better. I was lucky to hear her live as Elisabeta in Don Karlo, with Gyaurov !!

  • That way should be every woman in the wolrd like Rayna Kabaivanska!

  • For some reasons, her vibrato really annoys the heck out of me, but other than that I couldn't find any other better Butterfly, not one.

  • Que interpretación tan conmovedora!!! snif!!!

  • great interpretation!

    molto commovente!

  • I'm afraid you're mistaken. You're missing out on a true artist. It's RAINA KABAIVANSKA, probably THE greatest soprono of our time today.

  • A Diva, as great as Raina, is NOT able to "scream" loud or sing "bold", as per some opinions here! She does know how to gracefully project her voice and cover the immense space of Arena di Verona. Thus, her amazing notes reach the most remote corner in the audience. But in moments, when the character demands, she is able to produce the most ethereal, gentle and moving pianissimi - one of a kind. Kabaivanska has thousand of different voices within her Voice. Thank you, EmmyKami for posting this!

  • The Voice of a Music Philosopher, as great as RAINA, is Plasma that gains different forms and colours with different states of Soul-Mind of the character. Her Voice can be anything and can multiply the effects staying truthful to the Music, Composer, Poetry and The Idea.

  • @EmmyKami

not "probably" - She is the greatest soprano :)

  • the romanian television programmed the arena di verona performance we were talking about! as i said: raina is too bold, she displays too much force from the very beginning, for such a delicate character - i mean i don t like her acting... Director Frederic MitterandStarring: Ying Huang, Richard Troxton; PLEASE watch this one!:) still, raina... what a voice!

  • Your idea for Butterfly is too confined within the margines of the Japonese girl in any sense. To understand Raina's interpretation you need to go much more further and deeper; I'm afraid you don't even imagine. So your advice is quite ridiculous. Believe me, I don't have any intention of offending you.

  • :)i don't even understand what are you talking about. it is an old discussion with EmmyKami, che c entri tu? So, it's well grounded (confined) thеn. NO offence!

  • I'm sorry, but I'll have to agree what Amlirco said. For Raina, you DO have to dig much deeper to understand her art of this character. Everyone has their own interpretation of the character. If you were to watch this whole performance, I would hope you would see what I mean.

  • too much wobble in voice, sounds like an old soprano, voice is not consistant, no diction,

weird frazing, considering dificulty of the role give her max of ***

  • phrasing?

So please, grace us with your opinion of the best version of this great song. It appears we all have much to learn, and you're the only one who can teach us.

It appears you don't listen to opera for the pure joy of it, but to find the technical error in it and to criticize, surely you can lead us to the "perfect" performance.

  • If you dislike her rendition so much, then why is it on your list of favorite videos?

  • Here's my critique of your comment Comescritto:

Misses the point. Nitpicks. No feeling for the scene or the

music. No appreciation for dramatic touches, or expressiveness. No heart.

  • you are the best

  • EmmyKami,

Thank you for producing this. As a redneck from Texas, I saw my first opera up close, because I was in it (back in the days when they allowed supernumeraries from the visiting cities - they now charge for it).

    This is my favorite auria,

    Thanks again

  • Mika Mori does the best version of this song that I have ever heard. If you haven't seen it, I recommend checking it out. :) This version is pretty great though.

  • i like mika mori too, lei ha la ristretezza necessaria, la sottile ecconomia

  • are you serious? Mika Mori, give me a break:)

Where did you learn to have an opinion like that? Mika Mori-no emotions, off pitch singing, no caracter(She has beautiful voice thou, i agree on that)

  • I didn't "learn" to have an opinion like that. The Mika Mori version moves me to tears. It was an emotional statement. For me, her performance rings true. It seems much more sincere than many of the other singers, I've seen, who are much more concerned with the technical part of the performance than the heart and soul of it. I wasn't saying she is the best singer, and wasn't getting into her ability to sing.

If you care to see the rest of my reply it is posted on your profile.

  • No perfect voice, but very great Butterfly!

  • I'm sure there are many good singers for this role, but she's the best I've heard so far, if you don't mind me saying so. :)

  • Well, I would say this was ONE of the best I've seen. I just watched Tebaldi and it was HORRIBLE (like most of her songs) TO ME!

Leontyne Price is my favorite, Montserrat Cabelle is my favorite also. I would love to hear Jessye Norman sing this!

Raina's acting is good too! Makes a big difference

  • ^Yes, not only is Raina a great singer, she's also a great actress too. :) Such talent!

  • I have had this performance on video for years and it still gets watched on a regular basis.

The voice together with the acting make this a very special performance. How does she stay in character at the end when thousands in the audience are screaming for an encore.

It was indeed filmed at the Arena di Verona and released by Castle Video. Recommended.

  • I don't know how she stays in character afterrwards, good question! I wonder why she cried afterwards? It is totally recommended from me, I literally watch it every day! Mrs. Kabaivanska is trully something! What a voice she has!

  • I bought the video of this particular performance and cast...she delivers a stellar performance throughout the entire thing...she is as amazing an actor as she is a singer!

  • Agreed! :D

  • I noticed that as well, her acting skills are GREAT!

  • Yep, agreed! :D

  • !!!!!the rombo is magnificent!!!!

  • she s too damn european when pointing with the finger but the voice is lol lava like so kami she s not like but still still still great

  • I don't know about her being "too damn European", but she is from Bulgaria. She's great, like you said.:)

  • her ees are a little sharp and she sounds like she needs breath.

  • Yep, agree with that.

  • You're welcome!:)

  • Normally I only cry every ten years or so, but this brings tears every time ...can you tell me where the video is from..is there a DVD or something

  • This from an opera at an outdoor theater in Verona, Italy from around 1983 I think. I actually bought the dvd but it came damaged lol. Do a search on Amazon and you'll probably find it :)

  • There is! Barnes & Noble can order it for you (that's what I did) or you can look on Amazon.

  • extraordinariooooo !!!

  • this is my favorite butterfly tank you ror this video

  • You're welocme.:)

  • Straordinario e meraviglioso, perfetto!

  • thanx :)

  • Welcome.:)

  • she has an amazing voice!!!

  • She does! I'll PM you a link to her official website.:)

  • is it the l'arena di verona performance in 1978? help me please... beautifull voice and acting

  • It was Arena Di Verona, but in 1983.:)

  • Brava. A fantastic Butterfly. Clear, forward-projected sound.

  • You got that right!:) She hits those notes perfectly!

  • I was afraid that the Italian surtitles would want to make me sing along, but not with the fabulous La Kabaivanska singing! Really, a fantastic performance :)

  • Haha. She's quite a performer with her Tosca too!

    Glad ya'll are enjoying this!

  • You're welcome! It gives me chills too everytime I watch it too.:)

  • ^Haha, you're welcome!

  • I'm not breathing properly... I can't... She is overwhelming!!, astonishing!!, wonderful!!

    Thanks!!

  • this is the best recording with the rambo part so loud

  • ^Haha, lol!:D

  • She is absolutely the best butterdly ever! Look at her expression when she runs up at the front at the end. Makes me cry

  • ^I know, she has the best facial expressions for this character!:D And beautiful voice too!:D

  • Mrs. Kabaivanska certainly is a treasure of the opera art. She'll always be my idol forever!:D
