You see why communism works! Freedom & Democracy DOESN'T WORK! Freedom & Democracy only serves the wealthy. Only the wealthy have freedom YOU DONT!! Just like Rich corperations dont pay taxes,,BUT YOU DO!!! Now if Canada and the U.S had a system like the Soviet Union expos would be still playing ball in Canada now. Its time for people to rise up!!! Fight for the workers rule! CREATE A COMMUNIST WORKERS PARTY!!!
Let's be honest, here: If Bud Selig had wanted the Expos to stay in Montreal, they would still be there. But it wasn't as profitable for Selig's fellow owners, and so off they went.
The irony is, if that Montreal/Miami/Boston merry-go-round hadn't happened, not only would the Expos still have had a chance to stay, but Lee's beloved Red Sox would never have won a World Series, let alone (ah-steroids-choo!) two. So, with all due respect to D.C., another city I like, they should have stayed.
the spaceman knows what he talking about, should have thrown bud under the bus too!!!!!Selig let this happen, remember we must contract teams in 03,pompus ass
It was 1980 that Mike Schmidt screwed the expos not 1981 and Spaceman is also wrong to disparage Claude Brochu. He didn't embezzle salary money...he and the team had no money to pay the players! it tore him to have to trade walker grisson wetteland and hill but he had no choice, they'd have faced bankruptcy if they kept them. same when he had to trade pedro. the money wasn't there. he did everything he could to keep the expos but was daily sabotajed by the expos co-owners who made him look bad
@kingofallwhites yup. Charles Bronfman the then owner of the team couldn't live the a decision he made to pay Carter $16 million for 8 years which was a ridiculous amount in those days so he traded him to the Mets for Hubie Brooks, Mike Fitzgerald, Herm Winningham and Floyd Youmans. As Carter was such a popular player in Montreal it was a big blow to the fans when he left.
The Phillies were not World Champions in 1981.....Schmidt hit that TWO run (not three run) homer in 1980 off Stan Bahnsen.... Rick Monday was NOT a pinch hitter in 1981 he was the starting Right Fielder for the LA Dodgers (not Angels)! This guy knows nothing about baseball!

The baseball left Montreal for one good reason, NO MONEY, NO CANDY, they had no support from local private corporations, only 3000 season tickets sold to them. A small tv contract and a stadium not made for baseball far away from downtown. Also baseball had to compete with a lot of free activities and festivals in summertime. Most of the time, Charles Bronfman lost money and the new owner group from Quebec wasn't interested to invest money to keep the best players.

@gairero It's cold and has echo. It's way too big for a baseball game. It had and still has problems with the roof. 99% chance they would not come back, first of all because right now MLB is looking more to contract rather then expand. The talent has been watered down and with World Series ratings declining the last ten years (besides 2009) it does not make sense to add especially in Montreal (where there is a hardcore fanbase but is much too small to make an impact. Alright, thanks. That makes sense. But to clarify, when you said "Mexico" did you mean New Mexico or Mexico Mexico? Just curious, it'd be real interesting to see an MLB franchise there. Also you mentioned possible to Marlins moving...I heard Charlotte,North Carolina is a possibility. is that true?
Ya the country of Mexico, more specifically Mexico City, and The North Carolina Virginia area is alomost always brought up when teams are looking to move. That region is probably 2nd behind Portland in terms of getting a team

who's talking about their world series?..u were trying to make excuses for their attendence. and i'm told u that u can't, because the only word for it is pathetic..i didn't say or imply anything else about them.
@itzahazylife doesnt really mean shit about attendance u can have good/or bad attendance but the only thing matters is if their good which the marlins generally are and attendance eh not the greatest but on saturdays they drew 40,000 multiple times this past year and their last home games for the 09 season wen they still had a shot for the playoffs were drawing better crowds then the braves who were right with them so wen it comes to important times were there sorry ass hater.
because of the expos, i'm now also a nats fan...but everyday i think about the expos. their stadium, their awesome jerseys...something about it. i miss them so much
Of course i would like my Expos to still be playing in Montréal in a real baseball stadium. But after 1984, the Expos were progressively replaced in the summer by all those festivals. ("Jazz", "Laugh",etc.) It's also easy to get tickets for the Alouettes (CFL football) and the Impact (soccer/football) despite their success on the field over the years. In 2009, people spend mainly for the Canadiens and the stand-up comics who have become hugely popular in Québec for the last 10 years.
I used to go see their games all the time when I lived in Albany, New York. I miss them terribly. The city is great, the games were fun and I loved going into the season with blind optimism, hoping they might finally beat out the Braves for the division.
Man, I would give almost anything to have them back.
The strike killed the Expos really I think they died when they broke up the team with Carter, Dawson, Wallach, Raines, Parrish, Rodgers. Bill Lee quit on the team though I will never forget that day when Vin Scully told told the story where Jim Fanning was looking for him to warm up and he left a note and went to a club and told the manager if you need me I'm at the club. Fanning released him the next day.
I love it. They should have won it in 79 80 and 81. Well guess what, they didn't and people in Montreal and the city of Montreal didn't care about this team untill the last game.
People really gave up in 1998 if you look at the attendance.
Game average for:
1979 26,000+ and over league average
1980 27 and over l.a.
1981 28 and over l.a.
1982 28 and over l.a.
1983 28 and over l.a.
then they'll struggle in the following years remaining under the league average but not doing that bad either.
From 1984 to 1991 > 19K+, 18, 14, 22, 18, 22, 16, 11. then a rebirth with the prospects from 92-97 with 20K+, 20, 22, 18, 19, 18 and the downfall 98-2004 between 7-12K+.
and what happened in 1997 that pissed us fans off? Pedro was traded to Boston.
You would associate yourself to Larry Walker but then he'd leave and then to Wetteland but then he'd leave and then to Hill but then he'd leave, getting almost always a handful of spare change in return.
Add to this a sport that never allowed salary caps to regulate the money aspect + internal mismanagement from co-owners never seing eye to eye + bad stadium location with a faulty retractable roof + Selig wanting us out at all cost + a local government not wanting to get involved because of oversized deficit + small market to begin with and you have a team that's bound to move out if it doesn't win, finally, yes, because people don't show up anymore... get the picture?
@seby127 Montreal, a small market??? Are you kidding? There are around 4 million people in the Montreal area, without counting many fans that came from outer regions like Ottawa, Quebec City, Vermont and Upstate New York... Montreal is a big market.
@Hutt1994 I know it's only sports, but the strike of '94 is one of my most painful memories. For once they had a substantial lead on the Braves, and looked ready to take it all. I haven't watched many baseball games since the Expos folded.
Wonder what the story was with the Bronfman/Carter comments. Maybe it was about the clubhouse purge for drugs? Obviously Lee thinks that was overblown and destroyed team chemistry??
The 1994 strike hurt the team very badly. It caused attendance to dwindle and the team to lose fans. That why they moved to DC in 2005. Montreal will get a MLB team pretty soon by expansion or relocation hopefully the Nationals will moved back to Montreal because it will be a total failure in D.C. like the two Senators teams. Washington D.C. is a city of failures of baseball franchises.
C-Gary Carter..1B-Tony Perez..2B-Jose Vidro..SS-Orlando Cabrera..3B-Tim WallachLF-Tim Raines..CF-Andre DawsonRf-Ellis Valentine(because he had the arm to gun anyone out)..SP-Steve Rogers,,RP-John Wetteland.....Love The Spaceman
Frenchmen seperatists killed the Expos, who else? Stinnkin, dinkin, frenchmen lieu lieu esti pepsi and that welfare olympic stadium area, stadium should havve been downtown in the west side
I'm 40 and live in NJ, but I vividly remember the late 70's Expos team, where they could have knocked off the Bucs, then the Phils in those two years. Then in the strike year of 81, didn't they go to the second round of the playoffs that year, and lose to the Dodgers in the NLCS? In that other strike year of 1994, didn't they have the BEST record in the majors? Jees, a lot of heartaches. I am very sorry things went the way they did.
the expos had and sgtill does have the nicest and sickest logo in all of sports the most meaningfull the most original u name it. The fan base was horrible yeh i agree i remember going to buy tickets at the booth just b4 the game started thats how bad it was but to say it was just the fan base that killed them u have to be a pathetic fool to think that. And to say canada doesnt deserve a sports team is completly foolish the bills in toronto atacted 52 000 fans basically sold out stadium
And where did the Expos go? Oh yeah, to D.C., the capital of America that invented baseball and tried to sell it to Canada. Son, that market has FAILED TWICE in baseball franchises. From what it looks like it will fail again.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
4,000 attendance. That is fucking pathetic. An absolute disgrace to professional sports. You fucking canadiens dont ever deserve a sports team and you Montreal shits dont deserve to complain at all.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
lol what kind of excuse is that?
the "dickwads" were just professionals trying not to keep losing billions of dollars because of the non-existant fan base, so they were forced to resort to moving to an ACTUAL FAN BASE.
Netsfan, a fan base in Washington? HAH, how many teams has washington had now? this team isn't going to be any different than the last. It's going to die
Brochu made a commercial suicide in the 90's by selling Walker,Deshields,Hill.... those guy after been sell tell that they were ready to accept less money to stay in Montreal so Brochu think selfishly without taking care of is star player minding and now the Expos are gone ...
Actually the Deshields deal was a good move (Pedro Martinez). But you're right; the dismantling of the '94 team was one of the true sports tragedies of all time.
Loria and Samson are the biggest franchise killer of sports history but the MLB killed the Expos by dealing with those crooks. They could have saved the Expos. Loria and Samson only wanted to make money out of it and had no interest to keep the team in Montreal and the MLB helped them. Loria and Samson are the sons of the MLB bitch.
I miss those summer nights listening to my Expos.. the day they let was the last time I cared for baseball, and no, the Toronto Blue Fags are NOT Canada's team.
Amen brother. I haven't watched a full nine inning regular season game since we lost the 'spos. This year I haven't even had enough interest to watch a full playoff game. Ive always hated the Jays, but when the Expos left I tried so hard to like them, I really did, I mean I loved ball soooo much; I just couldn't do it. I'd sit there trying to convince myself I wanted them to win, but I always felt so much better when they lost... it was hopeless.
I LOVE the EXPOS. I still love them. I hate every single one of those owners Bill Lee mentioned. And I HATE Bud Selig. I hate what MLB did to our Expos. I wear my Expos cap, jersey and jacket to the ballpark. It has been so many season without my beloved Expos who I rooted for since 1969. This season I'll root for the Padres, but it will not be the same. I love baseball but I HATE the afoementioned men did to the Expos and especially the Expos fans.

Why is it that Montrealers love to knock Toronto franchises, when they've all been more successful than Montreal's? Oh yes, we also have an NBA team and will possibly get an NFL team in the next few years.
Roberta (ex-Montrealer who attended over 500 Expos games in Mtl., LA., SF & San Diego)
Toronto more succesful than Montreal? You had better check your Stanley Cup count lately? as for the Raptors, they have the same number of championships as Montreal : Zilch ! better stick to your soap operas!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Did I mention hockey? I'm talking generalities: Hockey team, NBA team, MLB team, CFL team, possible NFL team in the hot too distant future. What does Montreal have? A hockey team...a football team that has left town, 2-3 times, an MLB team that is permanently gone.
Soap operas? Are you a fool, or do you just write like one?
Yep... he's dead on. Imagine how different things would be if any one of those seasons (79, 80, and 81) had panned out differently. He missed '94, though. Another World Series Championship snatched away by fate and the 'powers that be.'
BROCHU , LORIA/SAMSON AND THE MLB KILLED THE EXPOS OVER THE YEARS. The players strike in 1994 and the firesales with the Expos players each years made fans quit following the team. LORIA/SAMSON even stopped having tv and radio broadcasts so that there are even less fans , they threw our best manager Felipe Alou out of the team and kept putting AAA players in the team.
AS a Montrealer i must say its a godamn shame the expos left montreal and i miss them, does anybody think with a big enough demand, the expos would return?
The real killer is they have the balls in Washington, to post Welcome Home on the left field wall in their new Stadium with a Nationals logo, they might be on their 3rd try. But really down deep inside the that team was born in Montreal, It's the Expo's & that's it''s real home, where it belongs...
Well, the Brochu book is certainly arguable.....he's painted in a bit of a better light than he should be...remember he wrote it. Anyway.....damn...I miss my Spos

Man, I would give almost anything to have them back.
proudtobleedblue 2 years ago 3
The strike killed the Expos really I think they died when they broke up the team with Carter, Dawson, Wallach, Raines, Parrish, Rodgers. Bill Lee quit on the team though I will never forget that day when Vin Scully told told the story where Jim Fanning was looking for him to warm up and he left a note and went to a club and told the manager if you need me I'm at the club. Fanning released him the next day.
oleold 2 years ago
I love it. They should have won it in 79 80 and 81. Well guess what, they didn't and people in Montreal and the city of Montreal didn't care about this team untill the last game.
jerrytimes 2 years ago
People really gave up in 1998 if you look at the attendance.
Game average for:
1979 26,000+ and over league average
1980 27 and over l.a.
1981 28 and over l.a.
1982 28 and over l.a.
1983 28 and over l.a.
then they'll struggle in the following years remaining under the league average but not doing that bad either.
From 1984 to 1991 > 19K+, 18, 14, 22, 18, 22, 16, 11. then a rebirth with the prospects from 92-97 with 20K+, 20, 22, 18, 19, 18 and the downfall 98-2004 between 7-12K+.
seby127 2 years ago
and what happened in 1997 that pissed us fans off? Pedro was traded to Boston.
You would associate yourself to Larry Walker but then he'd leave and then to Wetteland but then he'd leave and then to Hill but then he'd leave, getting almost always a handful of spare change in return.
seby127 2 years ago
Add to this a sport that never allowed salary caps to regulate the money aspect + internal mismanagement from co-owners never seing eye to eye + bad stadium location with a faulty retractable roof + Selig wanting us out at all cost + a local government not wanting to get involved because of oversized deficit + small market to begin with and you have a team that's bound to move out if it doesn't win, finally, yes, because people don't show up anymore... get the picture?
seby127 2 years ago
@seby127 Montreal, a small market??? Are you kidding? There are around 4 million people in the Montreal area, without counting many fans that came from outer regions like Ottawa, Quebec City, Vermont and Upstate New York... Montreal is a big market.

@Hutt1994 I know it's only sports, but the strike of '94 is one of my most painful memories. For once they had a substantial lead on the Braves, and looked ready to take it all. I haven't watched many baseball games since the Expos folded.

not just 2004, 1994 as well. The expos pretty much died in 1994, even if they moved 10 years later
DJOmnimaga 2 years ago
Wonder what the story was with the Bronfman/Carter comments. Maybe it was about the clubhouse purge for drugs? Obviously Lee thinks that was overblown and destroyed team chemistry??
fosterch 2 years ago
The 1994 strike hurt the team very badly. It caused attendance to dwindle and the team to lose fans. That why they moved to DC in 2005. Montreal will get a MLB team pretty soon by expansion or relocation hopefully the Nationals will moved back to Montreal because it will be a total failure in D.C. like the two Senators teams. Washington D.C. is a city of failures of baseball franchises.

I hope someday they will come back...

Why is it that Montrealers love to knock Toronto franchises, when they've all been more successful than Montreal's? Oh yes, we also have an NBA team and will possibly get an NFL team in the next few years.

BROCHU , LORIA/SAMSON AND THE MLB KILLED THE EXPOS OVER THE YEARS. The players strike in 1994 and the firesales with the Expos players each years made fans quit following the team. LORIA/SAMSON even stopped having tv and radio broadcasts so that there are even less fans , they threw our best manager Felipe Alou out of the team and kept putting AAA players in the team.
