  • Is there a better song? Who am I kiddin this song should be the theme song for the Neo Classical genre and Good music genre :) R.I.P. Randy

  • I agree with rockslovers, and I sure wish I had discovered ozzy a little sooner so I could have seen the old blizzard of ozz with Randy. Ozzy- pay Lee and Bob!!!!!

  • dont think zak has the musical knowledge to play the song acurately, thats why i think he add a lot of those squals to cover his errors

  • It was zakk Cause zak toured constantly with ozzy till he was fired just a while back

  • @mikeawilson55 no it was joe holmes. joe played with ozzy 1995-1998 and once again on the ozzfest 2000 tour. Zakk was busy with other projects at the time

  • When, where, and what tour was this played on?

  • pinch harmonics rule man

    gotta love dat squile

  • Who plays the guitar? Doesn't sound like Zakk, not enough pinch harmonics for Zakk^^

  • @MrHanswurscht666 joe holmes

  • @ozzy554 the worst Ozzy's guitarrist ever

  • Gus G played a part of this song in his solo in Rat Salad during the Scream Tour.

  • Ozzy did not do DOAM live with Randy. Exception.. The Instrumental version of the song was played when the show would begin, it would play as the group came out on stage, nothing more...

  • i can hear ozzy actually feeling sad to sing this song because this is his ultimate memory song with randy.

  • Diary of a Madman is a masterpiece, would love to hear Randy play this one live.

  • zack didn't do those triplets

  • Ozzy sounds even better than the Clarkston show. His voice didn't crack at all on the high notes and it's clear.

  • @cubby3o5 This version is awesome. Almost as good as the studio version.

  • I agree with whoever said they were happy not to have to listen to Zakk's squeal fest. God, if Ozzy only knew that he would sell WAY more albums if he went back to basic production and GOOD players without all the gloss and stuff. I wish he'd play more classics. My dream set list would include Diary, O.T.Mountain, W.F.Darkness, R&R Rebel, K.O.Giants, The U.Sin, K.O.Giant's, P.Mason, No Easy Way Out, 11 Silver, D.M.Down, etc. The rare yet GEMs!!! Yays? Neighs?

  • @patrickthe13th well he has played killer of giants a lot this tour

  • @ozzy554 I know, one of my favorites of all time, I just wish he played it here in MA when he came through. I was shocked to find out that he'd been playing it at other venues. I did, however get to see him play Fire in the Sky, which was unexpected and cool!

  • @patrickthe13th

You included Killer of Giants twice haha. He played that one on this last tour, it was really cool hearing him play that one live last year. I love the setlist you chose but unfortunately many of those songs Ozzy is no longer capable of singing :/

  • @patrickthe13th I think he should do believer, he literally never plays it, and flying high again a bit more

  • OZZY OSBOURNE IS THE BOSS!!!

  • Never understood why he never did this or You Can't Kill Rock And Roll(Probably my favorite) in earlier tours. I'll never forget during either the Diary or Bark at the moon tour, after a particular song, he would shout out "You can't kill rock and roll!" I was so sure he'd do that song, only to get screwed!

  • For the style of guitar is the Zack. I think it was in the 2000.

  • For the style of guitar is the Zack.

  • Randy Died March 19th. 1982.

  • Randy Rhoads died march 20th 1982

  • Has Ozzy ever written his own lyrics? I find it hard to believe that he did....I know Butler did most of it in Sabbath....but what about the solo career?

  • fake, his lips aren't moving!!

  • They didn't play this live because Ozzy couldn't keep in time with those odd time signatures this song uses. He said something "I'm not a fucking Frank Zappa"

  • not true, I saw him with Randy Rhodes in the Omni Atlanta, GA, he hung a midget during the song

  • he did it live in 1982 or 83 with randy rhodes on the Diary of a Madman Tour

  • @strider4u 2000 was the only year he performed this live.

  • @ozzy554 no it wasnt mate he did it in the 80's too iv got it on a cassette which belongs to my dad if i can find it il up it on ere its amazin

  • @ozzy554 i saw him do this song in 97 with holmes

  • @ozzy554 Was always curious why Randy never performed Diary live. Any ideas?? Easily one of his best tunes.

  • @DiamondDEK The only theory was with Ozzy at the height of his substance abuse back then he couldn't master the time changes and other elements of Diary live so they scrapped it during rehersals of the first couple of shows. Pity, this would have been Randy's live masterpiece.

  • @strider4u no they only did the intro and ending riffs back in 82 when randy was alive and then the band would come out and go straight into over the mountain they never performed this song live until back in 2000

  • @strider4u Randy Rhoads died March 20 1982.today would have been his 56th Birthday Dec. 6th 1956

  • @strider4u he certainly did not play it in 1983 because unfortunetly the greatest guitarist on earth passed away in 1982

  • @strider4u randy was dead in 1983

  • @YourNameHere136 wrong,he was dead in march 19,1982

  • @thedarthvitor

    and he's truly missed... ;(

  • @Ozzmaster2112 totaly agree,R.I.P Randy Rhoads

  • @thedarthvitor

    Yeah...

  • @strider4u

The intercom played the intro to the song as the concert introduction during the diary tour but they didn't actually play the song live.

  • @strider4u Rhoads died in 82.

  • @GTCooper223: for those of us who play and practiced in order to get good, his playing is insulting. He's a "brand", an image, a totem! Don't get me wrong- his playing is adequate, (just can't stand the CONSTANT squals) but I can see that at any corner club in anytown, anywhere. It's just those guys don't make millions doing it! A player to aspire to? I think not!!!

  • man i could do without the fucking keyboards

  • so nice !

  • Ozzy did a great job on this song for his age he still has his voice unlike some other that have gotten old in rock....Such as Robert plant...

  • Damn! The Ozzy crew ought to release these kind of rare gems on CD/DVD. I hate it when an artist performs a rare song once or twice from whatever album, and NEVER plays that again. And most of all: NEVER releases it in a format of any kind. But I guess then bootlegging might die...;)

  • @thegame890 the worse thing is that when you know that he played a rare song only once and there's no bootleg and no official release.....that's sucks! :(

like now: he played I Just Want You at the sturgis show first and only time after 1998! and there's nothing about that..... :'(

  • thank you, it's very rare!

    very good job, Zakk

  • Comment removed

  • man hes terrible here

  • Yeah, I thought it sounded too good to be Zak!

  • That's what I though. Well at least Zak didn't turn this into a pinch harmonic nightmare!

  • @vvidavici Which is why im glad he did this with joe holmes and not zakk

  • @ozzy554 so i guess zakk was touring with BLS at this time

  • @ozzy554 haha

  • @ozzy554 correct me if i`m wrong but randy died in 82 tour diary of a madman? isnt he?

  • @elchino2696 yes unfourtantly he did

  • @vvidavici That's what I can't stand about Zacks' playing!

  • @vvidavici like crazy train

  • @vvidavici lol yup

  • Wow! I never knew he did this live. I wonder if there are any recordings of Rhoads playing it live. If anyone knows please pass the info my way!!!

  • @vvidavici Sorry, as far as i know he never performed it live with randy

  • I've always loved Ozzy and this song, thanks for posting it... I don't care what people say about Ozzy, singing out of key or whatever... Ozzy was one of the best performers in the day... People get old and voices change but he's still Ozzy and he deserves respect for what he's done vocally and performance-wise... That's my opinion...

  • this was still when his singing sucked because he was stoned or drunk 24/7

  • The keyboard is so Sharon.

  • They used to play this with Jake Lee when they first started in 83,the whole song. There are bootlegs but havent been able to get them.

  • Now I Know Why Ozzy Doesn't Play It Much, He Can't Sing It In Key Or Tempo!!! He Should Stick To Paranoid!!!

  • @DylanBStringer91 he does a better job at the clarkston show which i posted

  • good shit man

  • something sounds...off

  • @kinjur its probally because its zakk playing, randy was only alive untill 1982, "ozzy554" states that the video was from a show in columbus in 2000

  • Randy is not there!

  • in my opinion one of the darkest pieces of ozzy osbourne.

    also my favorite song.

  • Joe Holmes does those annoying wide pinch harmonics too.Not as much as Zak.

  • Diary of a Madman , God is so fucking awesome is a masterpiece is magistral!!

  • @OzzyRockz666 i know god is awesome!

  • Dude, WTF!? don't say it's live if it isn't...Dumbass.

  • how is this not live?

  • @ozzy554 The "Audio" is live...YES

    Video...IS NOT.

  • i do have a live video one on my channel from the clarkston show

  • this is live cant you hear the audience? In the original recording you hear an acoustic guitar first and you can obviously hear its an electric in this.

  • @cacorkins Oh my gosh, you idiot! I KNOW THE AUDIO IS LIVE, BUT THE VIDEO ISN'T!!!!!! STFU!

  • if your just going to be a jerk then your blocked

  • AAA... Dumbass it is live

  • holy shit ! guitar = 0% compared to randy , he really did masterpiece in this song and nobody can play this song like him :|

  • guitar tone sounds mighty thin...could be the mix - definitely not a Les Paul...

  • @boseqc1 Joe probably played strats or something like that.

  • I'm pretty sure this is Joe Holmes. Joe did the Ozzfest tour in '00 while Zakk was doing BLS

  • WHY no video of rhandy.Help me

  • tis Joe!

  • I think this is Zakk as I agree with zacbhart that you can hear the undeniable Zakk pinch harmonics (listen at :50).

Zakk was pretty restrained at the time of this recording so i can understand the debate. Nowadays, Zak hits those pinch harmonics FREQUENTLY. But I love him..

  • ive posted a video of this song from the clarkston show and there you can see that joe holmes played guitar for this tour

  • Oh ok. Thx for the correction. Sounds like Joe Holmes did the little Zakk pinch harmonic thing..

  • Ozzy sounds great. I wish i could have heard this with Randy.

  • i think zakk would have stuck closer to the original solo, so i'm sure this is joe holmes

  • This was Randy Rhoads playing guitar, why would anybody think otherwise?

  • Lets see, maybe because Randy Rhoads died in 1982 and this is in 2000. Also you can tell its Zakk by the pinch harmonics he does in the beginning.

  • zakk diddn't return to ozzy's band until 2001. this is joe holmes

  • no way. nobody can squeal like zakk. its unmistakeable

  • Joe Holmes also had that sqeal down...I think this is Joe

  • This is most definitely Joe Holmes. Although Joe is a great live player, those damn strat style guitars he plays sound so thin compared to a Les Paul.

    Zakk's sound is much thicker.

  • Also, Randy said that they don't do this song live.

  • Yup- Randy never played this song live and thats a fact.. Years ago when I collected Randy 'boots' it was difficult weeding thru all the fake bootlegs labeled Randy but after you obssess on Randys playing for 20+ years you can pick him out in a heartbeat. Hes just that much better then the rest : 0

  • @popgoiuuod Why didn't Randy ever play this live???

  • Can't imagine why, It's a masterpiece!

  • Comment removed

  • This isnt zakk playing guitar, its Joe Holmes

  • Holy fuck Randy was an amazing songwriter, and musician, I love guitarists, and there's a fuckload of graet players out there, famous and not famous,

but I can honestly say Rhoads was mindblowingly good

  • does not matter i want a refund to my past ozzfest shows this song should of been in the packages its awsome anyway

  • I can't believe Ozzy held this pose with his hands up for the entire duration of this song, WOW! No blinking either, how does he do that? He is truly the knight of darkness!!!

  • or moving his mouth!!!! how ya doin that ozzy?! how ya doin that?!

  • prince not a knight

  • PRINCE of darkness, not Knight of darkness

  • prince of darkness

  • haha :D

  • Comment removed

  • @SHEEPSTER1000 I thought it was Prince?

  • @SHEEPSTER1000 This is the greatest comment ever.

  • @SHEEPSTER1000 prince of darkness lol not knight of darkness

  • it wasn not ozzy messsing up it was the band this song is not suppose to be play this fast

  • sounds fine to me

  • this sounds like joe holmes doing zack covering randy and i wish people would stop trying to recreate masterpieces they cant duplicate(or even come close).i have only heard 1 person play this right and he is one of my friends no one ever heard of

  • I wish Joe Holmes had done more recordings with Ozzy. I think he did one song. I heard he studied with Randy Rhoads at some point.

  • that's a lie

  • ozzy messed up at 1:05 :( i kinda feel bad

  • He didn't mess up. He deliberately sang the line earlier. You can tell b/c it is still in time.

  • idk man to me it kind of sounds like a mistake

  • I have a bootleg cd of Camden NJ in 2000 and yes this is Joe Holmes. The band jam during Suicide Solution confirms this when Ozzy introduces the lineup. Joe does a good job on both versions of this that I heard. But if you want a real treat, there are mp3s of Randy actually teaching this song almost note for note back in early 82. It makes you wish that they would have played it live atleast once during the Diary tour.

  • where can i get that mp3?

  • yeahhh dude

  • The last song of the last album of Randy, beauty end for this great album.

But this live is a Bullshit

    Long live Ozzy

  • joe holmes did a good job on this one...

  • you're wrong man..... this is zakk wylde not joe holmes....

  • Actually Im fairly certain its Joe, Zakk didnt play again with Ozzy until after the Down to Earth album was released, in 2001

  • My own personal opinion is that, I think all of you out there should stop criticizing every guitar player Ozzy has ever had and stop trying to compare them with Randy! All of Ozzy's guitar players have there own unique style. Yes, nobody will ever be able to replace Randy but I think that each and every one of Ozzy's guitar players have done their best to complement and replicate or improvise in their own style Randy's music, which I'm sure Randy would be proud of each and every one of them.

  • whatever happened to joe holmes anywayz? I really liked him with ozzy. he played good and, I liked his touch. this song for example when I seen it live was awesome. ill never forget it.

  • He found Jesus. Seriously.

  • This is one of my faves from the Randy era! A bit of trivia: I read somewhere that Ozzy had wanted Randy to play a guitar part similar to Carl Orff's Carmina Burauna.

  • ozz fest 2000 at the blossom music center in cleveland...... when I heard him play this.... my jaw dropped! I never thought I would hear this song live, then here I was witnessing it! this song was awesome live!

  • me too...thought the same thing

  • its joe holmes on guitar... not zakk... guarenteed

  • The end of an era! The Last song on Diary is Diary and it is the last piece of Randy we have. I know there are soundboard recordings of them and pretty much all video is out....or is it? Let's see and here more from the ones holding out material.

  • live does not mean a still picture

  • HAHAHAHA

    I totaly agree man

  • where can this anthem be found live?

I consider 'Diary of a Madman' the GREATEST metal song of all time.

    Because, it is.

  • he played it first time in 2000! only at 5 show!

these 5 are the only live performances of this song!!! he never sang it before and he never will sing it again! :(

  • well k i did not kno that

  • no its joe holmes. he was ozzys guitarist 1995 til 2001

  • its joe holmes

  • very cool...also wanted to hear this one live

  • There's nothing wrong with pinch harmonics. The problem with Zakk is, he uses them to the point where it doesn't even add that extra kick it's supposed to add. Randy used them tastefully. If Zakk would hold back and use them sparingly, his playing would sound so much better.

  • This kicks so much ass! Randy Rhoads would be proud! R.I.P. Randy we all miss you

  • Just a foot note this isn't Zakk Wylde it is Joe Holmes playing. Joe was an actual Randy Rhoads student. He played both like Randy and Zakk.

  • Zakk's a good player I just can't get into his style, with those squeal constantly.

  • was this ever performed with good old randy?

  • To my knowledge there is a rumor that randy & ozzy played the song early on the madman tour, but the crowd didn't like it so they never did played it again. The crowd didn't like it because there were no violins.

  • zakk rules

  • thats not zakk wylde it's joe holmes..mister "i dont like pinch harmonics"...

  • Could not have said it better myself!

  • yea i saw him play with ozzy last year and all of randys songs he fucked up

  • I agree...whoever it was. Pinch harmonics are obnoxious and indicative of a tiny penis of those you use and abuse them.

  • dude

    randy used pinch harmonics

  • He didn't abuse them or use them tastelessly. In fact, I can't even recall a song where he does them.

  • not to mention DIARY OF A MADMAN, Randy used PHs in that song

Theres nothing wrong with them unless you're Zakk Wylde and use them every other note.

  • go listen to his tribute album

he uses them in iron man

    children of the grave

    crazy train

    i dont know

    ect.

  • its not zakk dumbass

  • Personally if I was Ozzy, I wouldn't play this song live either, because then Zakk Wylde would have to get his filthy pinch harmonic-y hands all over it. I don't have anything against people making a song thier style to some extent, but putting a pinch harmonic in like every 10 seconds ruins the song.

  • Always wanted to hear this song live!

I saw Ozzy at Roseland in NYC with Joe Holmes on guitar after his "retirement" (1995/6) Joe was awesome I wished that they had played Diary at that show.

  • Ozzy's 2000 lineup was; Joe Holmes on guitar, Robert Trujillo on bass, Brian TIchy on drums, and they were stoked to be opening the show with this amazing song! They also pushed to open with "Over The Mountain" but the vocal is in a pretty high register for Oz! I think Holmes does an awesome job covering the styles of Iommi, Rhoads, Lee and Wylde. C'mon, that's 30 years of mightiness to rise up to! The guy lives for guitar. Not everyone can be the next innovator. But respect him for dedication!

  • agreed. I wish holems stuck around longer.
