I agree with rockslovers, and I sure wish I had discovered ozzy a little sooner so I could have seen the old blizzard of ozz with Randy. Ozzy- pay Lee and Bob!!!!!
@mikeawilson55 no it was joe holmes. joe played with ozzy 1995-1998 and once again on the ozzfest 2000 tour. Zakk was busy with other projects at the time
Ozzy did not do DOAM live with Randy. Exception.. The Instrumental version of the song was played when the show would begin, it would play as the group came out on stage, nothing more...
I agree with whoever said they were happy not to have to listen to Zakk's squeal fest. God, if Ozzy only knew that he would sell WAY more albums if he went back to basic production and GOOD players without all the gloss and stuff. I wish he'd play more classics. My dream set list would include Diary, O.T.Mountain, W.F.Darkness, R&R Rebel, K.O.Giants, The U.Sin, K.O.Giant's, P.Mason, No Easy Way Out, 11 Silver, D.M.Down, etc. The rare yet GEMs!!! Yays? Neighs?
@ozzy554 I know, one of my favorites of all time, I just wish he played it here in MA when he came through. I was shocked to find out that he'd been playing it at other venues. I did, however get to see him play Fire in the Sky, which was unexpected and cool!
You included Killer of Giants twice haha. He played that one on this last tour, it was really cool hearing him play that one live last year. I love the setlist you chose but unfortunately many of those songs Ozzy is no longer capable of singing :/
Never understood why he never did this or You Can't Kill Rock And Roll(Probably my favorite) in earlier tours. I'll never forget during either the Diary or Bark at the moon tour, after a particular song, he would shout out "You can't kill rock and roll!" I was so sure he'd do that song, only to get screwed!
Has Ozzy ever written his own lyrics? I find it hard to believe that he did....I know Butler did most of it in Sabbath....but what about the solo career?
They didn't play this live because Ozzy couldn't keep in time with those odd time signatures this song uses. He said something "I'm not a fucking Frank Zappa"
@DiamondDEK The only theory was with Ozzy at the height of his substance abuse back then he couldn't master the time changes and other elements of Diary live so they scrapped it during rehersals of the first couple of shows. Pity, this would have been Randy's live masterpiece.
@strider4u no they only did the intro and ending riffs back in 82 when randy was alive and then the band would come out and go straight into over the mountain they never performed this song live until back in 2000
@GTCooper223: for those of us who play and practiced in order to get good, his playing is insulting. He's a "brand", an image, a totem! Don't get me wrong- his playing is adequate, (just can't stand the CONSTANT squals) but I can see that at any corner club in anytown, anywhere. It's just those guys don't make millions doing it! A player to aspire to? I think not!!!
Damn! The Ozzy crew ought to release these kind of rare gems on CD/DVD. I hate it when an artist performs a rare song once or twice from whatever album, and NEVER plays that again. And most of all: NEVER releases it in a format of any kind. But I guess then bootlegging might die...;)
@thegame890 the worse thing is that when you know that he played a rare song only once and there's no bootleg and no official release.....that's sucks! :(
like now: he played I Just Want You at the sturgis show first and only time after 1998! and there's nothing about that..... :'(
I've always loved Ozzy and this song, thanks for posting it... I don't care what people say about Ozzy, singing out of key or whatever... Ozzy was one of the best performers in the day... People get old and voices change but he's still Ozzy and he deserves respect for what he's done vocally and performance-wise... That's my opinion...
this is live cant you hear the audience? In the original recording you hear an acoustic guitar first and you can obviously hear its an electric in this.

Zakk was pretty restrained at the time of this recording so i can understand the debate. Nowadays, Zak hits those pinch harmonics FREQUENTLY. But I love him..
This is most definitely Joe Holmes. Although Joe is a great live player, those damn strat style guitars he plays sound so thin compared to a Les Paul.
Yup- Randy never played this song live and thats a fact.. Years ago when I collected Randy 'boots' it was difficult weeding thru all the fake bootlegs labeled Randy but after you obssess on Randys playing for 20+ years you can pick him out in a heartbeat. Hes just that much better then the rest : 0
I can't believe Ozzy held this pose with his hands up for the entire duration of this song, WOW! No blinking either, how does he do that? He is truly the knight of darkness!!!
this sounds like joe holmes doing zack covering randy and i wish people would stop trying to recreate masterpieces they cant duplicate(or even come close).i have only heard 1 person play this right and he is one of my friends no one ever heard of
I have a bootleg cd of Camden NJ in 2000 and yes this is Joe Holmes. The band jam during Suicide Solution confirms this when Ozzy introduces the lineup. Joe does a good job on both versions of this that I heard. But if you want a real treat, there are mp3s of Randy actually teaching this song almost note for note back in early 82. It makes you wish that they would have played it live atleast once during the Diary tour.
My own personal opinion is that, I think all of you out there should stop criticizing every guitar player Ozzy has ever had and stop trying to compare them with Randy! All of Ozzy's guitar players have there own unique style. Yes, nobody will ever be able to replace Randy but I think that each and every one of Ozzy's guitar players have done their best to complement and replicate or improvise in their own style Randy's music, which I'm sure Randy would be proud of each and every one of them.
whatever happened to joe holmes anywayz? I really liked him with ozzy. he played good and, I liked his touch. this song for example when I seen it live was awesome. ill never forget it.
This is one of my faves from the Randy era! A bit of trivia: I read somewhere that Ozzy had wanted Randy to play a guitar part similar to Carl Orff's Carmina Burauna.
ozz fest 2000 at the blossom music center in cleveland...... when I heard him play this.... my jaw dropped! I never thought I would hear this song live, then here I was witnessing it! this song was awesome live!
The end of an era! The Last song on Diary is Diary and it is the last piece of Randy we have. I know there are soundboard recordings of them and pretty much all video is out....or is it? Let's see and here more from the ones holding out material.
There's nothing wrong with pinch harmonics. The problem with Zakk is, he uses them to the point where it doesn't even add that extra kick it's supposed to add. Randy used them tastefully. If Zakk would hold back and use them sparingly, his playing would sound so much better.
To my knowledge there is a rumor that randy & ozzy played the song early on the madman tour, but the crowd didn't like it so they never did played it again. The crowd didn't like it because there were no violins.
Personally if I was Ozzy, I wouldn't play this song live either, because then Zakk Wylde would have to get his filthy pinch harmonic-y hands all over it. I don't have anything against people making a song thier style to some extent, but putting a pinch harmonic in like every 10 seconds ruins the song.
I saw Ozzy at Roseland in NYC with Joe Holmes on guitar after his "retirement" (1995/6) Joe was awesome I wished that they had played Diary at that show.
Ozzy's 2000 lineup was; Joe Holmes on guitar, Robert Trujillo on bass, Brian TIchy on drums, and they were stoked to be opening the show with this amazing song! They also pushed to open with "Over The Mountain" but the vocal is in a pretty high register for Oz! I think Holmes does an awesome job covering the styles of Iommi, Rhoads, Lee and Wylde. C'mon, that's 30 years of mightiness to rise up to! The guy lives for guitar. Not everyone can be the next innovator. But respect him for dedication!
Is there a better song? Who am I kiddin this song should be the theme song for the Neo Classical genre and Good music genre :) R.I.P. Randy

There's nothing wrong with pinch harmonics. The problem with Zakk is, he uses them to the point where it doesn't even add that extra kick it's supposed to add. Randy used them tastefully. If Zakk would hold back and use them sparingly, his playing would sound so much better.

This kicks so much ass! Randy Rhoads would be proud! R.I.P. Randy we all miss you

Just a foot note this isn't Zakk Wylde it is Joe Holmes playing. Joe was an actual Randy Rhoads student. He played both like Randy and Zakk.

Zakk's a good player I just can't get into his style, with those squeal constantly.

was this ever performed with good old randy?

To my knowledge there is a rumor that randy & ozzy played the song early on the madman tour, but the crowd didn't like it so they never did played it again. The crowd didn't like it because there were no violins.

I could only listen to about half of this song. Zakk Wylde's stupid pinch harmonics ruins it.

I agree...whoever it was. Pinch harmonics are obnoxious and indicative of a tiny penis of those you use and abuse them.
janderson2000 3 years ago
dude
randy used pinch harmonics
corsalemusic 3 years ago
He didn't abuse them or use them tastelessly. In fact, I can't even recall a song where he does them.
janderson2000 3 years ago
not to mention DIARY OF A MADMAN, Randy used PHs in that song
Theres nothing wrong with them unless you're Zakk Wylde and use them every other note.

Always wanted to hear this song live!
