All respect to the original Space Battleship "Yamato," but there are occasional dialogue moments that are more entertaining in the English translation in "Star Blazers." In the English version Desslar (Desslock) said, "I can't stand a man who laughs at his own jokes." Much funnier in my opinion than "Gamilus doesn't need such a vulgar man." Desslock had more an air of sarcasm that I found more entertaining in "Star Blazers."
How can people say that Desslock's voice sounds better than Desler's? At least Desler sounds noble, and not like someone going through puberty. Much more mature.
I thought that maybe the Gamillians looked white at first, to confuse Earthlings into thinking they're just like us. Or I thought that the Gamillians at the Pluto base were actually Humans who joined the Gamillians so they would be spared.
Somebody once made a fan video (I don't remember who) using one of the Yamato's flying sequences. The ship was flying away from the watcher's POV, with accurate SFX and all, then two voices did a Q&A. They sounded like the English voices for Kodai and Shima (or tried to, anyway): "Can't this bucket possibly go any faster?" "Not unless you want to get out and push!" Maybe somebody here might remember something, hmm?
Doesn't it take lost and lots and lots of mines to surround a solar system in a three-dimensional space? It would be kinda lucky for the aliens of the Yamato flew into a simple ring of mines.
they wouldn't need much air in the decoy since in the vacuum of space it would be fully inflated with just a wee bit of air.... it should have still looked mostly deflated as they were shoving it out the launch bay
@Zaku41k The Desslok Banana Peel was still in the prototyping stage at this point, but when it finally went to production, the laughs never stopped at those senior officers briefings
@ronito6 What's REALLY odd is that when you watch enough space opera anime, you'll note that the Japanese vacillate between loving and hating Nazi-esque empires. Some artists also hate the idea of a world government, and thus show the ugly side of it, while others happily embrace UN Spacy ^-^
Basically, they get to do whatever they want with their stories whereas here every project is combed for political correctness. Creative license for the win!
I noticed the transition of Gamilius skin from flesh-tone to blue the first time I saw the show and I figured it had something to do with the added animations built around the original movie (which I never got to see).

The space minefield reminds me of the Battelestar Galactica fleeing from the Cylon Tyranny.

What is up with the noisy HVAC in Gamilon bases?? Such a depressing lament. It's enough to give anyone the blues.

Reiji Matsumoto changed the skin color to avoid having the series labeled racist or too anti-western.
Matsumoto says
"The fact of their skin color may have caused misunderstandings..." (Notes: Farewell to Yamato Laserdisc (May 1998)
It was just time in the story to add a bit more alien-ness to the Gamillas
Thus the very gradual change
of Dessler's color in this scene.
No production mistake here.
Matsumoto was just taking advantage
of post war xenophobia
to hook the audience.

well could be cyanosis, but maybe there was a plague and they all started taking silver based antibiotics that makes ppl's skin blue :O

Yes...the 10 sec transformation in real time (2:50-3:00) is obvious. Dresler, effective as he may be, left the hospital too soon. xD

hmm it seems like gamilus people are running low on air (reason why i say this is because they are all blue!)
whatewer23 4 years ago 2
Hehehe... I like the blue skin better... It makes the Gamilons look more alien...
I bet it was some sort artistic design change mid-season... well done!!!
KronnangDunn 4 years ago 3
Actually the color of their skin was simply an animation error for the first ten eps (at least it wasn't as bad as Transformers G1).
