I agree with EmmyKami. RAINA KABAIVANSKA has to be one of the most gifted sopranos of our time. Her performance of Madama Butterfly at the Arena de Verona is beyond words to describe. Unfortunately, I wasn't at Verona to see the live open air performance, but I have the DVD of it--super quality both audio & video and you see lots of closeups of RAINA. Her most subtle facial expression, hand gestures, eye movements, must have been so craftily planned--it was all executed perfectly. Live RAINA!
@caleche78 i don't know where you get your sense of interpretation from - you sound like someone form the "C or T clan(s)" (?)
artificial?? it's an opera, it is not happening for real, you know - she simply and most clearly pronounces every word, on the right note -strangely, this seems to be to much to expect from the most most renown divas
a lack inadequate screaming, cover-up-vibrato, and general 'muffling' (emotions?!) doesn't make voice small
That Bulgarian lady, Raina Kabaivanska, was 49 (!) years old when she performed the role of that poor Cio-Cio San....."chapeau", ik doe mijn hoed af. ( I put off my hat).
In comparaison with Tebaldi I would say that the voice is also beautifull,BUT Kabaïvanska is far more dramatic and "actress" than the "cold" Tebaldi !
@motardbear15 I disagree Tebaldi wasn't 'cold'... indeed she was suited for some roles more than others interpretation-wise, eg she sounded too naive for some of Verdi's heroines like Violetta, but as Butterfly (which is perhaps the epitome of naivety and innocence, purity in a character), she is superb. Also as Mimi.
My favorite singer is Tebaldi. and I often dream of what it was like to hear her in the theatre. I was holidaying late in the season, and unsuspectingly went to . Lucca the Teatro del Ciglio. The Opera was Butterfly ,the soprano Raina Kabaivanska .that night is seared on my memory till the day I die.what Raina did on that stage was the most moving perfomance I have ever witnessed at times the whole audience , mid scene would be standing applauding in tears .without doubt the greatest I ever saw !
.... l'ASPETTO.... mammamia!
Bravo! Great touch in the end: While the audience cheers exultantly, Kabaivanska takes the character in an unexpected direction: She offers us a mix of sorrow and doubt in her expression. For the first time, this supposedly "innocent" Japanese wife reveals a depth which the delusional ingenue of Western imagination could never evoke. L'aspetto, si; ma l'aspetto perche voglio!
The little Japanese woman with the big heart , stoles the hearts of all of us and teaches us also what means " to love " , as only Butterfly could love ...Raina is one of the best Butterfly of our times but i think that if she had less vibrato , would be ideal for this role . Her interpration is perfect , very expressive , she really lives the role !!
A Diva, as great as Raina, is NOT able to "scream" loud or sing "bold", as per some opinions here! She does know how to gracefully project her voice and cover the immense space of Arena di Verona. Thus, her amazing notes reach the most remote corner in the audience. But in moments, when the character demands, she is able to produce the most ethereal, gentle and moving pianissimi - one of a kind. Kabaivanska has thousand of different voices within her Voice. Thank you, EmmyKami for posting this!
The Voice of a Music Philosopher, as great as RAINA, is Plasma that gains different forms and colours with different states of Soul-Mind of the character. Her Voice can be anything and can multiply the effects staying truthful to the Music, Composer, Poetry and The Idea.
the romanian television programmed the arena di verona performance we were talking about! as i said: raina is too bold, she displays too much force from the very beginning, for such a delicate character - i mean i don t like her acting... Director Frederic MitterandStarring: Ying Huang, Richard Troxton; PLEASE watch this one!:) still, raina... what a voice!
Your idea for Butterfly is too confined within the margines of the Japonese girl in any sense. To understand Raina's interpretation you need to go much more further and deeper; I'm afraid you don't even imagine. So your advice is quite ridiculous. Believe me, I don't have any intention of offending you.
:)i don't even understand what are you talking about. it is an old discussion with EmmyKami, che c entri tu? So, it's well grounded (confined) thеn. NO offence!
I'm sorry, but I'll have to agree what Amlirco said. For Raina, you DO have to dig much deeper to understand her art of this character. Everyone has their own interpretation of the character. If you were to watch this whole performance, I would hope you would see what I mean.
So please, grace us with your opinion of the best version of this great song. It appears we all have much to learn, and you're the only one who can teach us.
It appears you don't listen to opera for the pure joy of it, but to find the technical error in it and to criticize, surely you can lead us to the "perfect" performance.

I didn't "learn" to have an opinion like that. The Mika Mori version moves me to tears. It was an emotional statement. For me, her performance rings true. It seems much more sincere than many of the other singers, I've seen, who are much more concerned with the technical part of the performance than the heart and soul of it. I wasn't saying she is the best singer, and wasn't getting into her ability to sing.
If you care to see the rest of my reply it is posted on your profile.
