Fine track by The Motors, which was a fairly sizeable hit in the UK back in 1978. It was also Simon Bates's 'Record Of The Week' at one point in that year, if my memory serves me correctly. ('Batesy' was the presenter of the 9:00 am - 11:30 am morning show on National Radio One, at that time.)
At 0:57 Andy McMaster gets really pissed at the guy in the Wehrmacht uniform's hysterical laughter. Andy looks over his shoulder in disgust. "Hey guys we are on TOTP, take it seriously, for God' sake!"
@GamesFrontiers Luftwaffe actually but yes why? Had the wardrobe department run out of airline uniforms that day? You'll notice towards the end that he is even wearing a holster!
See people were not afraid to see the ridiculous sides of things back then and have a laugh like Miming on TOTP for one and wearing silly outfits on stage ,not like now so so serious.
Back then, TOTP policy was that the vocals were live but the music had to be re-recorded onto a specific-for-the-show backing track and then mimed to. Hence the reason so many TOTP performances had band members dressing up, pissing about, John Peel on ukelele etc. etc.
@custardaghost .. We meet again, Bands like Sex Pistols, U2 and many more REFUSED to go on TOTP.. The terminolgy re recored is mythogy.. The correct phrase is doubled tracked vocals. This still happens to this day incase there's a technical hitch during a live show/concert.. Do you get up in the morning and eat a bowl of, how to slaver absolute pish,, custardpie.
uglynailsrock. comments like yours are the reason I sit in on saturtday nights listening to old music on my laptop like billy no mates! (I would never have noticed but I pissed myself anyway!)
what a classic from summer of 1978, wish they wud reform and tour. class song from my youth always rember this and -run for home by lindisfarne and goldie making up again. 3 classics from summer 78. why is there no great songs on radio anymore. god help the kids of tday who have crap thrown at them on radio and tv
This song is an absolute classic! The trouble with the Motors was they had no idea whatsoever. Look at the guys mucking about like its a "carry on film".
Their album covers were horrendous. They could have and should have been massive but they made a mess of it big time.
No disrespect to Andy McMaster the keyboard & bass player. But Brahms Tchaikovsky on guitar was a clown.
Well thats wrong to be honest. Singles these days sell more than they ever did.
If you dont believe me google it.
2010 saw the higest total singles sales in the uk ever.
However, this isn't because of the quality of the music, its because downloads are so cheap compared to the physicals of years gone by. Album sales though have suffred a lot, they are now at thier lowest ever in total, (except for Adele, who ironically, has the higest sales ever in the time period).
@metafis Yes I was being slightly ironic there. Single sales were higher in the 70s than in the 80s, 90s and 00s and that's a fact. Downloads are different though and I take your point.
Those guys are so funny, the guitarist and bass player look like TWA captains, the lead singer is dressed like he's doin' time, and the drummer is goin' podracing on tatooine.
Nick Garvey gets credit for being the "lead "vocalist of the band. Who is the singer here? I am not sure.
Bram left the band because he was on salary and not really considered by the band as a real member.I got my info from Wiki and I know sometimes that is not a very reliable source.
I was 13 years old when this song came out in 1978, it's a great song. @ Uglynailsrock. What a stupid comment to make on a music video, your comment is not even remotely funny. Grow up.
funny thing about this its old and corny yet still good check out the guitarist with SS uniform on im sure it would make the news today from whining pussies in 2010
@uglynailsrock no that's you sweetie, but I will say how I love that they are having such fun, especially the two guys at the back playing on their twangers. It was so great when you didn't have to be so contrived, you could just take the piss on stage. Or even have one. We were so free then, and now music has strangled itself with a fucking autotuner.
Blimey, what typing! The story behind this is that the band had a feud going with TOTP Producer Robin Nash who insisted they wear "costumes" from BBC wardrobe not normal clothes. Andy refused and almost got them thrown off the show (the record was at #2 or #4, which chart?). Nash then had issue with Bram's Luftwaffe uniform. Cue band hilarity and Nash cutting the song in half! Also they were yelling "Haircut" in the chorus - note the dirty look from Andy.

Can still remember when this was in the charts, red hot summer. Mum & dad away on holiday, house to myself, met the wife & after all this time still together. Thanks for this bring back great memories. p.s great video collection.
nyrainbow4, I finally have to stop going through your videos and say thanks. your archive is an absolute treasure chest. this is what makes youtube great. thanks so much for taking the time to put all of these great videos online.
