I heard that pure breed dogs like the Malamute are becoming extinct because people are getting these designer dogs(mutts) like Ladradooles etc. I heard that Malamutes and some other pure breed dog is becoming extinct. So if you like pure breed dogs get the word out so we can tray to save them.
Nice video, i love these dogs... Do you think texas would be an ok enviorment with the heat? If not, could you list more dogs like this who can be in texas heat.. Thanks
If they get growly or snappy you can't back off from them. You need to grab them by the top of the muzzle and tell them very firmly "No". Wolves bite each other on the muzzle to show dominance so you will be showing them you are in charge.
I have a malamute who is almost 6. They have to be very carefully trained and socialized around people and animals. You need to handle their paws A LOT. This gets them used to being touched by humans. They won't like it at first but you have to do it.
You also need to food train them by holding their bowl while they eat, moving it away for a few seconds, and giving it right back. It trains them to know you control the food and that you will never let them go hungry. It also stops bowl aggressi
@MrSystemShocker these dogs, are one of the most imperessive dogs in history (i think so). They are cute, nice and they love to be out and run and play.
@FlowzTheRhythm we live in Georgia right now and we have 2 Malamutes.. they do ok in the summer.. and our breeder is in Texas.. They def prefer the cooler weather but Kodi (my oldest) just lived inside all summer and was happy about it. Our other Mal is only 20wks old so i haven't seen him in the heat too much but really you can get one in Utah they adjust :)
@16Jevk Haha thanks:) Is your breeder local, im actually interested in driving down there and bringing one into my home. You might wanna inbox me the personal info for safety lol. But thanks, im so happy. i mean thats just great news for me to hear.
mirnaknin,With a mal u have the closest thing to a wolf you can get. Our mal does not like excess affection, if someone trys to pat him on top of his head he growls and shows teeth. scratching under the chin is ok. It takes time for a mal to bond with you (unlike a golden). They are very responsive to posture/body language. Usually i hug/scratch my mal first thing in morning but after that no way. Our first few months were very frustraing and we nearly gave him up. perserve. it is worth it.
@ookalik42 thanks for the advice! turns out that she doesnt like her chest being touched, after a few times of touching her chest, it wasn't growling anymore it was panic, maybe she was the runt of the litter, & the other puppies pushed her around, when she came to us she had a small wound on her back, and 2 others that were healing. she is a lot better now, she only growls if she finds a bone outside and we try to take it away, during feeding time she doesnt growl at all
Mirnaknin. Our male mal is 1.5 yrs now. What a journey so far. Here is my advice to you. Be pack leader from start. Do not yell or hit. We have found ignoring/removing your presence to be effective with jumping/mouthing. Do not use a prong collar if aggression increases when wearing. We use 2 collars and leads. one choker for backup and a gentle leader head harness for correction. Be prepared for dog/dog aggression. Most dogs do not know how to approach a dominant dog, which a mal usually is.
@ookalik42 thanks for the reply! i have not yelled at her, i try to talk to her in a stern voice. she seems to be a calm submissive dog, but the other day, i hugged her and she growled and showed teeth. i tried hugging her again and again and giving treats, and nothing, she only does this sometimes, and i tried to grab her collar, and she growled and turned her head towards me, like she was trying to snap at me. i dont understand what im doing wrong!
When I first saw this dog in person I remember thinking "there is no way this is a Siberian Husky," but nearly everyone I know thought that. I cheated a little though, I got to pet the dog and he was rock solid, I mean real muscular, he was no "fat looking siberian husky." I just remember those bones, the dog is just POWER.
@poppyaje A Malamute can be owned in any weather, but if you do intend on getting one you just have take precautions. In hot climate Malamutes should be indoor dogs, and when you exercise them make sure its only early in the morning or at night, and keeping water at hand. I know people in Texas who own Malamutes, and they're doing just fine :)
@poppyaje I have one that is turning 2 in march and OMG when she was a puppy she would scratch at the carpet cleaner if she went in the house and she is such a NUT! you would love one!
I must point this out because I heard the narrator say siberian huskies have blue eyes and malamutes have brown, while this is true, huskies also have brown eyes and bi colored eyes not just blue
I previously had a Siberian Husky as my pet, and she was the best dog I could ever ask for. Very affectionate, cute and cuddly. I'd imagine the Alaskan Malamute is similar to them and I would like to get an Alaskan Malamute within the next 2-3 years. :)
guys i got a malamute puppy but he chases my cat aha but im worried that he might be very agressive towards other dogs that means i cant realy take him out for walks around parks can any one help me out and reply thanks ;)
@XxMalamutexX we have two Malamutes and 2 cats.. our malamutes chase those cats like no ones business and the cats taunt them back. But BOTH dogs get along with every dog they meet unless the other dog is aggressive. My suggestion is to take the dog everywhere with you to meet as many people and other dogs as possible. Both our dogs I sent to day care so they could play all day in a large pack of dogs. I've never had a problem with either one.
@XxMalamutexX aw :( They are fairly new here in the States, but work wonders w/ socialization. you should open one in England! Make a boat load of money! haha day care here is $20 for the day and they do boarding and have other services like grooming & training. The place here we take our dogs they don't even crate at night. the dogs get a room sometimes shared w/ a couch & water etc if more than 1 dog is to a room then someone stays the night at the facility. it's really great.
my female great with people and fine with other dogs but if another dog snaps at her she goes for the kill it's pretty scary how fast she can take down another dog.
@wanN1337 My parents want me to become successful at my business and make a ton of money, before they'll let me get one. By then, I'll be too old to actually have fun and take care of one. =(
I met one of these dogs at an agricultural show recently and he was very freindly and sociable. I was amazed that he was up to my Waist in when on all fours and I'm 5' 8" and he went up on his hind legs and was 3 inches taller it was the ccoolest dog i had ever seen
@snowboardskater1102 the breed is acctually preety smart, your friends dog probally bite one of them first as chuahaha are always known to be a snappy violent breed
@NYmikeFL I have an Alaskan Malamute, and she's sooooo lovely with my cat! just gotta love how animal planet still says "Indians" when referring to Native Americans. It's like calling an American a "Brit" just because they are white skinned. Or calling a Jew a Muslim, just because they are both from the Middle East. I'll get off my soap box now.
I love all types of dogs, but I *ABSOLUTELY* love these dogs and I really do want one, but the thing is is that I reside in Houston, Texas which is notorious for its unbearable heat during the summer and I have heard that these types of dogs require a lot of excercise, not to mention shed heavily.
Also, what is the difference between a regular Malamute and a Giant Malamute?
Alaskan Malamutes are generally bigger and stockier than Huskies, and malamutes cannot have blue eyes. At all. Their eyes are more squinted and they are generally calmer. Except my puppy, he has too much. xD
I've had a husky and many malamutes. Mals are definitely not as high-strung as their little cousin huskies. Google "Howl At The Moon Malamutes" to see the many sizes, coat types and colors.
I'd love to have one in the future, though I'm pretty sure it's breed with similar behaviour as Syberian Husky, ie. they really need some serious activities all day long and without proper attention they just break free like they smaller cousins (or just don't obey and do various stupid things like opening fridge and eating all the food inside). IMO it's a very good dog to have, but only if you're experienced owner.
Malamutes are a wonderful dog. I have a Samoyed and a mutt but perhaps oneday I'll own a malamute. They are a sweet dog, but you need to know how to control them, and you also have to be willing to have an animal that will have their own decision process.
Mine is 2 years old and is the friendliest dog in the world. Even though they're known for being so friendly though, he's so loyal that when he senses danger, he does come to my defense. We have had a break in, and he did not run up to him wagging his tail, He got in their face and did the meanest growl I've ever seen. The dog is so big the guy just turned around and ran out. They are acceptable guard dogs.
Same here, my girl protected my father when a pit bull tried to attack him in our yard. The other dog didn't stand a chance but they are both well now.
Most definitely. My mal, Glacier, just locked teeth until my dad called her, but the pit tried to attack her again and she put it to the floor to make sure it wouldn't hurt him. Also, Glacier has this thing were she has to check on anybody and if anybody is gone, she whines and has to be calmed down. She's 13 years old now and my baby. <3
@immahotpepper yeah thats quite impressive, why not train malamutes as fighters then... of course im not condoning dog fights but, hey, makes you wonder...
This is my favorite breed. many breed are like him, for example, Siberian Husky, Alaskan Klee Kai, Alaskan Husky, canadian Eskimo Dog, Miniature Siberian Husky, ...
@TheAmazingamerica LOL, so this is what you're reduced to now? A Nazi consigned to irrelevance, and has nothing better to say than "my dog can beat up your dog." Very sad. Then why I am I laughing??
@beerbrain420 LOL, anyway, she might not be able to get her mouth around all that hair. Malamutes have huge necks. I'm stalking u on my breaks, I'm busy making dirt/compost, I got out of shape this winter.
@TheAmazingamerica I have no doubt your dog would take out my Sam, he is a very gentle fellow and doesn't have it in for anyone or anything. But your pooch would have a far greater problem with my previous Mal, a female that could tear large raccoons apart in seconds. But it's not a conversation I like to have, because I love all dogs, and would no doubt love even yours. Enjoy your stalking, you must be very bored.

I have one. He is 12 years old and kinf of a independent dog, needs only company, running and food. He is not a watchdog but commands respect because it is big dog. U need to be patient to make him obey. I like him so much he is very kind and friendly. He was ill only once during 12 years. I hope he will live next 5 years
can u have a alaskan malamute in a not to hot but not to cold weather but hot summers if u keep grooming them and not let the fur get to heavy or would still be uncomfortable for them
I had one, he did not like the heat of summer and they shed a lot, very sociable too, not much on barking, just howls and not a very good watch/guard dog because they are so friendly, a burglar could break into your house and they would be wagging there tails to get a petting! All in all they are the best dog breed (to me) around! BTW, mine died from cancer @ 6 years old, I miss him so much!
@marnisarah A Dog is what you make it, be it a guard Dog, companion etc, Dogs aren't born a certain way, it's how they're moulded throughout life, just like humans.
@marnisarah that is really interesting! i had a malamute mix as well. she died of cancer at 14. she was EXACTLY as you explained. very sociable, never barked until late age, super friendly. mine was mixed with german shepard, though, so she didn't have the really thick coat.

I would love one of these, in Lexington Kentucky we have very cold weathers but we have very humid/hot summers - so it's impossible to have one in the heat of summer here. What beautiful dogs.
i actually thought i had a mix husky, but after watching this and lookin at info and comparing it to my dog she is more of a mix malamute :) either way i still love her <3
@getchaNerdOn short haired labs. No serious grooming, generally healthy dogs, very loving and great around kids. The only problem is you need an actual yard and they love to run around. Other than that though there perfect.

I have a Malamute Puppy video on my channel =D
uwbull84 8 months ago
I love all types of dogs, but I *ABSOLUTELY* love these dogs and I really do want one, but the thing is is that I reside in Houston, Texas which is notorious for its unbearable heat during the summer and I have heard that these types of dogs require a lot of excercise, not to mention shed heavily.
Also, what is the difference between a regular Malamute and a Giant Malamute?

@njgamer19

I have a Malamute Alaskan!!!! It is 5 months old and it is wonderful!!! Its such a great dog, and very sociable!! n_n
turtwig1232 9 months ago
I'd love to have one in the future, though I'm pretty sure it's breed with similar behaviour as Syberian Husky, ie. they really need some serious activities all day long and without proper attention they just break free like they smaller cousins (or just don't obey and do various stupid things like opening fridge and eating all the food inside). IMO it's a very good dog to have, but only if you're experienced owner.

If I ever move to Alaska, the first things I'm going to get are a Casull .454 and a malamute.

Oh my god, did that guy just totally jack the sled from the kid in the last few seconds of the video? That was awesome! XD

Malamutes are a wonderful dog. I have a Samoyed and a mutt but perhaps oneday I'll own a malamute. They are a sweet dog, but you need to know how to control them, and you also have to be willing to have an animal that will have their own decision process.
fuzzywzhe 9 months ago
Mine is 2 years old and is the friendliest dog in the world. Even though they're known for being so friendly though, he's so loyal that when he senses danger, he does come to my defense. We have had a break in, and he did not run up to him wagging his tail, He got in their face and did the meanest growl I've ever seen. The dog is so big the guy just turned around and ran out. They are acceptable guard dogs.

Same here, my girl protected my father when a pit bull tried to attack him in our yard. The other dog didn't stand a chance but they are both well now.
MagicAavelyn 8 months ago
@MagicAavelyn Wow! Really? So it totally beat off the pitbull?
immahotpepper 8 months ago
@immahotpepper
MagicAavelyn 8 months ago
@immahotpepper yeah thats quite impressive, why not train malamutes as fighters then... of course im not condoning dog fights but, hey, makes you wonder...

@TheAmazingamerica LOL, so this is what you're reduced to now? A Nazi consigned to irrelevance, and has nothing better to say than "my dog can beat up your dog." Very sad. Then why I am I laughing??
beerbrain420 10 months ago

@marnisarah Sounds good, but sad that it died.;(
We are thinking to buy one, have always love alaskan malamute/huskies.

@marnisarah A Dog is what you make it, be it a guard Dog, companion etc, Dogs aren't born a certain way, it's how they're moulded throughout life, just like humans.
2BarKawi 10 months ago
@marnisarah that is really interesting! i had a malamute mix as well. she died of cancer at 14. she was EXACTLY as you explained. very sociable, never barked until late age, super friendly. mine was mixed with german shepard, though, so she didn't have the really thick coat.

@marnisarah i'm so sorry. i know how it is to lose a dog. it's been about 5 months ago and i still think about him every day

I would love one of these, in Lexington Kentucky we have very cold weathers but we have very humid/hot summers - so it's impossible to have one in the heat of summer here. What beautiful dogs.

I have been watching a couple of these videos. Does anybody know a dog breed that's good for beginners?
getchaNerdOn 1 year ago
@getchaNerdOn ya you should get ekunova medium breed !
PinkFloyder18 1 year ago
@getchaNerdOn probably a Labrador or golden retriever (if you want a larger breed)
itsarianit 11 months ago
@getchaNerdOn short haired labs. No serious grooming, generally healthy dogs, very loving and great around kids. The only problem is you need an actual yard and they love to run around. Other than that though there perfect.
